Wildland inventory and resource modeling for Douglas and Carson City Counties, Nevada, using LANDSAT and digital terrain data
The potential of using LANDSAT satellite imagery to map and inventory pinyon-juniper desert forest types in Douglas and Carson City Counties, Nevada was demonstrated. Specific map and statistical products produced include land cover, mechanical operations capability, big game winter range habitat, fire hazard, and forest harvestability. The Nevada Division of Forestry determined that LANDSAT can produce a reliable and low-cost resource data. Added benefits become apparent when the data are linked to a geographical information system (GIS) containing existing ownership, planning, elevation, slope, and aspect information
Skeletal Extension, Density and Calcification of the Reef Coral, Montastrea Annularis: St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands
Parameters of the annual and subannual skeletal growth of 61 Montastrea annularis corals, collected at a variety of shallow depth sites on reefs of St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands, are determined by X-radiography and scanning densitometry for each year in the 10-year period, 1970–1979. Extension (linear growth) of the coral skeleton is correlated negatively with bulk density (mass per unit volume) and positively with calcification (mass addition). Density and mass are slightly positively correlated. No one parameter, however, is a perfect predictor of another. At least two parameters, from which the third can be calculated, are required for complete description of coral growth. The variations of parameters of subannual density bands in this study do not convey information additional to those of annual bands.When compared to a pristine site in St. Croix, coral from Round Reef within Christiansted Harbor (a location of past dredging and sewage pollution) have equivalent (and high) extension but significantly lower density and calcification. On the south coast, corals from a location of major dredging activity in the past have relatively low extension and calcification. These growth anomalies are probably pollution related. Collections of corals from one south coast site may have been biased by hurricane effects to nonrepresentative samples
A Bichromatic Incidence Bound and an Application
We prove a new, tight upper bound on the number of incidences between points
and hyperplanes in Euclidean d-space. Given n points, of which k are colored
red, there are O_d(m^{2/3}k^{2/3}n^{(d-2)/3} + kn^{d-2} + m) incidences between
the k red points and m hyperplanes spanned by all n points provided that m =
\Omega(n^{d-2}). For the monochromatic case k = n, this was proved by Agarwal
and Aronov.
We use this incidence bound to prove that a set of n points, no more than n-k
of which lie on any plane or two lines, spans \Omega(nk^2) planes. We also
provide an infinite family of counterexamples to a conjecture of Purdy's on the
number of hyperplanes spanned by a set of points in dimensions higher than 3,
and present new conjectures not subject to the counterexample.Comment: 12 page
Is automatic imitation a specialized form of stimulus–response compatibility? Dissociating imitative and spatial compatibilities
In recent years research on automatic imitation has received considerable attention because it represents an experimental platform for investigating a number of inter-related theories suggesting that the perception of action automatically activates corresponding motor programs. A key debate within this research centers on whether automatic imitation is any different than other long-term S-R associations, such as spatial stimulus-response compatibility. One approach to resolving this issue is to examine whether automatic imitation shows similar response characteristics as other classes of stimulus-response compatibility. This hypothesis was tested by comparing imitative and spatial compatibility effects with a two alternative forced-choice stimulus-response compatibility paradigm and two tasks: one that involved selecting a response to the stimulus (S-R) and one that involved selecting a response to the opposite stimulus (OS-R), i.e., the one not presented. The stimulus for both tasks was a left or right hand with either the index or middle finger tapping down. Speeded responses were performed with the index or middle finger of the right hand in response to the finger identity or the left-right spatial position of the fingers. Based on previous research and a connectionist model, we predicted standard compatibility effects for both spatial and imitative compatibility in the S-R task, and a reverse compatibility effect for spatial compatibility but not for imitative compatibility in the OS-R task. The results from the mean response times, mean percentage of errors, and response time distributions all converged to support these predictions. A second noteworthy result was that the recoding of the finger identity in the OS-R task required significantly more time than the recoding of the left-right spatial position, but the encoding time for the two stimuli in the S-R task was equivalent. In sum, this evidence suggests that the processing of spatial and imitative compatibility is dissociable with regard to two different processes in dual processing models of stimulus-response compatibility
A Rule-Based Approach to Analyzing Database Schema Objects with Datalog
Database schema elements such as tables, views, triggers and functions are
typically defined with many interrelationships. In order to support database
users in understanding a given schema, a rule-based approach for analyzing the
respective dependencies is proposed using Datalog expressions. We show that
many interesting properties of schema elements can be systematically determined
this way. The expressiveness of the proposed analysis is exemplarily shown with
the problem of computing induced functional dependencies for derived relations.
The propagation of functional dependencies plays an important role in data
integration and query optimization but represents an undecidable problem in
general. And yet, our rule-based analysis covers all relational operators as
well as linear recursive expressions in a systematic way showing the depth of
analysis possible by our proposal. The analysis of functional dependencies is
well-integrated in a uniform approach to analyzing dependencies between schema

On the Number of Facets of Three-Dimensional Dirichlet Stereohedra III: Full Cubic Groups
We are interested in the maximum possible number of facets that Dirichlet
stereohedra for three-dimensional crystallographic groups can have. The problem
for non-cubic groups was studied in previous papers by D. Bochis and the second
author (Discrete Comput. Geom. 25:3 (2001), 419-444, and Beitr. Algebra Geom.,
47:1 (2006), 89-120). This paper deals with ''full'' cubic groups, while
''quarter'' cubic groups are left for a subsequent paper. Here, ''full'' and
''quarter'' refers to the recent classification of three-dimensional
crystallographic groups by Conway, Delgado-Friedrichs, Huson and Thurston
(math.MG/9911185, Beitr. Algebra Geom. 42.2 (2001), 475-507).
Our main result in this paper is that Dirichlet stereohedra for any of the 27
full groups cannot have more than 25 facets. We also find stereohedra with 17

New Developments in WHIZARD Version 2.6
We describe recent additions to the WHIZARD 2 Monte-Carlo event generator
