    Through the force of Western humanitarian organizations and the media, the UN was pressured to respond to the atrocities committed against women in the Bosnian genocide. This response resulted in the establishment of the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia (ICTY), which put the prosecution of sexual violence and the maintenance of women’s rights on the UN agenda.
