Cognitive and emotional responses to urban and nature exposures in the Brazilian Cerrado
Contact with nature increases human health and well-being by stress reduction, positive-emotion
elicitation, and attentional restoration. Despite the outstanding Brazilian biodiversity, we are unaware of
studies linking nature experiences to welfare. Herein, we applied cognitive tasks and emotional self-reports
in 33 subjects, before and after a 30-minute walk in a nature trail at Parque Nacional de Brasília, and compared them with the same tests applied before and after a 30-minute walk in Brasiliaôs downtown. We recorded improvements in emotional self-reports after nature experience, while the urban exposure caused decreases in self-reported happiness and increases in negative emotions. These results highlight the relevance of natural settings for cognitive and emotional well-being and the need for a better understanding of the relationships between nature and human health. The recognition that mental health is an ecosystem service can improve the arguments for nature conservation, and the quality of life and public health
Basic psychological need satisfaction and thwarting: a study with brazilian professional players of League of Legends
Recently, the skill to play games has led to the professionalization of the activity in the form of “eSports” (electronic sports). Despite the popularity of eSports, little is known about its professional players from a psychological perspective. Given the importance of the coach-created environment in the athletes’ motivational processes, this study aimed to investigate the key psychological dimensions of the coach-created climate in 75 Brazilian professional players of League of Legends (LoL) considering the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) and Achievement Goal Theory (AGT). Fourteen hypotheses were tested, of which seven were confirmed. The empowering climate was a predictor of basic psychological-needs satisfaction and indirectly influenced autonomous motivation. The need satisfaction had a significant impact on both autonomous motivation and on lack of motivation, which, in turn, explained 56% of the variance in well-being and the intention to keep playing eSports. The disempowering climate was a predictor of psychological-needs thwarting but had no significant impact on autonomous motivation or lack of motivation. The results obtained support SDT and AGT in the context of eSports and were similar to those conducted with athletes from traditional sports, indicating that the empower-ing-and-disempowering-coaching-climates conceptualization applies not only to traditional sports athletes but also to professional eSports players.
Introduction: Though typically found in adolescents, acne frequently affects the adult population. In Portugal, no representative studies about acne prevalence in greater populational areas are known. This study had the following objectives: calculate acne prevalence in primary healthcare patients; its characteristics, including risk factors for onset and worsening; collect information concerning self-medication and/or prescribed treatment. Material and Methods: Application of a questionnaire and physical examination into a convenience sample, composed by adults from 20-60 years old that visited, in random days, five primary healthcare centers of the Greater Porto area. Results: From the 1,055 evaluated adults, acne prevalence was estimated at 61.5%. Only 36.8% of acne suffering adults was aware of their condition. More than half of tobacco users (62.3%) had acne. Just 25% of acne sufferers sought treatment. The most affected areas were the malars, differing from the younger disease form. Discussion: Acne prevalence was relatively higher than other studies. The results of this study have confirmed that acne seems to be related with increased calorie intake, tobacco smoking, whole milk and fat-reduced milk consumption, hirsutism, alopecia and seborrhea. Conclusion: In the primary healthcare set, more than half of adults were acne sufferers. These numbers show how important primary healthcare services can be in preventing and intervening when managing acne-related risk factors and psychosocial consequences.
Hyalinizing Granuloma: An Unusual Case of a Pulmonary Mass
We describe the case of pulmonary hyalinizing granuloma in a 34-year-old asymptomatic man who presented with a pulmonary nodule apparent by chest radiography and computed tomography (CT). He had a history of previous treatment for tuberculosis. His laboratory data were normal. Bronchoscopy and CT-guided percutaneous transthoracic fine needle aspiration cytology were inconclusive. The diagnosis was revealed after the histopathological examination of an open lung biopsy
Quality evaluation of labneh: a study with consumers
The labneh (Greek yoghurt) is a type of fermented milk product characterized by the concentration of the solids of the traditional yoghurt. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the acceptance of 3 commercial brands of traditional Greek yogurt marketed in the city of Diamantina/MG; and to identify the attributes that influence the quality of the product. Analysis of the color (L*, a*, b*), texture, acidity, pH and sensory evaluation were performed. It was observed variation among the samples regarding all analyzed parameters but b* value. In relation to the sensory evaluation, throughout the test of means, it was observed that the brands IA and IB were the most accepted. Through the preference map analysis, it could be concluded that the higher percent of lactic acid of the sample IA and the higher firmness of the sample IB were the parameters responsible for the greater acceptance of these brands. It was observed that the texture and acidity are important attributes related to the choice of the product. Therefore, the results of this study may help in future work of development of new formulations
Sclerosing Variant of the Bronchioloalveolar Carcinoma: Imaging Findings in an Atypical Case
Bronchioloalveolar carcinoma remains one of the most enigmatic lung cancers, demonstrating varied growth patterns, mixed histological features, and confusing clinical manifestations. This paper reports a case of an unusual form of presentation: a sclerosing type associated with desmoplastic reaction and cicatrization. A 75-year-old woman was admitted with persistent dry cough and progressive dyspnea. Physical examination showed bilateral inspiratory crackles. A chest radiograph and high-resolution computed tomography demonstrated confluent airspace nodules, forming areas of consolidation in both lungs, with signs of architectural distortion. The lung biopsy revealed a nonmucinous sclerosing bronchioloalveolar carcinoma
Pulmonary Alveolar Microlithiasis: A Case Report with Emphasis on Imaging Findings
Pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) is a rare disease characterized by the presence of small calculi in the alveolar space. The authors report a case of a 21-year-old man with a 2-year history of shortness of breath on exertion and dry cough. Physical examination was altered only for crackles at auscultation. Pulmonary function revealed a mild restrictive ventilatory defect and the chest radiograph demonstrated paracardiac confluence of dense micronodular infiltrate. High-resolution CT scan revealed diffuse ground glass attenuation and septal thickening, more pronounced in lower pulmonary regions, with calcifications along the interlobar septa and subpleural regions. A transbronchial lung biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of PAM
Cavitated Conglomerate Mass in Silicosis Indicating Associated Tuberculosis
Silicosis is the most common occupational lung disease worldwide. It leads to respiratory impairment and may have associated infections that decrease pulmonary function. We describe the case of a 55-year-old man with chronic silicosis who presented with hemoptysis and a cavitated conglomerate mass. The final diagnosis was silicotuberculosis
