A study of the interacting binary V 393 Scorpii

We present high resolution J-band spectroscopy of V 393 Sco obtained with the CRIRES at the ESO Paranal Observatory along with a discussion of archival IUE spectra and published broad band magnitudes. The best fit to the spectral energy distribution outside eclipse gives T1T_{1}= 19000 ±\pm 500 KK for the gainer, T2T_{2}= 7250 ±\pm 300 KK for the donor, E(BV)E(B-V)= 0.13 ±\pm 0.02 mag. and a distance of dd= 523 ±\pm 60 pc, although circumstellar material was not considered in the fit. We argue that V 393 Sco is not a member of the open cluster M7. The shape of the He I 1083 nm line shows orbital modulations that can be interpreted in terms of an optically thick pseudo-photosphere mimicking a hot B-type star and relatively large equatorial mass loss through the Lagrangian L3 point during long cycle minimum. IUE spectra show several (usually asymmetric) absorption lines from highly ionized metals and a narrow Lα\alpha emission core on a broad absorption profile. The overall behavior of these lines suggests the existence of a wind at intermediate latitudes. From the analysis of the radial velocities we find M2/M1M_{2}/M_{1}= 0.24 ±\pm 0.02 and a mass function of ff= 4.76 ±\pm 0.24 M\odot. Our observations favor equatorial mass loss rather than high latitude outflows as the cause for the long variability.Comment: 13 pages, 14 figures, 7 tables. The Effective Temperatures of Hot Stars II. The Early-O Types

We derive the stellar parameters of a sample of Galactic early-O type stars by analysing their UV and Far-UV spectra from FUSE (905-1187A), IUE, HST-STIS and ORFEUS (1200-2000A). The data have been modeled with spherical, hydrodynamic, line-blanketed, non-LTE synthetic spectra computed with the WM-basic code. We obtain effective temperatures ranging from Teff = 41,000 K to 39,000 K for the O3-O4 dwarf stars, and Teff = 37,500 K for the only supergiant of the sample (O4 If+). Our values are lower than those from previous empirical calibrations for early-O types by up to 20%. The derived luminosities of the dwarf stars are also lower by 6 to 12%; however, the luminosity of the supergiant is in agreement with previous calibrations within the error bars. Our results extend the trend found for later-O types in a previous work by Bianchi & Garcia.Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal. 38 pages (including 9 figures and 4 tables

The angular momentum-vs-mass relation and the distribution of mass ratios for visual binary systems

    Get PDF
The investigation of the angular momentum vs mass relation for binary stars is completed with a study of the 847 systems contained in the Fourth Catalog of Orbits of Visual Binary Stars. Because both J and M of a visual binary depend steeply on the distance to the system (5th and 3rd powers, respectively), and many of the distances are not well known, the study makes use of an auxiliary parameter R which is independent of distance and proportional to JM-5/3. R appears to be uncorrelated with M for the 789 systems for which both can be determined. The non-correlation implies that J ∝M5/3, expected from Kepler's third law, provides a better fit to the visual binaries than does J ∝M2, predicted by some more complex considerations. The distribution function f(q=M2/M1) of mass ratios for the visual binaries results as a byproduct of the investigation. It peaks extremely sharply toward q=1.0 (much more so than for spectroscopic binaries). Because most visual binaries are wide enough to consist of stars that condensed independently (and so that can be thought of as chosen at random from an initial mass function), one expects the real f(q) to rise toward low ratios. Observational selection against the discovery and study of systems with large magnitude differences between the components must be very large indeed to account for the discrepancy between expectation and observation. The alternative is a mechanism for formation of wide binaries that favours equal components. The distribution of mass ratios for eclipsing binaries is given in an appendix. It peaks strongly at q=0.6-0.75 and largely reflects processes of angular momentum, mass, and energy exchange between the stars in contact systems. © 1986 D. Reidel Publishing Company

Study of the adhesion between TPU and PLA in multi-material 3D printing

Purpose In the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF/FDM) technology, the multi-material manufacturing additive method is achieved by a single nozzle or multiple nozzles working simultaneously with different materials. However, the adhesion between different materials at the boundary interface in FDM multi-material printing is a limiting factor. These studies are concerned with improving and study the adhesion between two polymers. Design/methodology/approach Due to the numerous applications and possibilities of 3D printed objects, combining different materials has become a subject of interest. PLA is an alternative to the use of petrochemical-based polymers. Thermoplastic Polyurethane is a flexible material that can achieve different characteristics when combined with a rigid filament, such as PLA. To improve the adhesion between PLA and TPU in multi-material FFF/FDM, we propose the comparison of different processes: post-processing with acetone immersion, surface activation during printing with Acetone, surface activation during printing with tetrahydrofuran, post-processing annealing, and connection of printed parts with tetrahydrofuran. Findings Modifying the 3D printing process improved the quality of the adhesive bond between the two different polymers. Activation of the surface with THF is the treatment method recommended by the authors due to the low impact on the deformation/degradation of the object. Research limitations/implications In the study, adhesion was considered in relation to the circular pattern of surface development. Further analysis should include other surface development patterns and changes in printing parameters, e.g. process temperatures and layer application speed. Practical implications 3D printing with multi-materials, such as PLA biopolymer and thermoplastic polyurethane, allows for the creation of flexible connections. The strengthening of the biopolymer broadens the possibilities of using polylactide. Examples of applications include: automotive (elements, where flexible TPU absorbs vibrations and protects PLA from cracking), medicine (prostheses with flexible elements ensuring mobility in the joints). Originality/value Multi-material printing is a new trend in 3D printing research, and this research is aimed at promoting the use and expanding the possibilities of using PLA biopolymer

Electrochemical Deposition of Nanowires in Porous Alumina

Electrochemical deposition is a very efficient method for producing many types of modern materials. The method is not expensive and does not have a limit for sample size. In our work the preparation of Ni, Co and Fe nanowires is presented. The obtained nanowires had different diameter and length which were tunable by template porous material and time of deposition, respectively. The quality of the prepared wires was dependent also on deposition mode. The smallest wires of the diameter around 40 nm were prepared in porous anodic alumina oxide obtained from oxalic acid. The largest ones, around 120 nm, were produced in phosphoric acid. The length could be as large as the thickness of the oxide and reached up to about 1 μm. The morphology of wires was studied by atomic force microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The magnetic characterization was done with usage of magnetic force microscopy and the Mössbauer spectroscopy. The wires show magnetization along their growth direction
