Multimodal Sparse Coding for Event Detection
Unsupervised feature learning methods have proven effective for
classification tasks based on a single modality. We present multimodal sparse
coding for learning feature representations shared across multiple modalities.
The shared representations are applied to multimedia event detection (MED) and
evaluated in comparison to unimodal counterparts, as well as other feature
learning methods such as GMM supervectors and sparse RBM. We report the
cross-validated classification accuracy and mean average precision of the MED
system trained on features learned from our unimodal and multimodal settings

Busy Beaver Scores and Alphabet Size
We investigate the Busy Beaver Game introduced by Rado (1962) generalized to
non-binary alphabets. Harland (2016) conjectured that activity (number of
steps) and productivity (number of non-blank symbols) of candidate machines
grow as the alphabet size increases. We prove this conjecture for any alphabet
size under the condition that the number of states is sufficiently large. For
the measure activity we show that increasing the alphabet size from two to
three allows an increase. By a classical construction it is even possible to
obtain a two-state machine increasing activity and productivity of any machine
if we allow an alphabet size depending on the number of states of the original
machine. We also show that an increase of the alphabet by a factor of three
admits an increase of activity

Do naked singularities generically occur in generalized theories of gravity?
A new mechanism for causing naked singularities is found in an effective
superstring theory. We investigate the gravitational collapse in a spherically
symmetric Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton system in the presence of a pure
cosmological constant "potential", where the system has no static black hole
solution. We show that once gravitational collapse occurs in the system, naked
singularities necessarily appear in the sense that the field equations break
down in the domain of outer communications. This suggests that in generalized
theories of gravity, the non-minimally coupled fields generically cause naked
singularities in the process of gravitational collapse if the system has no

Quasi-normal modes of Schwarzschild-de Sitter black holes
The low-laying frequencies of characteristic quasi-normal modes (QNM) of
Schwarzschild-de Sitter (SdS) black holes have been calculated for fields of
different spin using the 6th-order WKB approximation and the approximation by
the P\"{o}shl-Teller potential. The well-known asymptotic formula for large
is generalized here on a case of the Schwarzchild-de Sitter black hole. In the
limit of the near extreme term the results given by both methods are
in a very good agreement, and in this limit fields of different spin decay with

Are HIV smartphone apps and online interventions fit for purpose?
Sexual health is an under-explored area of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI), particularly sexually transmitted infections such as HIV. Due to the stigma associated with these infections, people are often motivated to seek information online. With the rise of smartphone and web apps, there is enormous potential for technology to provide easily accessible information and resources. However, using online information raises important concerns about the trustworthiness of these resources and whether they are fit for purpose. We conducted a review of smartphone and web apps to investigate the landscape of currently available online apps and whether they meet the diverse needs of people seeking information on HIV online. Our functionality review revealed that existing technology interventions have a one-size-fits-all approach and do not support the breadth and complexity of HIV-related support needs. We argue that technology-based interventions need to signpost their offering and provide tailored support for different stages of HIV, including prevention, testing, diagnosis and management
Stability of degenerate Cauchy horizons in black hole spacetimes
In the multihorizon black hole spacetimes, it is possible that there are
degenerate Cauchy horizons with vanishing surface gravities. We investigate the
stability of the degenerate Cauchy horizon in black hole spacetimes. Despite
the asymptotic behavior of spacetimes (flat, anti-de Sitter, or de Sitter), we
find that the Cauchy horizon is stable against the classical perturbations, but

A complete set of polarization transfer observables has been measured for the
reaction at and . The total spin transfer and the observable
deduced from the measured polarization transfer observables indicate that
the spin--dipole resonance at has greater
strength than strength, which is consistent with recent experimental and
theoretical studies. The results also indicate a predominance of the spin-flip
and unnatural-parity transition strength in the continuum. The exchange tensor

Advances in the Geology of the Tobacco Root Mountains, Montana, and Their Implications for the History of the Northern Wyoming Province
Integrated studies by Keck Geology Consortium participants have generated many new insights into the Precambrian geology of the Tobacco Root Mountains. We have clarified the tectonic setting and origin of two suites of metamorphic rocks: (1) a quartzofeldspathic gneiss complex with associated metasupracrustal rocks (the combined Indian Creek and Pony–Middle Mountain Metamorphic Suites) that originated in a continental arc setting between 3.35 and 3.2 Ga with subsequent sedimentation and (2) mafic metavolcanic rocks with intercalated metasedimentary rocks (the Spuhler Peak Metamorphic Suite) from a suprasubduction zone ophiolite or backarc basin possibly of Proterozoic age. A poorly preserved metamorphic event at 2.45 Ga affected the former but not the latter, as did the intrusion of rift-related mafic dikes and sills at 2.06 Ga. Both suites were amalgamated, metamorphosed to at least upper amphibolite facies, subjected to simple shear strain and folded into map- and outcrop-scale sheath folds, and tectonically unroofed during the period 1.78 to 1.71 Ga. We name this event the Big Sky orogeny.
The Proterozoic geology of the Tobacco Root Mountains can be integrated with coeval features of the geology of the northern Wyoming province to outline a northeast-trending, southeast-vergent belt as the Big Sky orogen. The Big Sky orogen consists of a metamorphic hinterland flanked to the southeast by a foreland of discrete ductile shear zones cutting older basement, and to the northwest by arc-related metaplutonic bodies and the trace of a fossil subduction zone in the upper mantle. Archean blocks to the north of the Big Sky orogen may have been accreted as allochthonous terranes during collision and convergence.
The remarkable synchroneity of collision along the Big Sky orogen with tectonism in the Trans-Hudson orogen along the eastern margin of the Wyoming province and in the Cheyenne belt to the south of the province raise profound but unanswered questions about the process by which the Wyoming province was added to the rest of the ancestral North American craton
