Inclusive Media Education in the Diverse Classroom:A Participatory Action Research in Germany

    Get PDF
Media literacy has become a key concept for understanding how different citizens develop the capacity to participate in the mediatized society. One key question here is how media literacy education can support people of diverse backgrounds to have equal chances of benefiting from the media. Furthermore, as many schools are characterized by superdiversity, especially in bigger cities (Crul et al., 2013), there is also a need for research on media education and diversity. This article presents the findings of the research project INCLUDED, a participatory action research about media education in a secondary school in Germany. The project aims to analyse the everyday media use of young people with diverse cultural backgrounds living in a socio-economically disadvantaged neighbourhood and co-develop teaching modules on media literacy education integrating an intercultural perspective. The fieldwork of the project (January 2020–April 2021) included participatory observations (online and offline), teacher interviews, and focus groups with the students (13–15 years). The article will particularly focus on one teaching module that focused on TikTok and Instagram influencers. The students’ presentations in the classroom demonstrated how the diverse cultural backgrounds of the students also shaped the content that they consumed on social media. Analysing this teaching module as an example, this article discusses the benefits and challenges of designing a more inclusive and participatory approach to media education in the context of culturally diverse schools as an alternative to culture-blindness and over-emphasis of cultural differences

The aim of this study is to evaluate and develop statistical models for predicting the strength parameters (point load strength, uniaxial compressive strength and Brazilian tensile strength) of igneous rocks, using slake durability index (SDI). In this study, the index, mechanical and slake durability index parameters of the 23 rock samples collected from different locations of the Central Anatolia have been detected by testing. A very high exponential relation between the strength parameters and SDI was found out. However, it has seen that the equations developed cannot estimate the strength parameters when SDI values greater than 98%. The relationship between strength parameters and SDI was reexamined in the case of SDI values being greater and less than 98%, and very high correlations were developed for strength parameters. These developed empirical equations can be applicable for igneous rocks having similar geomechanical properties

Thesis (Master)--Izmir Institute of Technology, Molecular Biology and Genetics, Izmir, 2009Includes bibliographical references (leaves: 28-30)Text in English; Abstract: Turkish and Englishviii, 32 leavesNickel is an essential micronutrient for plant growth. However, an excess amount of nickel is toxic for plants and animals. The Beta maritima plant which is known crop as salt and manganese tolerant nature. In this study, we aimed to identify nickel detoxification metabolism genes of Beta maritima by screening plant.s overexpressed cDNA library in yeast cells. After initial screening, three transformants were isolated that were able to grow in the presence of toxic nickel concentration. After the sequence analyses, three genes were named as NIC3, NIC6 and NIC8. We tested the growth rates of the yeast cells those were overexpressing cDNAs in solid mediums and showed similar nickel detoxification patterns. Then intracellular nickel concentrations were measured to see whether mentioned cDNAs pump nickel out of the cell or not. We also analysed the gene expression levels of NIC3 and NIC6 genes after appllying nickel stress to the plants to see the relations between nickel treatment and transcription changes of these two genes. Our data suggest that NIC3, NIC6 and NIC8 genes, besides their other functions, confer yeast cells nickel tolerance and may play roles in heavy metal detoxification for plant cells

Bu çalışmanın amacı; Kırşehir ili merkezindeki liselerde beden eğitimi dersi hedeflerinin gerçekleşmesinin önündeki engelleri belirlemektir. Araştırma, 2015-2016 eğitim-öğretim yılı I. döneminde Kırşehir ilinde devlete bağlı bulunan 9 farklı lisede öğrenim gören 632 öğrenci ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. "Fiziksel yetersizlik (alt yapı/tesis)" alt boyutunda Genel Liseler-Güzel Sanatlar Lisesi-Meslek Liseleri öğrencileri, Fen ve Anadolu Liseleri öğrencilerine göre anlamlı düzeyde olumsuz düşünce içerisindedirlerThe purpose of this study is to determine the barriers in front of the realization of physical education course goals in the high schools in Kırşehir city center. The study was carried out with 632 students attending 9 different high schools in Kırşehir in the Fall Semester of 2015-2016 academic year. The 'Physical Education and Sport Facilities and Inadequacies Scale (PESFIS)' developed by the researcher was used as data collection tool. The scale consists of 21 items and 4 sub-dimensions ("institutional inability", "test anxiety and indifference", "student experience" and "infrastructural inadequacies"). As a result, Boys and girls think similar. In terms of the "Institutional disability" sub-dimension, the mean values of the two school groups were close to each other. Science and Anatolian High School students were less concerned about important examinations than General-Fine Arts-Vocational High School students and it was observed that they were more interested in physical education and sports activities. A positive situation was observed in favor of the Science and Anatolian High School students in the Student Experience subdimension including "Problem occurred during physical education and sport activities (messing hair up, sweating, etc)", "Fear of failure", "Negative experiences in the past", " Habits like Internet, TV, playstation, etc.", "mixed education" and "huge class size" items. In the "Infrastructural inadequacies" sub-dimension, General High School-Fine Arts High SchoolVocational High School students think more negatively at a significant level than Science and Anatolian High School student

Comparison of the cystocholedochal angle in patients with choledocholithiasis and only cholelithiasis

    Get PDF
This study aims to evaluate the relation between the cystocholedochal angle (SCA) and choledocholithiasis. The data of 3.350 patients were reviewed retrospectively and a total of 628 patients who met the criteria were included in the study. The patients included in the study were divided into three groups as patients with choledocholithiasis (Group I), patients with only cholelithiasis (Group II), and patients without gallstones as control group (Group III). Measurements of SCA, cystic, bile, and common hepatic ducts (CHDs) were made on magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP) images. Laboratory findings and demographic characteristics of the patients were also recorded. Of the patients included in the study 64.2% were female, 35.8% were male, and their age ranged from 18 to 93 (mean 53.37 +/- 18.87 years). While the mean SCA values of all patient groups were 35.44 degrees +/- 10.44 degrees, the mean length of cystic, bile and CHDs were 28.91 +/- 9.30, 40.28 +/- 12.91, 27.09 +/- 9.68 mm respectively. All measurements were higher in Group I in comparison to other groups, whereas all measurements of Group II were higher than those of Group III (p < 0.001). Statistical analysis suggests that a SCA of 33.5 degrees and above is an important criterion for diagnosis of choledocholithiasis. Increase of SCA raises the likelihood of choledocholithiasis, as it facilitates the passage of stones from gallbladder into the bile ducts. This is the first study to compare SCA in patients with choledocholithiasis and those with only cholelithiasis. Therefore, we think that this study is important and will be a guide for clinical evaluation

Wideband printed planar monopole antenna for PCS, UWB and X-band applications

    Get PDF
In this paper, a printed planar monopole antenna (PPMA) is presented for PCS, UWB and X-band. The antenna is designed in two stages. In the design of the preliminary PPMA used to obtain the proposed PPMA, the structure is divided into sections, and they are optimized in the sense of bottom to up strategy. The bandwidth is enhanced by employing tapered transitions and inset feed. The resulting antenna operates between 2.37 GHz and 12 GHz with VSWR < 2 and an average peak realized gain of 4.95 dB. Therefore, the preliminary antenna can be considered to be suitable for Bluetooth, WLAN, WiMAX, UWB and X-band. The proposed PPMA is designed by implementing slots on the preliminary PPMA to include PCS, and to suppress Bluetooth and commonly used WLAN and WiMAX bands, the ones allocated out of UWB. The proposed antenna operates in the 1.67 GHz– 1.91 GHz and 3GHz–15 GHz bands with VSWR < 2. The peak realized gain (Gpr) in PCS is 1.32 dB at 1.8GHz, and the average Gpr is 5 dB for the 3 GHz–15 GHz band. The group delay performances are also examined, and the maximum group delay deviations of preliminary and proposed PPMAs are observed as 1 ns and 1.25 ns, respectively

    Get PDF
This editorial introduces the thematic issue titled Inclusive Media Literacy Education for Diverse Societies. We start by introducing our aims for developing a more open and inviting approach to media education. We argue for a media education that acknowledges a variety of voices, and that provides skills and recognition for everyone, irrespective of their social class, status, gender identification, sexuality, race, ability, and other variables. The articles in this issue address the role of media literacy education in relation to questions of in- and exclusion, social justice, voice, and listening. The issue covers a variety of critical, non-Western perspectives needed to challenge dominant regimes of representation. The editorial is enriched by the artist Neetje’s illustrations of the workshop that preceded the publication of this thematic issue

Seismic Performance Evaluation of RC Buildings Using Irregularity Based Indices

    Get PDF
Earthquakes may cause structural and non-structural severefig damage and failure during seismic excitations. These collapses and damages start from the weak points of the structures. The reason for these weak points in structures is the mass, rigidity, and discontinuity in the geometry of the structure. These vertical irregularities are one of the major reasons for the failure of structures during earthquakes. Fifteen models are considered in this project to examine the behavior of the building with different heights and vertical irregularities. The seismic response of these selected setback frame structures have been compared with regular frame structures using finite element method-based software SAP2000 v22. In this work regular and setback models of 5 storey, 9 storey, and 13 storey RC frames are considered for modal and dynamic analysis by considering earthquake loads. Furthermore, irregularities indexes comparisons are carried out and discussed in detail for models. The methods used for the analysis are the static method and time history method
