What the Future ‘Might’ Brings
This paper concerns a puzzle about the interaction of epistemic modals and future tense. In cases of predictable forgetfulness, speakers cannot describe their future states of mind with epistemic modals under future tense, but promising theories of epistemic modals do not predict this. In §1, I outline the puzzle. In §2, I argue that it undermines a very general approach to epistemic modals that draws a tight connection between epistemic modality and evidence. In §3, I defend the assumption that tense can indeed scope over epistemic modals. In §4, I outline a new way of determining the domain of quantification of epistemic modals: epistemic modals quantify over the worlds compatible with the information accumulated within a certain interval. Information loss can change which interval is relevant for determining the domain. In §5, I defend the view from some objections. In §6, I explore the connections between my view of epistemic modality and circumstantial modality
How Strong Is a Counterfactual?
The literature on counterfactuals is dominated by strict accounts and variably strict accounts. Counterexamples to the principle of Antecedent Strengthening were thought to be fatal to SA; but it has been shown that by adding dynamic resources to the view, such examples can be accounted for. We broaden the debate between VSA and SA by focusing on a new strengthening principle, Strengthening with a Possibility. We show dynamic SA classically validates this principle. We give a counterexample to it and show that extra dynamic resources cannot help SA. We then show VSA accounts for the counterexample if it allows for orderings on worlds that are not almost-connected, and that such an ordering naturally falls out of a Kratzerian ordering source semantics. We conclude that the failure of Strengthening with a Possibility tells strongly against Dynamic SA and in favor of an ordering source-based version of VSA
Direct Detection of Dark Matter Debris Flows
Tidal stripping of dark matter from subhalos falling into the Milky Way
produces narrow, cold tidal streams as well as more spatially extended "debris
flows" in the form of shells, sheets, and plumes. Here we focus on the debris
flow in the Via Lactea II simulation, and show that this incompletely
phase-mixed material exhibits distinctive high velocity behavior. Unlike tidal
streams, which may not necessarily intersect the Earth's location, debris flow
is spatially uniform at 8 kpc and thus guaranteed to be present in the dark
matter flux incident on direct detection experiments. At Earth-frame speeds
greater than 450 km/s, debris flow comprises more than half of the dark matter
at the Sun's location, and up to 80% at even higher speeds. Therefore, debris
flow is most important for experiments that are particularly sensitive to the
high speed tail of the dark matter distribution, such as searches for light or
inelastic dark matter or experiments with directional sensitivity. We show that
debris flow yields a distinctive recoil energy spectrum and a broadening of the

We give an account that builds on the conditional analysis, but avoids its weaknesses by incorporating a layer of quantification over a contextually supplied set of actions

How the Adoption of a Sustainability Strategy builds on Organisational Competitive Advantage: A Pharmaceutical Case Study.
The purpose of the research is to understand how the adoption of a sustainability strategy builds on competitive advantage.
The research approach was exploratory in nature and an interpretivist approach was taken through the undertaking of in-depth interviews. Data was collected through a number of conducted interviews with employees from the pharmaceutical organisation, Takeda. These were semi-structured in nature and consisted of varying questions which provided for greater discussion in relation to the research objective.
The research served to uncover the positive relationship between sustainability and organisational competitive advantage, with significant benefits presented throughout the findings.
Limitations to this research were evident as the research is only concerned with one pharmaceutical organisation, who also happens to be one of the largest pharmaceutical organisations globally. Recommendations for further research are identified to further enhance the research.
The importance of top management support in relation to achieving a sustainable environment is evident. Support and investment are required for the implementation to be successful. Sustainability must be driven from the very top of the organisation as it must be enabled and empowered all the way through the organisatio

Chapter 1, 'What the Future "Might" Brings', develops a puzzle about epistemic modals and tense, showing that future tensed epistemic modals are surprisingly marked in cases of predictable forgetting. It gives a solution whereupon epistemic modals are monotonic: their domains only shrink going forward in time. It is noted that this property is also a feature of circumstantial modals and a new general picture of how epistemic and historical modality are related is proposed. Chapter 2, 'Putting "Ought"s Together', argues that deontic but not epistemic 'ought's appear to obey the inference pattern Agglomeration. It gives a new semantics for 'ought', where it is an existential quantifier over best propositions, and shows how this semantics together with pragmatic features of deontic contexts can explain the differing inferential properties of deontics and epistemics. Chapter 3, 'More Miners', generalises the now infamous miners problem to epistemic 'ought's. It shows that conservative non-probabilistic solutions do not extend to epistemic cases with the same structure. It solves the problem using probabilisitic orderings over propositions and draws some morals about the metasemantics of such orderings and the role of neutrality in the semantics of deontic modals.by David Boylan.Ph.
