Digital Micro-Credential Efficacy and Impact on Learner Confidence
This white paper details the findings of a research study conducted in 2022 over a six month period, in collaboration with a group of international cross-sector partners, as part of a Global Victoria EdTech Innovation Alliance initiative. Edalexâs Innovation Sprint aimed to increase learnersâ confidence in the expression of their workplace skills by issuing a Personal Evidence Record of the skills they had developed in their studies. This evidence could then be shared with employers, sending a signal to hire by demonstrating workplace readiness or signal of recognition in the workplace of upskilling. This research validated the proof of concept of the expected efficacy of our Credentialate platform. But what we didnât expect was the extent of the effectiveness of our solution on increasing learner confidence. The research results show that learners readily embraced the more detailed information included in the credential - such as a detailed description of the credential components, how learners were assessed and the links out to Rich Skill Descriptors (RSDs) that provided job market context. Credentialateâs Personal Evidence Record gave learners next-level understanding of what they had learnt and how they could apply it in their careers.
They felt informed and empowered, which for the University of Dayton cohort had a positive impact on 76% of learner confidence levels. Employers, too, were very open to the deeper story the evidence records told. They told us that it gave them insight into the learnerâs level of human capability. This is particularly valuable in graduate hiring, as it provides independent validation that theyâre ready for the workplace, setting them apart from other candidates.
The research project provided the opportunity to share knowledge and practice across providers and EdTech organizations and generate new ways of working in the emerging areas of micro-credential and skills ecosystems. The insights from the research should inform future policy and practice around skill transparency and personal evidence of learning, and their benefits to participants in the digital credentialing and skills ecosystems as well as the learner/earner ecosystem
ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF DESALINATION FOR SUB-SAHARAN AFRICA: A REVIEW OF PREFILTRATION AND MICROBIAL DESALINATION CELL TECHNOLOGY
Gemstone Team NOSALTOur research project has addressed the global need for greater accessibility to
potable drinking water, specifically within the regions of sub-Saharan Africa. Initially,
we planned to design a unique desalination system that was composed of a pre-filtration
unit, a microbial desalination cell (MDC) and a post-desalination treatment unit. When
in-person lab work was no longer feasible due to COVID-19 guidelines, we refocused our
project to review the construction, efficiency, and cost effectiveness of the different
designs of potential prefiltration units and MDC configurations. Our review of potential
prefiltration systems included both chemical and physical separation methods, and the
review of the MDC included the air cathode, biocathode and stacked configurations.
While researching the technical details of the prefiltration and MDC systems, we also
considered the cultural and societal impacts of introducing a technology such as the MDC
into our project region. Our project started as an analysis of an emerging technology, but
as the team has grown, the project has transformed into a comprehensive review of the
emerging microbial desalination technology and the societal impacts of implementing it
into some of the water scarce regions of coastal sub-Saharan Africa
Observations of vertical mixing in autumn and its effect on the autumn phytoplankton bloom
This work examines the seasonal cycle of density structure and its influence on primary production in a temperate shelf sea, with a particular focus on the breakdown of stratification in autumn. We do this by combining new, high resolution observations of water column structure, meteorological forcing, nitrate and chlorophyll fluorescence collected between March 2014 and July 2015 on the North West European Shelf. Our results challenge the generally accepted assumption that convection dominates over wind driven mixing resulting in seasonal breakdown of stratification. Furthermore we found, that vertical mixing in autumn not only transformed the vertical density structure but also the vertical structure of chlorophyll biomass and surface nutrients. The subsurface chlorophyll maximum was eroded and a vertically homogeneous profile of chlorophyll biomass established itself above the pycnocline. This increased mixing also led to replenishment of surface nitrate concentrations, which supported an autumn phytoplankton bloom. While the significance of phytoplankton blooms in autumn has previously not been well quantified, we argue that these can act as a significant contributor to the seasonal drawdown of carbon
Multidifferential study of identified charged hadron distributions in -tagged jets in proton-proton collisions at 13 TeV
Jet fragmentation functions are measured for the first time in proton-proton
collisions for charged pions, kaons, and protons within jets recoiling against
a boson. The charged-hadron distributions are studied longitudinally and
transversely to the jet direction for jets with transverse momentum 20 GeV and in the pseudorapidity range . The
data sample was collected with the LHCb experiment at a center-of-mass energy
of 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.64 fb. Triple
differential distributions as a function of the hadron longitudinal momentum
fraction, hadron transverse momentum, and jet transverse momentum are also
measured for the first time. This helps constrain transverse-momentum-dependent
fragmentation functions. Differences in the shapes and magnitudes of the
measured distributions for the different hadron species provide insights into
the hadronization process for jets predominantly initiated by light quarks.Comment: All figures and tables, along with machine-readable versions and any

Study of the decay
The decay is studied
in proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of TeV
using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5
collected by the LHCb experiment. In the system, the
state observed at the BaBar and Belle experiments is
resolved into two narrower states, and ,
whose masses and widths are measured to be where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second
systematic. The results are consistent with a previous LHCb measurement using a
prompt sample. Evidence of a new
state is found with a local significance of , whose mass and width
are measured to be and , respectively. In addition, evidence of a new decay mode
is found with a significance of
. The relative branching fraction of with respect to the
decay is measured to be , where the first
uncertainty is statistical, the second systematic and the third originates from

sample of proton-proton collision data corresponding to 3.0 fb of
integrated luminosity recorded by the LHCb experiment during 2011 and 2012. The
tau lepton is identified in the decay mode
. The measured values are

, where the first uncertainty is
statistical and the second is systematic. The correlation between these
measurements is . Results are consistent with the current average
of these quantities and are at a combined 1.9 standard deviations from the

Worldwide trends in population-based survival for children, adolescents, and young adults diagnosed with leukaemia, by subtype, during 2000â14 (CONCORD-3) : analysis of individual data from 258 cancer registries in 61 countries
Background Leukaemias comprise a heterogenous group of haematological malignancies. In CONCORD-3, we analysed
data for children (aged 0â14 years) and adults (aged 15â99 years) diagnosed with a haematological malignancy
during 2000â14 in 61 countries. Here, we aimed to examine worldwide trends in survival from leukaemia, by age and
morphology, in young patients (aged 0â24 years).
Methods We analysed data from 258 population-based cancer registries in 61 countries participating in CONCORD-3
that submitted data on patients diagnosed with leukaemia. We grouped patients by age as children (0â14 years),
adolescents (15â19 years), and young adults (20â24 years). We categorised leukaemia subtypes according to the
International Classification of Childhood Cancer (ICCC-3), updated with International Classification of Diseases
for Oncology, third edition (ICD-O-3) codes. We estimated 5-year net survival by age and morphology, with 95% CIs,
using the non-parametric Pohar-Perme estimator. To control for background mortality, we used life tables by
country or region, single year of age, single calendar year and sex, and, where possible, by race or ethnicity. All-age
survival estimates were standardised to the marginal distribution of young people with leukaemia included in the
analysis.
Findings 164563 young people were included in this analysis: 121328 (73·7%) children, 22963 (14·0%) adolescents, and
20272 (12·3%) young adults. In 2010â14, the most common subtypes were lymphoid leukaemia (28205 [68·2%] patients)
and acute myeloid leukaemia (7863 [19·0%] patients). Age-standardised 5-year net survival in children, adolescents, and
young adults for all leukaemias combined during 2010â14 varied widely, ranging from 46% in Mexico to more than
85% in Canada, Cyprus, Belgium, Denmark, Finland, and Australia. Individuals with lymphoid leukaemia had better
age-standardised survival (from 43% in Ecuador to â„80% in parts of Europe, North America, Oceania, and Asia) than
those with acute myeloid leukaemia (from 32% in Peru to â„70% in most high-income countries in Europe,
North America, and Oceania). Throughout 2000â14, survival from all leukaemias combined remained consistently
higher for children than adolescents and young adults, and minimal improvement was seen for adolescents and young
adults in most countries.
Interpretation This study offers the first worldwide picture of population-based survival from leukaemia in children,
adolescents, and young adults. Adolescents and young adults diagnosed with leukaemia continue to have lower
survival than children. Trends in survival from leukaemia for adolescents and young adults are important indicators
of the quality of cancer management in this age group.peer-reviewe
