Stochastic Analysis for Water Quality
This report demonstrates the feasibility of applying stochastic techniques to linear water quality models. The Monte Carlo, First Order, and Generation of Moment Equation techniques are applied to a long term phosphorus model of Lake Washington. The effect of uncertainty of the phosphours loading term on simulated phosphous levels is analyzed. All three stochastic techniques produced the same results. The simulated concentrations of phosphorus in the water column are very responsive to uncertainty in annual phosphorus loading, the sediment concentrations relatively insensitive. The Monte Carlo technique is shown to require the most computation time of the three stochastic techniques applied. The First Order and Generation of Moment Equation techniques are shown to be precise and efficent methods of stochastic analysis. In this application they required less than one thousandth the computation time of the Monte Carlo technique. The Generation of Moment Equations technique is also applied to a steady state salinity model of the Colorado River system. Two sources of uncertainty are considered: 1) the estimation of steady state values of salinity loading from a limited historic data base and 2) the estimation of salinity loading from irrigated land by a semi-empirical approach. Six stochastic simulations of the Colorado River system are presented. Coefficients of variations of simulated salinities at Imperial Dam are shown to vary from 5.7 to 10.3 percent. The major source of uncertainty in all simulations is the estimation of the steady state salinity loading with the agricultural loading term becoming important in some simulated management alternatives
Asymptotically optimal quantum channel reversal for qudit ensembles and multimode Gaussian states
We investigate the problem of optimally reversing the action of an arbitrary
quantum channel C which acts independently on each component of an ensemble of
n identically prepared d-dimensional quantum systems. In the limit of large
ensembles, we construct the optimal reversing channel R* which has to be
applied at the output ensemble state, to retrieve a smaller ensemble of m
systems prepared in the input state, with the highest possible rate m/n. The
solution is found by mapping the problem into the optimal reversal of Gaussian
channels on quantum-classical continuous variable systems, which is here solved
as well. Our general results can be readily applied to improve the
implementation of robust long-distance quantum communication. As an example, we
investigate the optimal reversal rate of phase flip channels acting on a
multi-qubit register.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Search for a T-odd, P-even Triple Correlation in Neutron Decay
Background: Time-reversal-invariance violation, or equivalently CP violation,
may explain the observed cosmological baryon asymmetry as well as signal
physics beyond the Standard Model. In the decay of polarized neutrons, the
triple correlation D\cdot(p_{e}\timesp_{\nu}) is a parity-even,
time-reversal- odd observable that is uniquely sensitive to the relative phase
of the axial-vector amplitude with respect to the vector amplitude. The triple
correlation is also sensitive to possible contributions from scalar and tensor
amplitudes. Final-state effects also contribute to D at the level of 1e-5 and
can be calculated with a precision of 1% or better. Purpose: We have improved
the sensitivity to T-odd, P-even interactions in nuclear beta decay. Methods:
We measured proton-electron coincidences from decays of longitudinally
polarized neutrons with a highly symmetric detector array designed to cancel
the time-reversal-even, parity-odd Standard-Model contributions to polarized
neutron decay. Over 300 million proton-electron coincidence events were used to
extract D and study systematic effects in a blind analysis. Results: We find D
= [-0.94\pm1.89(stat)\pm0.97(sys)]e-4. Conclusions: This is the most sensitive
measurement of D in nuclear beta decay. Our result can be interpreted as a
measurement of the phase of the ratio of the axial-vector and vector coupling
constants (CA/CV= |{\lambda}|exp(i{\phi}_AV)) with {\phi}_AV = 180.012{\deg}
\pm0.028{\deg} (68% confidence level) or to constrain time-reversal violating
scalar and tensor interactions that arise in certain extensions to the Standard
Model such as leptoquarks. This paper presents details of the experiment,

Evolutionary Roots of Property Rights; The Natural and Cultural Nature of Human Cooperation
Debates about the role of natural and cultural selection in the development of prosocial, antisocial and socially neutral mechanisms and behavior raise questions that touch property rights, cooperation, and conflict. For example, some researchers suggest that cooperation and prosociality evolved by natural selection (Hamilton 1964, Trivers 1971, Axelrod and Hamilton 1981, De Waal 2013, 2014), while others claim that natural selection is insufficient for the evolution of cooperation, which required in addition cultural selection (Sterelny 2013, Bowles and Gintis 2003, Seabright 2013, Norenzayan 2013). Some scholars focus on the complexity and hierarchical nature of the evolution of cooperation as involving different tools associated with lower and the higher levels of competition (Nowak 2006, Okasha 2006); others suggest that humans genetically inherited heuristics that favor prosocial behavior such as generosity, forgiveness or altruistic punishment (Ridley 1996, Bowles and Gintis 2004, Rolls 2005). We argue these mechanisms are not genetically inherited; rather, they are features inherited through cultural selection. To support this view we invoke inclusive fitness theory, which states that individuals tend to maximize their inclusive fitness, rather than maximizing group fitness. We further reject the older notion of natural group selection - as well as more recent versions (West, Mouden, Gardner 2011) – which hold that natural selection favors cooperators within a group (Wynne-Edwards 1962). For Wynne-Edwards, group selection leads to group adaptations; the survival of individuals therefore depends on the survival of the group and a sharing of resources. Individuals who do not cooperate, who are selfish, face extinction due to rapid and over-exploitation of resources
The Exomars Climate Sounder (EMCS) Investigation
The ExoMars Climate Sounder (EMCS) investigation is developed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (Principal Investigator J. T. Schofield) in collaboration with an international scientific team from France, the United Kingdom and the USA.
EMCS plans to map daily, global, pole-to-pole profiles of temperature, dust, water and CO2 ices, and water vapor from the proposed 2016 ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiter (EMTGO). These profiles are to be assimilated into Mars General Circulation Models (MGCMs) to generate global, interpolated fields of measured and derived parameters such as wind
Stochastic Interpolation of Precipitation Data From Multiple Sensors
Introduction: This report summarizes the work conducted under Grant No. ECE-8419189, Stochastic Interpolation of Precipitation Data from Multiple Sensors, which was awarded to Utah State University in September, 1985, and completed February 29, 1988. it also covers work under a supplemental award made in February, 1986. The final report is organized into four sections. The following section presents the objective of the research and a brief problem statment. Section 3 contains a summary of second-year work including the project team, work plan, work completed, and publications. In Section4, project conclusions are summarized. A summary of on-going future work is given in Section 5, together with our plans for publication of research results from this project. Copies of preliminary draft manuscripts and completed technical reports which have been prepared as a result of second-year activities are contained in the Appendices. A cummulative summary of project publications is presented in Appendix A
Approaches to co-production of research in care homes: a scoping review
Background: Using the technique of co-production to develop research is considered good practice. Co-production involves the public, practitioners and academics working together as equals throughout a research project. Co-production may help develop alternative ways of delivering care for older adults that are acceptable to those who live and work in care homes. However, guidance about applying co-production approaches in this context is lacking. This scoping review aims to map co-production approaches used in care homes for older adults in previous research to support the inclusion of residents and care staff as equal collaborators in future studies. Methods: A scoping review was conducted using the Joanna Briggs Institute scoping review methodology. Seven electronic databases were searched for peer-reviewed primary studies using co-production approaches in care home settings for older adults. Studies were independently screened against eligibility criteria by two reviewers. Citation searching was completed. Data relating to study characteristics, co-production approaches used, including any barriers and facilitators, was charted by one reviewer and checked by another. Data was summarised using tables and diagrams with an accompanying narrative description. A collaborator group of care home and health service representatives were involved in the interpretation of the findings from their perspectives. Results: 19 studies were selected for inclusion. A diverse range of approaches to co-production and engaging key stakeholders in care home settings were identified. 11 studies reported barriers and 13 reported facilitators affecting the co-production process. Barriers and facilitators to building relationships and achieving inclusive, equitable and reciprocal co-production were identified in alignment with the five NIHR principles. Practical considerations were also identified as potential barriers and facilitators. Conclusion: The components of co-production approaches, barriers and facilitators identified should inform the design of future research using co-production approaches in care homes. Future studies should be explicit in reporting what is meant by co-production, the methods used to support co-production, and steps taken to enact the principles of co-production. Sharing of key learning is required to support this field to develop. Evaluation of co-production approaches, including participants’ experiences of taking part in co-production processes, are areas for future research in care home settings
The BNO-LNGS joint measurement of the solar neutrino capture rate in 71Ga
We describe a cooperative measurement of the capture rate of solar neutrinos
by the reaction 71Ga(\nu_e,e^-)71Ge. Extractions were made from a portion of
the gallium target in the Russian-American Gallium Experiment SAGE and the
extraction samples were transported to the Gran Sasso laboratory for synthesis
and counting at the Gallium Neutrino Observatory GNO. Six extractions of this
type were made and the resultant solar neutrino capture rate was 64
^{+24}_{-22} SNU, which agrees well with the overall result of the gallium
experiments. The major purpose of this experiment was to make it possible for
SAGE to continue their regular schedule of monthly solar neutrino extractions
without interruption while a separate experiment was underway to measure the
response of 71Ga to neutrinos from an 37Ar source. As side benefits, this
experiment proved the feasibility of long-distance sample transport in ultralow
background radiochemical experiments and familiarized each group with the

Symbolic closure: Towards a renewed sociological perspective on the relationship between higher education, credentials and the graduate labour market
This article explores how our understanding of the graduate labour market can be improved by re-assessing some of the insights of the conflictual tradition within sociology. In particular, its theorising of ‘social closure’ and the use of educational credentials within the labour market remain highly relevant. Yet these ideas need to be modified to better deal with the current social, economic and educational contexts. This article extends the social closure literature to deal with some of the changes within the graduate labour market by turning to Pierre Bourdieu’s ideas on symbolic violence. I will argue that ‘symbolic closure’, the reliance on exclusion through categorisation and classification, becomes of greater importance in a graduate labour market that no longer offers any clarity about what graduate skills, jobs and rewards constitute and signify
