The Allen Telescope Array Twenty-centimeter Survey -- A 700-Square-Degree, Multi-Epoch Radio Dataset -- II: Individual Epoch Transient Statistics
We present our second paper on the Allen Telescope Array Twenty-centimeter
Survey (ATATS), a multi-epoch, ~700 sq. deg. radio image and catalog at 1.4
GHz. The survey is designed to detect rare, bright transients as well as to
commission the ATA's wide-field survey capabilities. ATATS explores the
challenges of multi-epoch transient and variable source surveys in the domain
of dynamic range limits and changing (u,v) coverage.
Here we present images made using data from the individual epochs, as well as
a revised image combining data from all ATATS epochs. The combined image has
RMS noise 3.96 mJy / beam, with a circular beam of 150 arcsec FWHM. The
catalog, generated using a false detection rate algorithm, contains 4984
sources, and is >90% complete to 37.9 mJy. The catalogs generated from snapshot
images of the individual epochs contain between 1170 and 2019 sources over the
564 sq. deg. area in common to all epochs. The 90% completeness limits of the
single epoch catalogs range from 98.6 to 232 mJy.
We compare the catalog generated from the combined image to those from
individual epochs, and from the NRAO VLA Sky Survey (NVSS), a legacy survey at
the same frequency. We are able to place new constraints on the transient
population: fewer than 6e-4 transients / sq. deg., for transients brighter than
350 mJy with characteristic timescales of minutes to days. This strongly rules
out an astronomical origin for the ~1 Jy sources reported by Matsumura et al.
(2009), based on their stated rate of 3.1e-3 / sq. deg.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figures, ApJ accepte
The First Detailed X-ray Observations of High-Redshift, Optically-Selected Clusters: XMM-Newton Results for Cl 1324+3011 at z = 0.76 and Cl 1604+4304 at z = 0.90
We present the first detailed X-ray observations of optically-selected
clusters at high redshift. Two clusters, Cl 1324+3011 at z = 0.76 and Cl
1604+4304 at z = 0.90, were observed with XMM-Newton. The optical center of
each cluster is coincident with an extended X-ray source whose emission is
detected out to a radius of 0.5 Mpc. The emission from each cluster appears
reasonably circular, with some indication of asymmetries and more complex
morphologies. Similarly to other optically-selected clusters at redshifts of z
> 0.4, both clusters are modest X-ray emitters with bolometric luminosities of
only Lx = 1.4 - 2.0 x 10^(44) erg/s. We measure gas temperatures of T = 2.88
(+0.71/-0.49) keV for Cl 1324+3011 and 2.51 (+1.05/-0.69) keV for Cl 1604+4304.
The X-ray properties of both clusters are consistent with the high-redshift
Lx-T relation measured from X-ray-selected samples at z > 0.5. However, based
on the local relations, their X-ray luminosities and temperatures are low for
their measured velocity dispersions (sigma). The clusters are cooler by a
factor of 2 - 9 compared to the local sigma-T relation. We briefly discuss the

Radio Variability of Sagittarius A* - A 106 Day Cycle
We report the presence of a 106-day cycle in the radio variability of Sgr A*
based on an analysis of data observed with the Very Large Array (VLA) over the
past 20 years. The pulsed signal is most clearly seen at 1.3 cm with a ratio of
cycle frequency to frequency width f/Delta_f= 2.2+/-0.3. The periodic signal is
also clearly observed at 2 cm. At 3.6 cm the detection of a periodic signal is
marginal. No significant periodicity is detected at both 6 and 20 cm. Since the
sampling function is irregular we performed a number of tests to insure that
the observed periodicity is not the result of noise. Similar results were found
for a maximum entropy method and periodogram with CLEAN method. The probability
of false detection for several different noise distributions is less than 5%
based on Monte Carlo tests. The radio properties of the pulsed component at 1.3
cm are spectral index alpha ~ 1.0+/- 0.1 (for S nu^alpha), amplitude Delta
S=0.42 +/- 0.04 Jy and characteristic time scale Delta t_FWHM ~ 25 +/- 5 days.
The lack of VLBI detection of a secondary component suggests that the
variability occurs within Sgr A* on a scale of ~5 AU, suggesting an instability

Colors, magnitudes and velocity dispersions in early-type galaxies: Implications for galaxy ages and metallicities
We present an analysis of the color-magnitude-velocity dispersion relation
for a sample of 39320 early-type galaxies within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey.
We demonstrate that the color-magnitude relation is entirely a consequence of
the fact that both the luminosities and colors of these galaxies are correlated
with stellar velocity dispersions. Previous studies of the color-magnitude
relation over a range of redshifts suggest that the luminosity of an early-type
galaxy is an indicator of its metallicity, whereas residuals in color from the
relation are indicators of the luminosity-weighted age of its stars. We show
that this, when combined with our finding that velocity dispersion plays a
crucial role, has a number of interesting implications. First, galaxies with
large velocity dispersions tend to be older (i.e., they scatter redward of the
color-magnitude relation). Similarly, galaxies with large dynamical mass
estimates also tend to be older. In addition, at fixed luminosity, galaxies
which are smaller, or have larger velocity dispersions, or are more massive,
tend to be older. Second, models in which galaxies with the largest velocity
dispersions are also the most metal poor are difficult to reconcile with our
data. However, at fixed velocity dispersion, galaxies have a range of ages and
metallicities: the older galaxies have smaller metallicities, and vice-versa.
Finally, a plot of velocity dispersion versus luminosity can be used as an age
indicator: lines of constant age run parallel to the correlation between

Bimodal AGNs in Bimodal Galaxies
By their star content, the galaxies split out into a red and a blue
population; their color index peaked around u-r=2.5 or u-r=1, respectively,
quantifies the ratio of the blue stars newly formed from cold galactic gas, to
the redder ones left over by past generations. On the other hand, upon
accreting substantial gas amounts the central massive black holes energize
active galactic nuclei (AGNs); here we investigate whether these show a
similar, and possibly related, bimodal partition as for current accretion
activity relative to the past. To this aim we use an updated semianalytic
model; based on Monte Carlo simulations, this follows with a large statistics
the galaxy assemblage, the star generations and the black hole accretions in
the cosmological framework over the redshift span from z=10 to z=0. We test our
simulations for yielding in close detail the observed split of galaxies into a
red, early and a blue, late population. We find that the black hole accretion
activities likewise give rise to two source populations: early, bright quasars
and later, dimmer AGNs. We predict for their Eddington parameter --
the ratio of the current to the past black hole accretions -- a bimodal
distribution; the two branches sit now under (mainly
contributed by low-luminosity AGNs) and around . These
not only mark out the two populations of AGNs, but also will turn out to

Signatures of Interstellar-Intracluster Medium Interactions: Spiral Galaxy Rotation Curves in Abell 2029
We investigate the rich cluster Abell 2029 (z~0.08) using optical imaging and
long-slit spectral observations of 52 disk galaxies distributed throughout the
cluster field. No strong emission-line galaxies are present within ~400 kpc of
the cluster center, a region largely dominated by the similarly-shaped X-ray
and low surface brightness optical envelopes centered on the giant cD galaxy.
However, two-thirds of the galaxies observed outside the cluster core exhibit
line emission. H-alpha rotation curves of 14 cluster members are used in
conjunction with a deep I band image to study the environmental dependence of
the Tully-Fisher relation. The Tully-Fisher zero-point of Abell 2029 matches
that of clusters at lower redshifts, although we do observe a relatively larger
scatter about the Tully-Fisher relation. We do not observe any systematic
variation in the data with projected distance to the cluster center: we see no
environmental dependence of Tully-Fisher residuals, R-I color, H-alpha
equivalent width, and the shape and extent of the rotation curves.Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables; to appear in the August 2000

The extreme flare in III Zw 2: Evolution of a radio jet in a Seyfert galaxy
A very detailed monitoring of a radio flare in the Seyfert I galaxy III Zw 2
with the VLA and the VLBA is presented. The relative astrometry in the VLBA
observations was precise on a level of a few microarcseconds. Spectral and
spatial evolution of the source are closely linked and these observations
allowed us to study in great detail a textbook example of a synchrotron
self-absorbed jet. We observe a phase where the jet gets frustrated, without
expansion and no spectral evolution. Then the jet breaks free and starts to
expand with apparent superluminal motion. This expansion is accompanied by a
strong spectral evolution. The results are a good confirmation of synchrotron
