    BGS Sigma 2012 open source user guide

    The British Geological Survey began developing digital field mapping systems in 1989. However, it was apparent that the commercially available hardware was not suitable at that time. In 2001, we revisited the topic under the System for Integrated Geoscience Mapping (SIGMA) programme. By 2003, BGS had developed a PDA (personal digital assistant) field system, which was superseded in 2005, when we began deploying a beta system on rugged Tablet PCs. The Tablet PC system, which we called BGS•SIGMAmobile was used by BGS in mapping projects across the UK as well as overseas. It first became available in Open Source form, in June 2009 via the BGS website, www.bgs.ac.uk, under an agreement which stipulates that updates and modifications must be supplied to BGS in order to stimulate further developments. In 2011/2012, BGS•SIGMAmobile was rewritten in .NET and combined with our office based mapping software BGS•SIGMAdesktop within ArcGIS 10.x to create BGS•SIGMA 2012. It is envisaged that future releases will be made available from the BGS website incorporating new modules, modifications and upgrades supplied by BGS and external users of the system. This document has been written to guide users through the installation and use of BGS•SIGMA 2012 (mobile and desktop), which is the third free release.     Metal-Ligand Cooperative Catalysis and Methods for Metal Removal from Organic Transformations

    Organometallic catalysis has revolutionized the synthesis of complex organic molecules. Methods for C-C, C-X and C-H bond formation and cleavage are exploited throughout the areas of fine chemicals synthesis, with major applications for pharmaceuticals. This situation raises duel challenges: 1) high-performance catalysts for environmentally and economically sustainable synthesis and 2) efficient methods of catalyst (i.e. metal) removal must be identified. This work tackles both of these areas. The highly tunable cooperative PR2NR\u272 ligands have been implemented for the first time for catalytic organic transformations. I show that [Ru(Cp)(PtBu2NBn2)(MeCN)][PF6] is an effective catalyst for the cyclization of alkynyl alcohols and have characterized a deactivated species, [Ru(Cp)(PtBu2NBn2)(-C=CHPh)][PF6], from the attempted hydration of alkynes. Directions in metal removal from catalytic reactions have been investigated, using both a solid-supported catalyst and an insoluble metal scavenger

    Weed competition reduces stand establishment, thus lowering forage production and quality. However, there are no herbicides labelled for annual legume establishment, despite several labelled for the establishment of lucerne (Medicago sativa). Some of these may be useful in the establishment and production of annual forage legumes. Lucerne herbicides have greater potential for use on other legumes, since they have grazing and feeding clearance.     Interprofessional collaboration between educational psychologists and speech and language therapists in the UK: facilitators and barriers

    In the UK, speech and language therapists (SLTs) and educational psychologists (EPs) are professionals who support children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN). Legislative and socio-economic changes within the UK and continuing concern about poor outcomes for children with SLCN provided the impetus for a focus on interprofessional collaboration between these two groups. An online survey was distributed to qualified EPs and SLTs in the UK enquiring about facilitators and barriers to collaboration. Responses from 125 EPs and 182 SLTs were content analysed. Responses indicated that communication and working environments were key factors impacting interprofessional collaboration. Relationships and commitment to joint working were also cited as facilitators. Challenges related to reduced resourcing, staffing and changes to working environments as a result of austerity. A framework illustrating possible inter-relationships between factors is presented, indicating hypothesised pathways that could underpin planning for development and change. In summary, despite positive moves towards shared policy and guidance for children with SLCN, findings suggest that a continued focus on maximising effective interprofessional collaboration is crucial to ensure that assessment and early intervention are available to support children with speech, language and communication needs

    Substrate-Mediated Deactivation of a Ru(P\u3csup\u3et\u3c/sup\u3e\u3csup\u3eBu\u3c/sup\u3e2N\u3csup\u3eBn\u3c/sup\u3e2) Cooperative Complex

    Ligand design for metal-ligand cooperative (MLC) catalysis is inherently more complex than that for traditional non-cooperative ligands. The basicity, sterics and structure of the acid/base group in MLC proton-transfer (PT) complexes, for instance, undoubtedly influence catalyst performance. Herein, we evaluate the highly tunable PR2NR′2 (1,5-R′-3,7-R-1,5-diaza-3,7-diphosphacyclooctane) ligand family for the first time in an organic transformation. With [Ru(Cp)(PtBu2NBn2)(MeCN)][PF6] as the catalyst, no turnover was observed in the anti-Markovnikov hydration of alkynes, a known PT MLC reaction. Treatment of the cooperative complex with phenylacetylene affords a vinylammonium product in which the pendant nitrogen atom of the PtBu2NBn2 ligand forms a Lewis acid-base adduct with the alpha-carbon atom of the vinylidene intermediate. Characterization by X-ray crystallography and NMR spectroscopy conclusively assign this structure in both the solid and the solution state. The adduct formation is irreversible, and the adduct is characterized as a catalyst deactivation product. Snapping Shut: The PR2NR′2 ligand family (R and R′ are removed for clarity in the graphic) open the door for easily tuned catalysts for cooperative organic transformations. However, the ligand swings toward the vinylidene, forming a stable (and catalytically inactive) Lewis acid-base adduct. (□ = open coordination site
