On the active deformations of hybrid specimens
Purpose
– The purpose of this study concerns numerical studies and experimental validation of the mechanical behavior of hybrid specimens. These kinds of composite specimens are made up of thin carbon and glass substrates on which some Macro Fiber Composite ® (MFC) piezoelectric patches are glued. A proper design and manufacturing of the hybrid specimens as well as testing activities have been performed. The research activity has
been carried out under the FutureWings project, funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework.
Design/methodology/approach
– The paper describes the basic assumptions made to define specimen geometries and to carry out experimental
tests. Finite element (FE) results and experimental data (laser technique measurements) have been compared: it shows very good agreement for the displacements’ distribution along the specimens.
Findings
– Within the objectives of the project, the study of passive and active deformation characteristics of the hybrid composite material has provided reference technical data and has allowed for the correct adaptation of the FE models. More in particular, using the hybrid specimens, both the bending deformations and the torsion deformations have been studied.
Practical implications
– The deformation capability of the hybrid specimens will be used in the development of prototypical three-dimensional structures, that, through the electrical control of the MFC patches, will be able to change the curvature of their cross section or will be able to change the angle of torsion along their longitudinal axis.
Originality/value
– The design of nonstandard specimens and the tests executed represent a novelty in the field of structures using piezoelectric actuators. The numerical and experimental data of the present research constitute a small step forward in the field of smart materials technology
Hybrid HMM/SVM Model for the Analysis and Segmentation of Teleoperation Tasks
Abslracr-The automatic execution of a~complex task requires the identification of an underlying mental model to derive a possible task control sequence. The model aims at analysing and segmenting.the-(ask in simpler sub-lasks. As an example of a complex psk, in this paper we consider telwperation where a person commands a emote robot. This paper presents a new modeling approach using Hidden Markov Models (HMM) and Support Vector Machines (SVM) to analyse. the fokdtorqne signals of a telwperation task. The task is divided into simpler sub-tasks and the model is used, to segment the signals in each sub-task. The segmentation gives ~infonnations on the system behavior identifying the changes of the model states. Peg in Hole forcdtorque data %e used for testing the model. The results are consistent with the ' literature with respect to off-line analysis, whereas a significant increase of performance is achieved for on-line analysis..-. I
Therapeutic Approaches in Adult Primary Spinal Cord Astrocytoma: A Systematic Review
The issue: Gliomas are primary tumors arising from supporting cells of the central nervous system (CNS), usually in the brain. The 2021 World Health Organization (WHO) classifies gliomas as adult-type diffuse gliomas or circumscribed astrocytic gliomas depending on their histology and molecular features. Spinal astrocytic gliomas are very rare, and nowadays no standard of therapy is available. Treatment options are limited: surgery is often not radical, and adjuvant therapies include mostly radiotherapy (RT) or systemic chemotherapy (CHT). There is lack of knowledge about the efficacy and safety of therapies and their multidisciplinary approaches. The aim of the review: A systematic review of the literature from January 2000 to June 2021 was performed, including both clinical trials and observational studies on histological adult primary spinal cord astrocytomas (SCA), with a minimum follow-up of 6 months and reporting the overall survival, progression-free survival or clinical neurological outcome after any therapeutic approach (surgery, RT or CHT). What are the main findings? A total of 1197 citations were identified by the Medline search and additional records; based on our inclusion criteria, 18 studies were included with a total of 285 adult patients. We documented the lack of any clinical trial. What are the conclusions? The available literature data are limited to series/retrospective studies, including heterogeneous patients, i.e., astrocytoma as well as ependymoma or pediatric/adult age, with scanty data on the outcomes of interest. No clinical trials have been run. Due to the rarity of this disease, multicentric clinical trials with molecular investigations are mandatory to better manage such a rare disease
The Role of Docosahexaenoic Acid (DHA) on Cognitive Functions in Psychiatric Disorders
Cognitive impairment is strongly associated with functional outcomes in psychiatric patients. Involvement of n-3 long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (n-3 LC-PUFA), in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), in brain functions is largely documented. DHA is incorporated into membrane phospholipids as structural component, especially in the central nervous system where it also has important functional effects. The aim of this review is to investigate the relationship between DHA and cognitive function in relation to mental disorders. Results from few randomized controlled trials (RCTs) on the effects of DHA (alone or in combination) in psychotic, mood and neurodevelopmental disorders, respectively, suggest that no conclusive remarks can be drawn
