Born reciprocity and the 1/r potential
Many structures in nature are invariant under the transformation
(p,r)->(br,-p/b), where b is some scale factor. Born's reciprocity hypothesis
affirms that this invariance extends to the entire Hamiltonian and equations of
motion. We investigate this idea for atomic physics and galactic motion, where
one is basically dealing with a 1/r potential and the observations are very
accurate, so as to determine the scale . We find that an Hz has essentially no effect on atomic physics but
might possibly offer an explanation for galactic rotation, without invoking
dark matter.Comment: 14 pages, with 4 figures, Latex, requires epsf.tex and iop style

Integral equation method for the electromagnetic wave propagation in stratified anisotropic dielectric-magnetic materials
We investigate the propagation of electromagnetic waves in stratified
anisotropic dielectric-magnetic materials using the integral equation method
(IEM). Based on the superposition principle, we use Hertz vector formulations
of radiated fields to study the interaction of wave with matter. We derive in a
new way the dispersion relation, Snell's law and reflection/transmission
coefficients by self-consistent analyses. Moreover, we find two new forms of
the generalized extinction theorem. Applying the IEM, we investigate the wave
propagation through a slab and disclose the underlying physics which are
further verified by numerical simulations. The results lead to a unified
framework of the IEM for the propagation of wave incident either from a medium
or vacuum in stratified dielectric-magnetic materials.Comment: 14pages, 3figure
Regular (2+1)-dimensional black holes within non-linear Electrodynamics
(2+1)-regular static black hole solutions with a nonlinear electric field are
derived. The source to the Einstein equations is an energy momentum tensor of
nonlinear electrodynamics, which satisfies the weak energy conditions and in
the weak field limit becomes the (2+1)-Maxwell field tensor. The derived class
of solutions is regular; the metric, curvature invariants and electric field
are regular everywhere. The metric becomes, for a vanishing parameter, the
(2+1)-static charged BTZ solution. A general procedure to derive solutions for
the static BTZ (2+1)-spacetime, for any nonlinear Lagrangian depending on the
electric field is formulated; for relevant electric fields one requires the
fulfillment of the weak energy conditions.Comment: 5 pages, Latex, 2 figure
Scenario of Accelerating Universe from the Phenomenological \Lambda- Models
Dark matter, the major component of the matter content of the Universe,
played a significant role at early stages during structure formation. But at
present the Universe is dark energy dominated as well as accelerating. Here,
the presence of dark energy has been established by including a time-dependent
term in the Einstein's field equations. This model is compatible with
the idea of an accelerating Universe so far as the value of the deceleration
parameter is concerned. Possibility of a change in sign of the deceleration
parameter is also discussed. The impact of considering the speed of light as
variable in the field equations has also been investigated by using a well
known time-dependent model.Comment: Latex, 9 pages, Major change
Supergravity Solutions for BI Dyons
We construct partially localized supergravity counterpart solutions to the
1/2 supersymmetric non-threshold and the 1/4 supersymmetric threshold bound
state BI dyons in the D3-brane Dirac-Born-Infeld theory. Such supergravity
solutions have all the parameters of the BI dyons. By applying the IIA/IIB
T-duality transformations to these supergravity solutions, we obtain the
supergravity counterpart solutions to 1/2 and 1/4 supersymmetric BIons carrying
electric and magnetic charges of the worldvolume U(1) gauge field in the
Dirac-Born-Infeld theory in other dimensions.Comment: 17 pages, REVTeX, revised version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Aspects of electrostatics in a weak gravitational field
Several features of electrostatics of point charged particles in a weak,
homogeneous, gravitational field are discussed using the Rindler metric to
model the gravitational field. Some previously known results are obtained by
simpler and more transparent procedures and are interpreted in an intuitive
manner. Specifically: (i) We show that the electrostatic potential of a charge
at rest in the Rindler frame is expressible as A_0=(q/l) where l is the affine
parameter distance along the null geodesic from the charge to the field point.
(ii) We obtain the sum of the electrostatic forces exerted by one charge on
another in the Rindler frame and discuss its interpretation. (iii) We show how
a purely electrostatic term in the Rindler frame appears as a radiation term in
the inertial frame. (In part, this arises because charges at rest in a weak
gravitational field possess additional weight due to their electrostatic
energy. This weight is proportional to the acceleration and falls inversely
with distance -- which are the usual characteristics of a radiation field.)
(iv) We also interpret the origin of the radiation reaction term by extending
our approach to include a slowly varying acceleration. Many of these results
might have possible extensions for the case of electrostatics in an arbitrary
static geometry. [Abridged Abstract]Comment: 26 pages; accepted for publication in Gen.Rel.Gra
Blackbody Radiation and the Scaling Symmetry of Relativistic Classical Electron Theory with Classical Electromagnetic Zero-Point Radiation
It is pointed out that relativistic classical electron theory with classical
electromagnetic zero-point radiation has a scaling symmetry which is suitable
for understanding the equilibrium behavior of classical thermal radiation at a
spectrum other than the Rayleigh-Jeans spectrum. In relativistic classical
electron theory, the masses of the particles are the only scale-giving
parameters associated with mechanics while the action-angle variables are scale
invariant. The theory thus separates the interaction of the action variables of
matter and radiation from the scale-giving parameters. Classical zero-point
radiation is invariant under scattering by the charged particles of
relativistic classical electron theory. The basic ideas of the matter
-radiation interaction are illustrated in a simple relativistic classical
electromagnetic example.Comment: 18 page
On a universal photonic tunnelling time
We consider photonic tunnelling through evanescent regions and obtain general
analytic expressions for the transit (phase) time (in the opaque barrier
limit) in order to study the recently proposed ``universality'' property
according to which is given by the reciprocal of the photon frequency.
We consider different physical phenomena (corresponding to performed
experiments) and show that such a property is only an approximation. In
particular we find that the ``correction'' factor is a constant term for total
internal reflection and quarter-wave photonic bandgap, while it is
frequency-dependent in the case of undersized waveguide and distributed Bragg
reflector. The comparison of our predictions with the experimental results
shows quite a good agreement with observations and reveals the range of
applicability of the approximated ``universality'' property.Comment: RevTeX, 8 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; subsection added with a new

Rotating Black Branes in the presence of nonlinear electromagnetic field
In this paper, we consider a class of gravity whose action represents itself
as a sum of the usual Einstein-Hilbert action with cosmological constant and an
gauge field for which the action is given by a power of the Maxwell
invariant. We present a class of the rotating black branes with Ricci flat
horizon and show that the presented solutions may be interpreted as black brane
solutions with two event horizons, extreme black hole and naked singularity
provided the parameters of the solutions are chosen suitably. We investigate
the properties of the solutions and find that for the special values of the
nonlinear parameter, the solutions are not asymptotically anti-deSitter. At
last, we obtain the conserved quantities of the rotating black branes and find
that the nonlinear source effects on the electric field, the behavior of
spacetime, type of singularity and other quantities.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, to appear in EPJ
Strongly focused light beams interacting with single atoms in free space
We construct 3-D solutions of Maxwell's equations that describe Gaussian
light beams focused by a strong lens. We investigate the interaction of such
beams with single atoms in free space and the interplay between angular and
quantum properties of the scattered radiation. We compare the exact results
with those obtained with paraxial light beams and from a standard input-output
formalism. We put our results in the context of quantum information processing
with single atoms.Comment: 9 pages, 9 figure
