    Die Schweinegrippe in den Medien : Analyse der Berichterstattung am Beispiel der FAZ, der BILD und des Nachrichtenmagazins SPIEGEL

    Die Bachelorarbeit beschäftigt sich mit der Medienberichterstattung über die Schweinegrippe im Jahr 2009. Ziel der Arbeit ist es die Zeitungsberichte der 3 ausgewählten Medien inhaltlich zu analysieren und festzustellen, wie die Medien über dieses Ereignis berichten und in wiefern sich die Untersuchungsobjekte in der Berichterstattung gleichen. Einführend wird ein Überblick über die Nachrichtenfaktoren, die Risikokommunikation, die journalistische Qualität, die neue Grippe, deren Gefährdungspotential und die untersuchten Medien gegeben. Aufgestellte Hypothesen werden nach Durchführung der Inhaltsanalyse bestätigt oder widerlegt werden. Es werden Unterschiede und Gemeinsamkeiten in der Berichterstattung aufgezeigt werden

    A Comparative Study on the Flocculation of Silica and China Clay with Chitosan and Synthetic Polyelectrolytes

    Flocculation is still one of the most important and efficient processes for water treatment. However, most industrial processes, such as in water treatment plants, still use huge amounts of synthetic polyelectrolytes for the flocculation process. Here we compare the flocculation of two different suspended particles, i.e., silica particles and china clay, with the biopolymer chitosan and two common strong synthetic polyelectrolytes. As a flocculant, chitosan featured a minimum uptake rate of 0.05 mg/g for silica and 1.8 mg/g for china clay. Polydiallyldimethylammonium chloride (PDADMAC) for comparison possessed a minimum uptake rate of 0.05 mg/g for silica and 2.2 mg/g for china clay. Chitosan as an environmentally friendly biopolymer competes with the synthetic polyelectrolytes and thus represents a beneficial economic alternative to synthetic flocculants

    Incidence, prevalence, and comorbidities of juvenile idiopathic arthritis in Germany: a retrospective observational cohort health claims database study

    Background Juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) describes heterogenous categories of chronic inflammatory rheumatic conditions of unknown origin in children and adolescents. Epidemiological data in the literature vary, depending on geographic location, ethnicity and the case definition used. We evaluated epidemiology, especially that of the categories defined by the International League of Associations for Rheumatology (ILAR). Methods Using data from two different longitudinal health claims databases (WIG2 and InGef) from January 1(st), 2013 to December 31(st), 2019, we looked at patients aged 2 to 15 years old with at least one main inpatient or two secondary inpatient/verified outpatient ICD-10 diagnoses in at least two different quarters within one calendar year. We calculated prevalence and incidence (per 100,000 patients) and extrapolated data to the entire German population, looking at differences in gender and age groups. Additionally, we collected data on other not necessary comorbidities in our JIA patient population. Results Of the 3-4 million patients in the databases (respectively) in 2018, we found a total of 546 (WIG2) and 849 (InGef) patients that met our JIA case definition, with an incidence of 34 (29-41) and 60 (53-67) and prevalence of 133 (122-145) and 168 (157-179). Both incidence and prevalence throughout the age range were mostly higher in females than males, however the difference between females and males increased with increasing age. Of the ILAR categories, oligoarthritis was the most prevalent (70 and 91 per 100,000), with about half of our JIA patients in this category, followed by undifferentiated arthritis (49 and 56 cases per 100,000) and rheumatoid factor negative (RF-) (31 and 39 per 100,000). Incidence in 2018 was the highest in these three categories. Atopic dermatitis, vasomotor and allergic rhinitis, and uveitis were the pre-defined comorbidities seen most often in both databases. Conclusion This study provides current incidence and prevalence JIA data in Germany, contributing to knowledge on burden of disease and tools for healthcare planning

    Native and Oxidized Starch for Adsorption of Nickel, Iron, and Manganese Ions from Water

    The adsorption of heavy metal ions from surface water with ecologically safe and biodegradable biopolymers is increasingly becoming an appealing research challenge. Starch as a biopolymer is exceptionally attractive to solve this problem for its low cost and abundant availability in nature. To expel Ni2+, Fe2+/3+, and Mn2+ from water, we analyzed two native and two oxidized starches, namely potato and corn starch, as bio-adsorbers. The morphology and the surface property of the different starches were studied using SEM. To assess the effectiveness of adsorption onto the starches, we tested three realistic concentrations based on German drinking water ordinance values that were 10-fold, 100-fold, and 1000-fold the limits for Mn2+, Fe2+, and Ni2+, respectively. The concentration of the different ions was measured using the ICP-OES. Furthermore, from subsequent investigations of the adsorption isotherms, we evaluated the adsorption capacities and mechanisms. The adsorption isotherms were fitted using the Langmuir, Sips, and Dubinin–Radushkevich models, whereby Sips showed the highest correlation. Oxidized potato starch achieved viable adsorption capacities of 77 µmol Fe2+/g, 84 µmol Mn2+/g, and 118 µmol Ni2+/g. Investigating the influence of initial swelling in water on the adsorption performance, we found that especially the percentage removal with oxidized starches decreased significantly due to the formation of hydrogen bonds with water molecules at their binding sites with prior swelling

    Male Subfertility Induced by Heterozygous Expression of Catalytically Inactive Glutathione Peroxidase 4 Is Rescued in Vivo by Systemic Inactivation of the Alox15 Gene

    Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and arachidonic acid 15-lipoxygenase (ALOX15) are antagonizing enzymes in the metabolism of hydroperoxy lipids. In spermatoid cells and/or in the male reproductive system both enzymes are apparently expressed, and GPX4 serves as anti-oxidative enzyme but also as a structural protein. In this study we explored whether germ line inactivation of the Alox15 gene might rescue male subfertility induced by heterozygous expression of catalytically silent Gpx4. To address this question we employed Gpx4 knock-in mice expressing the Sec46Ala-Gpx4 mutant, in which the catalytic selenocysteine was replaced by a redox inactive alanine. Because homozygous Gpx4 knock-in mice (Sec46Ala-Gpx4+/+) are not viable we created heterozygous animals (Sec46Ala-Gpx4+/-) and crossed them with Alox15 knock-out mice (Alox15-/-). Male Sec46Ala-Gpx4+/- mice, but not their female littermates, were subfertile. Sperm extracted from the epididymal cauda showed strongly impaired motility characteristics and severe structural midpiece alterations (swollen mitochondria, intramitochondrial vacuoles, disordered mitochondrial capsule). Despite these structural alterations, they exhibited similar respiration characteristics than wild-type sperm. When Sec46Ala-Gpx4+/- mice were crossed with Alox15-deficient animals, the resulting males (Sec46Ala-Gpx4+/-+Alox15-/-) showed normalized fertility, and sperm motility was reimproved to wild-type levels. Taken together these data suggest that systemic inactivation of the Alox15 gene normalizes the reduced fertility of male Sec46Ala-Gpx4+/- mice by improving the motility of their sperm. If these data can be confirmed in humans, ALOX15 inhibitors might counteract male infertility related to GPX4 deficiency

    The Helicobacter pylori Anti-Sigma Factor FlgM Is Predominantly Cytoplasmic and Cooperates with the Flagellar Basal Body Protein FlhA ▿ †

    Helicobacter pylori requires flagellar motility and orientation to persist actively in its habitat. A particular feature of flagella in most Helicobacter species including H. pylori is a membraneous flagellar sheath. The anti-sigma factor FlgM of H. pylori is unusual, since it lacks an N-terminal domain present in other FlgM homologs, e.g., FlgM of Salmonella spp., whose regulatory function is intimately coupled to its secretion through the flagellar type III secretion system. The aim of the present study was to characterize the localization and secretion of the short H. pylori FlgM in the presence of a flagellar sheath and to elucidate its interaction with other flagellar proteins, such as the basal body protein FlhA, which was previously shown to cooperate with FlgM for regulation. H. pylori FlgM was only released into the medium in minor amounts in wild-type bacteria, where the bulk amount of the protein was retained in the cytoplasm. Some FlgM was detected in the flagellar fraction. FlgM was expressed in flhA mutants and was less soluble and differentially localized in bacterial fractions of the flhA mutant in comparison to wild-type bacteria. FlgM-green fluorescent protein and FlgM-V5 translational fusions were generated and expressed in H. pylori. FlgM displayed a predominantly polar distribution and interacted with the C-terminal domain of FlhA (FlhAC). We suggest that, in H. pylori, FlgM secretion may not be paramount for its regulatory function and that protein interactions at the flagellar basal body may determine the turnover and localization of functional FlgM
