The chemistry of protoplanetary fragments formed via gravitational instabilities
In this paper, we model the chemical evolution of a 0.25 M
protoplanetary disc surrounding a 1 M star that undergoes
fragmentation due to self-gravity. We use Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics
including a radiative transfer scheme, along with time-dependent chemical
evolution code to follow the composition of the disc and resulting fragments
over approximately 4000 yrs. Initially, four quasi-stable fragments are formed,
of which two are eventually disrupted by tidal torques in the disc. From the
results of our chemical modelling, we identify species that are abundant in the
fragments (e.g. HO, HS, HNO, N, NH,
OCS, SO), species that are abundant in the spiral shocks within the disc (e.g.
CO, CH, CN, CS, HCO), and species which are abundant in the
circumfragmentary material (e.g. HCO). Our models suggest that in
some fragments it is plausible for grains to sediment to the core before
releasing their volatiles into the planetary envelope, leading to changes in,
e.g., the C/O ratio of the gas and ice components. We would therefore predict
that the atmospheric composition of planets generated by gravitational
instability should not necessarily follow the bulk chemical composition of the
local disc material
The effect of different types of hepatic injury on the estrogen and androgen receptor activity of liver
Mammalian liver contains receptors for both estrogens and androgens. Hepatic regeneration after partial hepatectomy in male rats is associated with a loss of certain male-specific hepatic characteristics. In this study we investigated the effects of lesser forms of hepatic injury on the levels of estrogen and androgen receptor activity in the liver. Adult male rats were subjected to portacaval shunt, partial portal vein ligation, hepatic artery ligation, or two-thirds partial hepatectomy. Another group of animals was treated with cyclosporine. At the time of sacrifice the livers were removed and used to determine the estrogen and androgen receptor activity in the hepatic cytosol. A significant reduction (p < 0.05) in the hepatic cytosolic androgen receptor activity and a slight increase in the estrogen receptor activity occurred following total portosystemic shunting. Partial ligation of the portal vein, which produces a lesser degree of portosystemic shunting, had no effect on the levels of the estrogen and androgen receptor activity present within hepatic cytosol. Cyclosporine-treated animals had significantly greater (p < 0.01) levels of estrogen receptor activity in the hepatic cytosol compared to vehicle-treated control animals. Levels of estrogen and androgen receptor activity within the hepatic cytosol remained unchanged after ligation of the hepatic artery. The reduction in the cytosolic estrogen and androgen receptor activity in the liver after partial hepatectomy was confirmed. In summary, certain types of hepatic injury are associated with profound changes in the estrogen and androgen receptor content within the liver. © 1989 Informa UK Ltd All rights reserved: reproduction in whole or part not permitted
New AdS solitons and brane worlds with compact extra-dimensions
We construct new static, asymptotically AdS solutions where the conformal
infinity is the product of Minkowski spacetime and a sphere . Both
globally regular, soliton-type solutions and black hole solutions are
considered. The black holes can be viewed as natural AdS generalizations of the
Schwarzschild black branes in Kaluza-Klein theory. The solitons provide new
brane-world models with compact extra-dimensions. Different from the
Randall-Sundrum single-brane scenario, a Schwarzschild black hole on the Ricci
flat part of these branes does not lead to a naked singularity in the bulk.Comment: 28 pages, 4 figure
Hanani-Tutte for radial planarity
A drawing of a graph G is radial if the vertices of G are placed on concentric circles C 1 , . . . , C k with common center c , and edges are drawn radially : every edge intersects every circle centered at c at most once. G is radial planar if it has a radial embedding, that is, a crossing-free radial drawing. If the vertices of G are ordered or partitioned into ordered levels (as they are for leveled graphs), we require that the assignment of vertices to circles corresponds to the given ordering or leveling. We show that a graph G is radial planar if G has a radial drawing in which every two edges cross an even number of times; the radial embedding has the same leveling as the radial drawing. In other words, we establish the weak variant of the Hanani-Tutte theorem for radial planarity. This generalizes a result by Pach and Toth
Nitrogen uptake and internal recycling in Zostera marina exposed to oyster farming: eelgrass potential as a natural biofilter
Oyster farming in estuaries and coastal lagoons frequently overlaps with the distribution of seagrass meadows, yet there are few studies on how this aquaculture practice affects seagrass physiology. We compared in situ nitrogen uptake and the productivity of Zostera marina shoots growing near off-bottom longlines and at a site not affected by oyster farming in San Quintin Bay, a coastal lagoon in Baja California, Mexico. We used benthic chambers to measure leaf NH4 (+) uptake capacities by pulse labeling with (NH4)-N-15 (+) and plant photosynthesis and respiration. The internal N-15 resorption/recycling was measured in shoots 2 weeks after incubations. The natural isotopic composition of eelgrass tissues and vegetative descriptors were also examined. Plants growing at the oyster farming site showed a higher leaf NH4 (+) uptake rate (33.1 mmol NH4 (+) m(-2) day(-1)) relative to those not exposed to oyster cultures (25.6 mmol NH4 (+) m(-2) day(-1)). We calculated that an eelgrass meadow of 15-16 ha (which represents only about 3-4 % of the subtidal eelgrass meadow cover in the western arm of the lagoon) can potentially incorporate the total amount of NH4 (+) excreted by oysters (similar to 5.2 x 10(6) mmol NH4 (+) day(-1)). This highlights the potential of eelgrass to act as a natural biofilter for the NH4 (+) produced by oyster farming. Shoots exposed to oysters were more efficient in re-utilizing the internal N-15 into the growth of new leaf tissues or to translocate it to belowground tissues. Photosynthetic rates were greater in shoots exposed to oysters, which is consistent with higher NH4 (+) uptake and less negative delta C-13 values. Vegetative production (shoot size, leaf growth) was also higher in these shoots. Aboveground/belowground biomass ratio was lower in eelgrass beds not directly influenced by oyster farms, likely related to the higher investment in belowground biomass to incorporate sedimentary nutrients
Improved Weighted Random Forest for Classification Problems
Several studies have shown that combining machine learning models in an
appropriate way will introduce improvements in the individual predictions made
by the base models. The key to make well-performing ensemble model is in the
diversity of the base models. Of the most common solutions for introducing
diversity into the decision trees are bagging and random forest. Bagging
enhances the diversity by sampling with replacement and generating many
training data sets, while random forest adds selecting a random number of
features as well. This has made the random forest a winning candidate for many
machine learning applications. However, assuming equal weights for all base
decision trees does not seem reasonable as the randomization of sampling and
input feature selection may lead to different levels of decision-making
abilities across base decision trees. Therefore, we propose several algorithms
that intend to modify the weighting strategy of regular random forest and
consequently make better predictions. The designed weighting frameworks include
optimal weighted random forest based on ac-curacy, optimal weighted random
forest based on the area under the curve (AUC), performance-based weighted
random forest, and several stacking-based weighted random forest models. The
numerical results show that the proposed models are able to introduce
significant improvements compared to regular random forest
Factors associated with nosocomial SARS-CoV transmission among healthcare workers in Hanoi, Vietnam, 2003
BACKGROUND: In March of 2003, an outbreak of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) occurred in Northern Vietnam. This outbreak began when a traveler arriving from Hong Kong sought medical care at a small hospital (Hospital A) in Hanoi, initiating a serious and substantial transmission event within the hospital, and subsequent limited spread within the community. METHODS: We surveyed Hospital A personnel for exposure to the index patient and for symptoms of disease during the outbreak. Additionally, serum specimens were collected and assayed for antibody to SARS-associated coronavirus (SARS-CoV) antibody and job-specific attack rates were calculated. A nested case-control analysis was performed to assess risk factors for acquiring SARS-CoV infection. RESULTS: One hundred and fifty-three of 193 (79.3%) clinical and non-clinical staff consented to participate. Excluding job categories with <3 workers, the highest SARS attack rates occurred among nurses who worked in the outpatient and inpatient general wards (57.1, 47.4%, respectively). Nurses assigned to the operating room/intensive care unit, experienced the lowest attack rates (7.1%) among all clinical staff. Serologic evidence of SARS-CoV infection was detected in 4 individuals, including 2 non-clinical workers, who had not previously been identified as SARS cases; none reported having had fever or cough. Entering the index patient's room and having seen (viewed) the patient were the behaviors associated with highest risk for infection by univariate analysis (odds ratios 20.0, 14.0; 95% confidence intervals 4.1–97.1, 3.6–55.3, respectively). CONCLUSION: This study highlights job categories and activities associated with increased risk for SARS-CoV infection and demonstrates that a broad diversity of hospital workers may be vulnerable during an outbreak. These findings may help guide recommendations for the protection of vulnerable occupational groups and may have implications for other respiratory infections such as influenza
