    Spectroscopy of B_c Mesons in the Relativized Quark Model

    We calculate the spectrum of the charm-beauty mesons using the relativized quark model. Using the wavefunctions from this model we compute the radiative widths of excited c\bar{b} states. The hadronic transition rates between c\bar{b} states are estimated using the Kuang-Yan approach and are combined with the radiative widths to give estimates of the relative branching ratios. These results are combined with production rates at the Tevatron and the LHC to suggest promising signals for excited B_c states. Our results are compared with other models to gauge the reliability of the predictions and point out differences.Comment: 15 pages, 1 fig. uses revtex4. References adde

    Measurement of the Ï„-lepton Lifetime at Belle

    The lifetime of the τ lepton is measured using the process e+e−→τ+τ−, where both τ leptons decay to 3πντ. The result for the mean lifetime, based on 711  fb−1 of data collected with the Belle detector at the ϒ(4S) resonance and 60  MeV below, is τ=(290.17±0.53(stat)±0.33(syst))×10−15  s. The first measurement of the lifetime difference betweenτ+ and τ− is performed. The upper limit on the relative lifetime difference between positive and negative τ leptons is |Δτ|/τ\u3c7.0×10−3 at 90% C.L

    Measurement of CP Violation at the Υ(4S)\Upsilon(4S) without Time Ordering or Δt\Delta t

    I derive the expressions for the CP-violating asymmetry arising from interference between mixed and direct decays in the Upsilon(4S) system, for the case in which only one of the B decay times is observed, integrating over the decay time of the other B. I observe that neither the difference of the decay times Delta t, nor even their time-ordering, need be detected. A technique for measurement of the CP-violating weak decay parameter sin(2beta) is described which exploits this observation.Comment: 9 pages postscript, also available through http://w4.lns.cornell.edu/public/CLN

    Correlative Scanning Electron Microscopy in the Study of Human Gastric Mucosa

    We studied two aspects of the human gastric mucosa: - the surface morphology of mucous cells, as viewed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM); - the glycosidic components of intracellular mucins, characterized by means of lectins. The latter were conjugated with fluorescein isothiocyanate and with colloidal gold-silver for the visualization of the reaction products in light microscopy (LM) and in SEM (backscattered mode) respectively. The surface morphology of mucous cells appears to be correlated to the secretory state.In gastric ulcers we found a prevalence of non-secreting cells. A decrease in glycosidic receptors for fucose-binding lectin and galactose-(l-3)-N-acetyl-galactosamine-binding lectin was also observed. This suggests the presence of an impaired mucus secretion which may play a role in the pathogenesis of gastric ulcer. Spiral bacteria, supposed to be aetiologically related to peptic ulcer and gastritis, were easily detected by SEM. Intestinal metaplasia defined complete in LM showed surface morphology and glycosidic components different from those of true intestinal mucosa. This implies the necessity of taking into account also these parameters when classifying this lesion. The same applies to polyps. Our data indicate that correlative SEM may contribute further information on the pathogenesis and pathology of gastric diseases

    Importance of Tests for the Complete Lorentz Structure of the t --> W+ b vertex at Hadron Colliders

    The most general Lorentz-invariant decay-density-matrix for t→W+b→(l+ν)bt\to W^{+}b\to (l^{+}\nu)b, or for t→W+b→(jdˉju)bt\to W^{+}b\to (j_{\bar d}j_u)b, is expressed in terms of eight helicity parameters. The parameters are physically defined in terms of partial-width-intensities for polarized-final-states in t→W+bt\to W^{+}b decay. The parameters are the partial width, the bb quark's chirality parameter ξ\xi, the W+W^+ polarimetry parameter σ\sigma, a "pre-SSB" test parameter ζ\zeta, and four WLW_{L}-WTW_{T} interference parameters η\eta, η′\eta^{'}, ω\omega, ω′\omega^{'} which test for T~FS\tilde T_{FS} violation. They can be used to test for non-CKM-type CP violation, anomalous ΓL,T\Gamma_{L,T}'s, top weak magnetism, weak electricity, and second-class currents. By stage-two spin-correlation techniques, percent level statistical uncertainites are typical for measurements at the Tevatron, and several mill level uncertainites are typical at the LHC.Comment: Minor clarifications.     Clinical Applications of Scanning Electron Microscopy in Gastrointestinal Diseases

    We considered the role of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) in clinical investigation of different gastrointestinal diseases. The following clinical applications of SEM may be suggested on the basis of our original data and those reported in literature: in peptic ulcer: assessment of the completeness of healing, by observing the mucosal surface architecture of the scars; identification of mucosal changes, namely enterocytic surface membrane alterations, predictive of recurrence; in coeliac disease: early assessment of the response to gluten-free diet and follow-up of the patients by staging the process of mucosal repair in cerebriform, intermediate and villous patterns; in ulcerative and Crohn\u27s colitis: enhancement of the diagnostic sensitivity of perendoscopic biopsy, by detecting differences in surface structure of mucosa surrounding ulcers in both diseases. This is subverted in ulcerative colitis and preserved in Crohn\u27s colitis. Finally the complementary role of SEM in relation to endoscopy and light microscopy is emphasized

    Neutrinos in a spherical box

    In the present paper we study some neutrino properties as they may appear in the low energy neutrinos emitted in triton decay with maximum neutrino energy of 18.6 keV. The technical challenges to this end can be achieved by building a very large TPC capable of detecting low energy recoils, down to a a few tenths of a keV, within the required low background constraints. More specifically We propose the development of a spherical gaseous TPC of about 10-m in radius and a 200 Mcurie triton source in the center of curvature. One can list a number of exciting studies, concerning fundamental physics issues, that could be made using a large volume TPC and low energy antineutrinos: 1) The oscillation length involving the small angle of the neutrino mixing matrix, directly measured in this disappearance experiment, is fully contained inside the detector. Measuring the counting rate of neutrino-electron elastic scattering as a function of the distance of the source will give a precise and unambiguous measurement of the oscillation parameters free of systematic errors. In fact first estimates show that even with a year's data taking a sensitivity of a few percent for the measurement of the above angle will be achieved. 2) The low energy detection threshold offers a unique sensitivity for the neutrino magnetic moment which is about two orders of magnitude beyond the current experimental limit. 3) Scattering at such low neutrino energies has never been studied and any departure from the expected behavior may be an indication of new physics beyond the standard model.     Optimized Variables of the Study of Λb\Lambda_b Polarization

    The value of the bb-baryon polarization can be extracted from inclusive data at LEP with better than 10\% precision based on current statistics. We present a new variable by which to measure the polarization, which is the ratio of the average electron energy to the average neutrino energy.
