    Relações de bromélias epifíticas com características dos forófitos em diferentes estádios sucessionais da floresta ombrófila densa, Santa Catarina, Brasil.

    O presente estudo teve o objetivo de caracterizar a ocorrência de bromélias epifíticas em quatro estádios sucessionais (capoeirinha, capoeira, capoeirão e floresta secundária) da Floresta Ombrófila Densa em encostas da Ilha de Santa Catarina, Santa Catarina, Brasil. As bromélias foram classificadas em grupos de ocorrência ampla e restrita de acordo com a amplitude de sua distribuição. Os forófitos foram selecionados através do método de pontos quadrantes, e suas características foram analisadas em associação com o número de espécies de bromélias, através da análise multivariada. Foram registradas cinco espécies de bromélias na capoeira, oito no capoeirão e onze na floresta secundária. A similaridade foi maior entre o capoeirão e a floresta secundária, com trocas e substituições de espécies e gêneros nos sucessivos estádios de regeneração da floresta. As bromélias apresentaram correlações diretas com a altura total dos forófitos, indicando que o tempo é um fator importante na colonização de bromélias epifíticas

    Hadron Properties with FLIC Fermions

    The Fat-Link Irrelevant Clover (FLIC) fermion action provides a new form of nonperturbative O(a)-improvement in lattice fermion actions offering near continuum results at finite lattice spacing. It provides computationally inexpensive access to the light quark mass regime of QCD where chiral nonanalytic behaviour associated with Goldstone bosons is revealed.     Shapes and Shears, Stars and Smears: Optimal Measurements for Weak Lensing

    We present the theoretical and analytical bases of optimal techniques to measure weak gravitational shear from images of galaxies. We first characterize the geometric space of shears and ellipticity, then use this geometric interpretation to analyse images. The steps of this analysis include: measurement of object shapes on images, combining measurements of a given galaxy on different images, estimating the underlying shear from an ensemble of galaxy shapes, and compensating for the systematic effects of image distortion, bias from PSF asymmetries, and `"dilution" of the signal by the seeing. These methods minimize the ellipticity measurement noise, provide calculable shear uncertainty estimates, and allow removal of systematic contamination by PSF effects to arbitrary precision. Galaxy images and PSFs are decomposed into a family of orthogonal 2d Gaussian-based functions, making the PSF correction and shape measurement relatively straightforward and computationally efficient. We also discuss sources of noise-induced bias in weak lensing measurements and provide a solution for these and previously identified biases.Comment: Version accepted to AJ.     On the nature of the hard X-ray sources SWIFTJ1907.3-2050, IGRJ12123-5802 and IGRJ19552+0044

    The INTEGRAL and Swift hard X-ray surveys have identified a large number of new sources, among which many are proposed as Cataclysmic Variables (CVs). Here we present the first detailed study of three X-ray selected CVs, Swift J1907.3-2050, IGRJ12123-5802, and IGRJ19552+0044 based on XMM-Newton, Suzaku, Swift observations and ground based optical and archival nIR/IR data. Swift J1907.3-2050 is highly variable from hours to months-years at all wavelengths. No coherent X-ray pulses are detected but rather transient features. The X-ray spectrum reveals a multi-temperature optically thin plasma absorbed by complex neutral material and a soft black body component arising from a small area. These characteristics are remarkably similar to those observed in magnetic CVs. A supra-solar abundance of nitrogen could arise from nuclear processed material from the donor star. Swift J1907.3-2050 could be a peculiar magnetic CV with the second longest (20.82 h) binary period. IGRJ12123-5802 is variable in the X-rays on a timescale of ~7.6 h. No coherent pulsations are detected, but its spectral characteristics suggest that it could be a magnetic CV of the Intermediate Polar (IP) type. IGRJ19552+0044 shows two X-ray periods, 1.38 h and 1.69 h and a X-ray spectrum characterized by a multi-temperature plasma with little absorption.We derive a low accretion rate, consistent with a CV below the orbital period gap. Its peculiar nIR/IR spectrum suggests a contribution from cyclotron emission. It could either be a pre-polar or an IP with the lowest degree of asynchronism.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS. 14 pages, 11 figures, 5 table

    From angle-action to Cartesian coordinates: A key transformation for molecular dynamics

    The transformation from angle-action variables to Cartesian coordinates is a crucial step of the (semi) classical description of bimolecular collisions and photo-fragmentations. The basic reason is that dynamical conditions corresponding to experiments are ideally generated in angle-action variables whereas the classical equations of motion are ideally solved in Cartesian coordinates by standard numerical approaches. To our knowledge, the previous transformation is available in the literature only for triatomic systems.     Hadron Masses From Novel Fat-Link Fermion Actions

    The hadron mass spectrum is calculated in lattice QCD using a novel fat-link clover fermion action in which only the irrelevant operators in the fermion action are constructed using smeared links. The simulations are performed on a 16^3 x 32 lattice with a lattice spacing of a=0.125 fm. We compare actions with n=4 and 12 smearing sweeps with a smearing fraction of 0.7.     On the Invariant Theory of Weingarten Surfaces in Euclidean Space

    We prove that any strongly regular Weingarten surface in Euclidean space carries locally geometric principal parameters. The basic theorem states that any strongly regular Weingarten surface is determined up to a motion by its structural functions and the normal curvature function satisfying a geometric differential equation. We apply these results to the special Weingarten surfaces: minimal surfaces, surfaces of constant mean curvature and surfaces of constant Gauss curvature.Comment: 16 page

    Characteristics of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Abkhazia (Georgia), a high-prevalence area in Eastern Europe

    Although multidrug-resistant (MDR) tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Eastern Europe, the factors contributing to emergence, spread and containment of MDR-TB are not well defined. Here, we analysed the characteristics of drug-resistant TB in a cross-sectional study in Abkhazia (Georgia) between 2003 and 2005, where standard short-course chemotherapy is supplemented with individualized drug-resistance therapy. Drug susceptibility testing (DST) and molecular typing were carried out for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex strains from consecutive smear-positive TB patients. Out of 366 patients, 60.4% were resistant to any first-line drugs and 21% had MDR-TB. Overall, 25% of all strains belong to the Beijing genotype, which was found to be strongly associated with the risk of MDR-TB (OR 25.9, 95% CI 10.2-66.0) and transmission (OR 2.8, 95% CI 1.6-5.0). One dominant MDR Beijing clone represents 23% of all MDR-TB cases. The level of MDR-TB did not decline during the study period, coinciding with increasing levels of MDR Beijing strains among previously treated cases. Standard chemotherapy plus individualized drug-resistance therapy, guided by conventional DST, might be not sufficient to control MDR-TB in Eastern Europe in light of the spread of "highly transmissible" MDR Beijing strains circulating in the community
