A general multivariate latent growth model with applications in student careers Data warehouses
The evaluation of the formative process in the University system has been
assuming an ever increasing importance in the European countries. Within this
context the analysis of student performance and capabilities plays a
fundamental role. In this work we propose a multivariate latent growth model
for studying the performances of a cohort of students of the University of
Bologna. The model proposed is innovative since it is composed by: (1)
multivariate growth models that allow to capture the different dynamics of
student performance indicators over time and (2) a factor model that allows to
measure the general latent student capability. The flexibility of the model
proposed allows its applications in several fields such as socio-economic
settings in which personal behaviours are studied by using panel data.Comment: 20 page
Magnetic field stabilization for high-accuracy mass measurements on exotic nuclides
The magnetic-field stability of a mass spectrometer plays a crucial role in
precision mass measurements. In the case of mass determination of short-lived
nuclides with a Penning trap, major causes of instabilities are temperature
fluctuations in the vicinity of the trap and pressure fluctuations in the
liquid helium cryostat of the superconducting magnet. Thus systems for the
temperature and pressure stabilization of the Penning trap mass spectrometer
ISOLTRAP at the ISOLDE facility at CERN have been installed. A reduction of the
fluctuations by at least one order of magnitude downto dT=+/-5mK and
dp=+/-50mtorr has been achieved, which corresponds to a relative frequency
change of 2.7x10^{-9} and 1.5x10^{-10}, respectively. With this stabilization
the frequency determination with the Penning trap only shows a linear temporal
drift over several hours on the 10 ppb level due to the finite resistance of
the superconducting magnet coils.Comment: 23 pages, 13 figure
The Ramsey method in high-precision mass spectrometry with Penning traps: Experimental results
The highest precision in direct mass measurements is obtained with Penning
trap mass spectrometry. Most experiments use the interconversion of the
magnetron and cyclotron motional modes of the stored ion due to excitation by
external radiofrequency-quadrupole fields. In this work a new excitation
scheme, Ramsey's method of time-separated oscillatory fields, has been
successfully tested. It has been shown to reduce significantly the uncertainty
in the determination of the cyclotron frequency and thus of the ion mass of
interest. The theoretical description of the ion motion excited with Ramsey's
method in a Penning trap and subsequently the calculation of the resonance line
shapes for different excitation times, pulse structures, and detunings of the
quadrupole field has been carried out in a quantum mechanical framework and is
discussed in detail in the preceding article in this journal by M. Kretzschmar.
Here, the new excitation technique has been applied with the ISOLTRAP mass
spectrometer at ISOLDE/CERN for mass measurements on stable as well as
short-lived nuclides. The experimental resonances are in agreement with the
theoretical predictions and a precision gain close to a factor of four was
achieved compared to the use of the conventional excitation technique.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figures, 2 table
Position-sensitive ion detection in precision Penning trap mass spectrometry
A commercial, position-sensitive ion detector was used for the first time for
the time-of-flight ion-cyclotron resonance detection technique in Penning trap
mass spectrometry. In this work, the characteristics of the detector and its
implementation in a Penning trap mass spectrometer will be presented. In
addition, simulations and experimental studies concerning the observation of
ions ejected from a Penning trap are described. This will allow for a precise
monitoring of the state of ion motion in the trap.Comment: 20 pages, 13 figure
Ranking Spaces for Predicting Human Movement in an Urban Environment
A city can be topologically represented as a connectivity graph, consisting
of nodes representing individual spaces and links if the corresponding spaces
are intersected. It turns out in the space syntax literature that some defined
topological metrics can capture human movement rates in individual spaces. In
other words, the topological metrics are significantly correlated to human
movement rates, and individual spaces can be ranked by the metrics for
predicting human movement. However, this correlation has never been well
justified. In this paper, we study the same issue by applying the weighted
PageRank algorithm to the connectivity graph or space-space topology for
ranking the individual spaces, and find surprisingly that (1) the PageRank
scores are better correlated to human movement rates than the space syntax
metrics, and (2) the underlying space-space topology demonstrates small world
and scale free properties. The findings provide a novel justification as to why
space syntax, or topological analysis in general, can be used to predict human
movement. We further conjecture that this kind of analysis is no more than
predicting a drunkard's walking on a small world and scale free network.

A General Panel Model with Random and Fixed Effects: A Structural Equations Approach
Fixed and random effects models for longitudinal data are common in sociology. Their primary advantage is that they control for time-invariant omitted variables. However, analysts face several issues when they employ these models. One is the uncertainty of whether to apply the fixed effects (FEM) versus the random effects (REM) models. Another less discussed issue is that the FEM and REM models as usually implemented might be insufficiently flexible. For instance, the effects of variables, including the latent time-invariant variable, might change over time rather than be constant as in the usual FEM and REM. The latent time-invariant variable might correlate with some variables and not others. Lagged endogenous variables might be necessary. Alternatives that move beyond the classic FEM and REM models are known, but they involve different estimators and software that make these extended models difficult to implement and to compare. This paper presents a general panel model that includes the standard FEM and REM as special cases. In addition, it provides a sequence of nested models that provide a richer range of models that researchers can easily compare with likelihood ratio tests and fit statistics. Furthermore, researchers can implement our general panel model and its special cases in widely available structural equation models (SEMs) software. The paper is oriented towards applied researchers with most technical details given in the appendix and footnotes. An extended empirical example illustrates our results

The Role of the IMF in Future Sovereign Debt Restructurings: Report of the Annenberg House Expert Group
A meeting of international finance and insolvency experts was held on November 2, 2013 at the Annenberg House in Santa Monica, California. The meeting was co-hosted by the USC Law School and the Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands. The goal was to solicit the views of experts on the implications of the IMFâs April 26, 2013 paper captioned âSovereign Debt Restructuring -- Recent Developments and Implications for the Fundâs Legal and Policy Frameworkâ. The April 26 paper may signal a shift in IMF policies in the area of sovereign debt workouts. Although the Expert Group discussed a number of the ideas contained in the April 26 paper, attention focused on paragraph 32 of that paper. That paragraph states in relevant part: âThere may be a case for exploring additional ways to limit the risk that Fund resources will simply be used to bail out private creditors. For example, a presumption could be established that some form of a creditor bail-in measure would be implemented as a condition for Fund lending in cases where, although no clear-cut determination has been made that the debt is unsustainable, the member has lost market access and prospects for regaining market access are uncertain.â
