This paper gives an overview of the state of the art research in the field of knowledge management, based on the articles with the key word ā€knowledge managementā€ at the conference on design (DESIGN 2014). First, it illustrates key obstacles to knowledge management which is necessary to be aware of when implementing knowledge management systems in companies. Obstacles affect the selection of the knowledge map model of the company that will be used during implementation. The methodology for the systematic improvement of knowledge of the company through defining goals, creating a map of the existing and desired knowledge and choice of measures for the advancement of the current to the desired state is described. One of the possible methods of evaluation of knowledge of the company is presented including the overview of the modes of transmission of knowledge, i.e. communication among co ā€’ workers on a project that takes place in a global setting

Design Principle for Additive Manufacturing: Direct Metal Sintering

    Get PDF
Additive Manufacturing (AM) brought new design possibilities and freedom to the product design process. However, as the existing design rules and design limitations do not apply to the AM, designers require new methods and tools to utilise the full potential of AM. The stated is especially noticeable in the design of metal products made with AM, particularly with the Direct Metal Laser Sintering (DMLS) process. The research proposes a methodological approach for analysing the existing DMLS products made with DMLS to extract design knowledge. The methodology is applied to the pool of DMLS from which 15 design principles are extracted that formalise design knowledge about DMLS. The design principles are intended to be used in the early design stages of the design process as a source of design knowledge and inspiration for conceptualising new and innovative products that will be made using DMLS

Relating Problem-Solving Approach to Turn-Taking in Communication of Design Teams

This paper builds on the turn-taking model of verbal communication and proposes a framework for relating the problem-solving style to the turn-taking model. The framework aims at enabling a more comprehensive investigation of verbal communication in team design activities. An empirical study has been conducted to test the framework and identify the relationship between individuals\u27 problem-solving styles and the corresponding percentages of turn transitions. The results show a non-linear relationship between diversity in Orientation to Change and Ways of Deciding dimensions of problem-solving style and the percentage of turn transitions. The non-linear relationship has been explained by referring to team diversity-related theories on information/decision-making and social categorisation. The empirical study demonstrated that the framework is useful for providing a more comprehensive description of communication patterns within design teams

Todayā€™s PLM systems are limited by not providing platform for discussions among workers and other related human entities in product development. Sociotechnical model suggests that the communication is essential when trying to implement system traceability and when there is a need for better understanding of product development process. This paper proposes integration of private social network in PLM system to improve management of communication in product development process, in order to capture design knowledge

Case studies to explore indexing issues in product design traceability framework

Little is currently understood about the requirements for engineering information traceability in product development environment, and there are few methods by which effective traceability can be ensured. First part of paper presents two case studies: an analysis of current traceability practice in automotive industry supplier, and an experiment in implementation of taxonomy based software tool for knowledge indexing in medium sized company. Based on findings from case studies, the further research seeks the answers how the ontology based approach to defining the context and associated set of indices could lead towards generation of navigable semantic network that will be able to fulfil complex traceability requirements in customizable environment. Proposed approach suggests the definition of the context for tracing by "extracting " the subsets of ontology. Elements of ontology subset are associated with information objects (design documentation) belonging to design episode which is to be traced. Tracing procedure is focused (but not exclusively) on events that are the part of the process of information object management in PLM system
