When Duty Calls. A Faith & Health Collaborative Response to COVID 19 and Social Justice: A Commentary

    Get PDF
We provide information pertaining to an interdisciplinary collaboration in West Central Florida that launched a faith & wellness teleconference intervention in March 2020 in response to the COVID-19 crisis. The collaborative partners engaged from across the 4-county region upon community lockdowns in response to the COVID-19 crisis and later addressing calls for social justice due to the deaths of George Floyd and other African Americans. For 17-weeks Christian and Muslim faith leaders provided live messages of hope along with community partners providing wellness (mental health and wellbeing) focused strategies for coping with the crisis. Thematic analysis of anecdoctal comments revealed themes of community collaboration, systemic racism, faith leader needs and others. The concluding public health implications are provided including the importance of academic public health community engagement for building trust, increasing inclusivity, taking action, and overcoming obstacles to community intervention planning in times of crisis

Community Approaches to Veterans and Active-Duty Service Member Suicide Prevention Through Public Health Outreach: A Commentary

We discuss insights on a West Central Florida community-based Veterans suicide prevention effort- a series of Veterans coffee socials. Noted as a public health crisis which has been well documented, the article provides an overview of the importance of public health approaches and academic public health engagement at a local level to addressing suicide prevention at community levels. An active-duty service member’s perspective is provided that points to common pain points that that extend to the Veterans community with reintegration challenges. A community-based participatory research methodology has been applied which stressed the importance of community partners (e.g., public, private and academic) coming together from across two counties to start an evolving series of monthly coffee socials. Key focus is placed on strengthening social connectedness, reducing stigma related to mental health and wellbeing for Veterans and active-duty service members, and expanding awareness about resources available to help those in need. Theoretical perspective links this issue to both the importance of social capital building and the need for an expanded view of the interpersonal theory of suicide. This commentary offers preliminary points on the first 6-months of these Veterans coffee socials with anecdotal data from post-program evaluation surveys. Conclusions and implications for practice are framed how a simple yet complex intervention can make an impact and help their community’s Veterans and other at-risk populations in suicide prevention outreach

Homelessness in urban communities in the US: A Scoping Review utilizing the Socio-Ecological Model

Homelessness remains a core element of the current housing stability crisis in the United States, especially in urban communities. Disparities are an important part of the pathway to homelessness, but they alone are not enough to generate and perpetuate homelessness in the US. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze existing literature to provide an evidence-based framework to help inform homeless-related policies, programs, and interventions to improve the quality of life for homeless individuals. This scoping review aims to map the last five years\u27 literature around homelessness in U.S. urban communities by utilizing the socioecological model to analyze system-based implicated factors. The PubMed database was used to search articles from 2016 to 2020. Included articles were based in the United States at urban communities involving homeless individuals or families. A total of 145 articles were found for screening. Forty-nine articles met the selection criteria. A Florida-based university street medicine team involved in this research project highlights the need for an interprofessional approach to homelessness. The results of this scoping review suggest that structural, systemic, and historical factors at all the levels of the socioecological model are implicated in the complex reality of homelessness in U.S. urban communities generating individual and collective disparities. Future research and practice need to elucidate the impact of intersectionality among factors associated with homelessness

The COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted all aspects of life, from health to financial to social. College students in particular have faced difficulties adjusting to an entirely virtual atmosphere, compounding the normal stressors that come with full class loads and transitioning into more independent adult lives. In response to the onset of the COVID-19 crisis, a faculty member at the University of South Florida’s College of Public Health designed impromptu, free dance lessons offered through a virtual video platform to the college and broader community. The lessons were offered with the intent of providing a healthy and engaging environment to help students and others in the community cope with lockdown stress, depression, and anxiety throughout spring and summer 2020. This article summarizes the structure of the intervention, lessons learned throughout implementation, and the broader practice potential during the COVID-19 pandemic and beyond
