Examining Injury Data Reporting Practices Among Wildland Firefighters
Wildland Firefighter (WLFF) Crews lack an injury surveillance program to collect information on non-traumatic and traumatic injuries. Tactical athletes including: police, military and structural firefighters all have a variety of collection systems in place for injury data collection. The lack of injury data prevents WLFF crews from identifying high-risk environments, implementing injury prevention programs, and improving the overall quality of care on the job. Over the last several decades the recent rise in wildfire occurrences and wildfire suppression costs creates a need for healthy and strong individuals in the field. The cost of firefighter salaries and medical care can be mitigated with the use of an athletic trainer along with better knowledge of on the job injuries. In this project we suggested an effective injury surveillance program document that can be used in data collection out in the field. We also addressed in this project the importance of having an athletic trainer in the field to promote health and safety among wildland firefighters. A review of current practices in injury surveillance was conducted in other tactical professions such as military, structural firefighting and police. Strengths and weaknesses of each injury surveillance system were identified to facilitate development of an injury surveillance program for wildland firefighters

What is a Freestanding Emergency Department? Definitions Differ Across Major United States Data Sources
Introduction: Despite the growing number of freestanding emergency departments (FSED) in the United States (US), FSED definitions differ across major US data sources of healthcare facilities and use. We compare these sources and propose a universal definition of FSED (and its two major types) to improve communications regarding these facilities and their patients.Methods: We collected definitions of FSEDs from 11 national data sources using their websites, email, and telephone communications. For each source, we asked how they define FSEDs, whether being open 24/7 is a requirement to be called an ED, and whether they maintain a dataset of FSEDs.Results: Definitions varied across the data sources. All sources recognize FSEDs in their definitions, regardless of type; only one (the National Health Intervew Survey) does not differentiate them from other EDs. Five of the 11 sources (45%) omit autonomous FSEDs from their definitions and do not separately identify satellite FSEDs from their affiliated hospitals. One source does separately identify satellite FSEDs from their affiliated hospitals, but also omits autonomous FSEDs. Furthermore, three of the 11 sources (27%) do not require being open 24/7, while all others (73%) employ this criterion. Six of the 11 (55%) maintain datasets of FSEDs using their definition.Conclusion: As FSEDs continue to change the landscape of emergency care, it is important that they also be represented in national ED data sources. The current differences in the definition of an FSED make it difficult to provide accurate and longitudinal analysis for these facilities and patients who receive services at these facilities. We propose a universal definition of FSEDs as described by both the American College of Emergency Physicians and the National Emergency Department Inventory. Implementing a standard definition would facilitate a more accurate representation of FSEDs in national data sources and enhance ongoing efforts to improve the quality of emergency care delivered in FSEDs
First global analysis of SEASAT scatterometer winds and potential for meteorological research
The first global wind fields from SEASAT-A scatterometer (SASS) data were produced. Fifteen days of record are available on tape, with unique wind directions indicated for each observation. The methodology of the production of this data set is described, as well as the testing of its validity. A number of displays of the data, on large and small scales, analyzed and gridded, are provided
A new parameterization of an empirical model for wind/ocean scatterometry
The power law form of the SEASAT A Scatterometer System (SASS) empirical backscatter-to-wind model function does not uniformly meet the instrument performance over the range 4 to 24 /ms. Analysis indicates that the horizontal polarization (H-Pol) and vertical polarization (V-Pol) components of the benchmark SASS1 model function yield self-consistent results only for a small mid-range of speeds at larger incidence angles, and for a somewhat larger range of speeds at smaller incidence angles. Comparison of SASS1 to in situ data over the Gulf of Alaska region further underscores the shortcomings of the power law form. Finally, a physically based empirical SASS model is proposed which corrects some of the deficiencies of power law models like SASS1. The new model allows the mutual determination of sea surface wind stress and wind speed in a consistent manner from SASS backscatter measurements

Developing a second generation Laue lens prototype: high reflectivity crystals and accurate assembly
Laue lenses are an emerging technology that will enhance gamma-ray telescope
sensitivity by one to two orders of magnitude in selected energy bands of the
\sim 100 keV to \sim 1.5 MeV range. This optic would be particularly well
adapted to the observation of faint gamma ray lines, as required for the study
of Supernovae and Galactic positron annihilation. It could also prove very
useful for the study of hard X-ray tails from a variety of compact objects,
especially making a difference by providing sufficient sensitivity for
polarization to be measured by the focal plane detector. Our group has been
addressing the two key issues relevant to improve performance with respect to
the first generation of Laue lens prototypes: obtaining large numbers of
efficient crystals and developing a method to fix them with accurate
orientation and dense packing factor onto a substrate. We present preliminary
results of an on-going study aiming to enable a large number of crystals
suitable for diffraction at energies above 500 keV. In addition, we show the
first results of the Laue lens prototype assembled using our beamline at SSL/UC
Berkeley, which demonstrates our ability to orient and glue crystals with
accuracy of a few arcsec, as required for an efficient Laue lens telescope.Comment: Published in the proceedings of the SPIE conference held in San Diego

Spectral Analysis of GRBs Measured by RHESSI
The Ge spectrometer of the RHESSI satellite is sensitive to Gamma Ray Bursts
(GRBs) from about 40 keV up to 17 MeV, thus ideally complementing the Swift/BAT
instrument whose sensitivity decreases above 150 keV. We present preliminary
results of spectral fits of RHESSI GRB data. After describing our method, the

Examining the effects of Referent Power on Intrinsic Motivation in organisations: a self-concept based approach
Using a self-concept based approach we examine the literature for evidence of effects, induced by referent power, on the intrinsic motivation of employees. We propose that the subject of a referent power relationship will be intrinsically motivated to affirm, or enhance their self-concept, in relation to characteristics of a referent agent. Hypotheses were developed and tested using data from 311 employees of a large consulting firm. We found empirical support for the view that referent motivation leads to behaviour in individuals that is in accord with characteristics of a referent agent, with this behaviour resulting in affirmation or enhancement of their self-concept
A Note on Frame Dragging
The measurement of spin effects in general relativity has recently taken
centre stage with the successfully launched Gravity Probe B experiment coming
toward an end, coupled with recently reported measurements using laser ranging.
Many accounts of these experiments have been in terms of frame-dragging. We
point out that this terminology has given rise to much confusion and that a
better description is in terms of spin-orbit and spin-spin effects. In
particular, we point out that the de Sitter precession (which has been mesured
to a high accuracy) is also a frame-dragging effect and provides an accurate
benchmark measurement of spin-orbit effects which GPB needs to emulate
Diffuse Galactic Soft Gamma-Ray Emission
The Galactic diffuse soft gamma-ray (30-800 keV) emission has been measured
from the Galactic Center by the HIREGS balloon-borne germanium spectrometer to
determine the spectral characteristics and origin of the emission. The
resulting Galactic diffuse continuum is found to agree well with a single
power-law (plus positronium) over the entire energy range, consistent with RXTE
and COMPTEL/CGRO observations at lower and higher energies, respectively. We
find no evidence of spectral steepening below 200 keV, as has been reported in
previous observations. The spatial distribution along the Galactic ridge is
found to be nearly flat, with upper limits set on the longitudinal gradient,
and with no evidence of an edge in the observed region. The soft gamma-ray
diffuse spectrum is well modeled by inverse Compton scattering of interstellar
radiation off of cosmic-ray electrons, minimizing the need to invoke
inefficient nonthermal bremsstrahlung emission. The resulting power requirement
is well within that provided by Galactic supernovae. We speculate that the
measured spectrum provides the first direct constraints on the cosmic-ray
