Consolidation of the 45-Year Old PS Main Magnet System
After a major coil insulation breakdown on two of the 47-year-old CERN PS main magnets in 2003, an extensive magnet consolidation program has been launched. This article reviews the analysis of the magnet state be-fore the repair and the applied major improvements. An overview is given of the production of the new compo-nents, the actual refurbishment and the commissioning of the main magnet system after 18 months shutdown
Development of an enhanced dielectric insulation for the PS Bus Bars
This document reports about the development of an enhanced dielectric insulation for the magnet bus bars installed in the PS accelerator. The bus bars connect the hundred and one individual main magnets of the PS in series from the terminal connection to the ring magnets. There are 8 different type of bus bars, which are presently no longer covered by operational spare units. It is planned first to re-establish the required spare stock by manufacturing new bus-bars and therafter, to be potentially capable of replacing all the PS bar bars with new ones in case of possible future evidence of systematic end of life degradation
The sand remobilization results from a decreased soil cover by the vegetation following repeated droughts and human interventions. The SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) interferometric coherence provides a unique measure of the surface changes and dynamics between two SAR acquisitions. The 1/2 tandem ERS mission allows a pair of images to be obtained at only 24 hours interval, so that the combination of tandem coherence and amplitude images enables the detection of active sand areas, oasis vegetation, and even villages and some cattle tracks. Seven pairs of ERS 1/2 images at one day interval during the dry season have been processed: two in the Gouré area in December 1995 and April 1996, two at Goudoumaria in April 1996 and November 1998, and three at Maïné-Soroa in December 1995, April 1996 and February 1999. The temporal analysis of the tandem coherence identifi ed the active sand areas and migrating dunes in all sub-areas. The SAR tandem coherence thus proves to be an effec-tive tool for mapping the dune activity and for monitoring the sand displacements
Intrathoracic Lymphadenitis Caused by Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium tuberculosis in an Immunocompetent Child.
By means of a DNA probe assay (INNO-LiPA) we identified 2 different mycobacterial strains (Mycobacterium avium and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex) from a mediastinal lymph node biopsy obtained from an apparently immunocompetent 7.5-year-old girl, whereas culture grew only M. avium. Clinicians should be aware of the possible occurrence of mixed infection involving both nontuberculous mycobacteria and M. tuberculosis

A Novel Field Cage Design for the CPS IPM and Systematic Errors in Beam Size and Emittance
An ionization profile monitor has been recently installed in the CERN proton synchrotron. We design a novel and simple structure field cage that suppresses the secondary electrons that are induced by the ionized ions. We discuss a field cage design, and the systematic error on the basis of beam size and emittance, considering the non-uniformity of the fields, the space-charge effect of the beam, and the lattice parameter errors.A residual gas ionization profile monitor has been recently installed in the CERN proton synchrotron. Pneumonie nécrosante de l'enfant: à propos de 4 cas.
OBJECTIVES: To describe the necrotizing pneumonia in children, a severe affection which prevalence seems to increase; to review literature. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We report 4 cases of necrotizing pneumonia: symptoms, agents, diagnostic tools, treatment and long term evolution. RESULTS: In 2 cases, pneumatoceles could be seen at chest X-ray. Two patients presented a deficiency of anti-pneumococcal antibodies. Three needed insertion of a pleural chest tube of whom 1 had a resection of a small piece of necrotic lung. Duration of hospitalisation is longer than in uncomplicated pneumonias. CONCLUSION: Necrotizing pneumonia is a severe affection. Diagnosis has to be made by lung CT. Long term evolution is excellent in pediatric population with serious management at hospital.
