The prevalence rate of multiple sclerosis (MS) in Volyn Region (101.0 per 100000) is the highest in Ukraine. To study MS risk factors in Volyn Region, special questionnaires were distributed among all MS patients residing in Volyn region. Results were obtained from 227 respondents including 154 women and 73 men of mean age 43±10.6 years. The control group included 105 healthy respondents inhabiting Volyn region. We found associated risk factors for MS to be: mother of Volyn origin, maternal age after 27 years old and paternal age after 29 years old at birth of respondent, subject\u27s born as a third child, brestfeeding for less than one year, living in the zone of industrial pollution, near mobile, TV- and radio re-translators, full traffic automobile roads, time spending outdoors less than one hour in winter and less than eight hours in summer, consumption of fruit and vegetables less than 5 times a week, of beef less than 3 times a week, poultry meet less than 3, berries less than 3, cereals less than 4 times a week, chronic stressful situations in life. Patients with MS more frequently reported AVRI, hepatitis and herpes simplex virus. Among patients with MS there were fewer respondents with history of chickenpox, rubella and DPT (diphtheria, pertussis, tetanus), BCG immunizations. Here, we introduced a novel study of MS risk factors within Volyn Region. The Registry established in 2012 is being constantly updated and can be a database for a long-term retrospective study involving a large number of patients

Odrealniony realizm…

The article presents an analysis of Zbigniew Herbert’s (1924–1998) poem Trzy studia na temat realizmu (Three Studies on Realism) from a selection Hermes, pies i gwiazda (1957). The poem consists of three thematically separated parts, presenting different types of realism. All the concepts of realism became deconstructed and rejected: the first two were rejected directly, while the third was ironically addressed

Modeling historic, current, and available aboveground forest biomass along the Missouri River corridor

"July 2014."Dissertation Supervisor: Dr. Hong S. He.Dissertation Supervisor: Dr. Shibu Jose.Includes vita. This research presents the culmination of statistical, landscape, and geospatial analyses that examine the geographic dynamics of aboveground forest biomass (AFB) within the Missouri River corridor, Missouri USA. The Missouri River corridor is a region specifically within Missouri that encompasses 106,000 km², and is regarded as a processing region for improving the viability of Missouri's biomass/biofuel industry. Current and historic forest inventory data coupled with remote sensing, edaphic, physiographic, and climate variables were integrated into an ensemble regression tree method, Random Forest (RF), to estimate AFB, determine external driving forces of AFB, and visualize geographic locations where the greatest deviations exist between current and historic AFB values. The applicability of constructing a hybrid modeling framework using RF was initially tested in Chapter 2 by estimating current (observed data derived from Forest Inventory and Analysis) and theoretical (based on 20% of AFB found within Missouri) AFB, and calculating the percent change to determine percent changes in AFB across the landscape. The third chapter extended the RF modeling procedure to include historical information derived from General Land Office (GLO) data to estimate a baseline measure of AFB. Current AFB was again estimated and then compared to historic values where an additional synthesis was performed to investigate the top predictors of AFB. The fourth chapter examined a fuzzy logic approach for developing a suitability index based on available AFB. Available AFB was determined by applying physical constraints onto estimated AFB from the RF model, which included forest transitions and distance to rivers. The model results failed to reject our null hypothesis that there were no differences between observed and predicted AFB, and x model accuracy was very low for all AFB estimate. Results from these investigations indicated that 1) the greatest potential for increasing AFB may be along the floodplains of the Missouri anIncludes bibliographical references (pages 123-137)

A study of the relationship between viability, culturability and virulence in environmental populations of Legionella pneumophila

Many researchers have observed that bacteria can enter into a viable but nonculturable state. In order to study this phenomenon in Legionella pneumophila, a model hot water system was constructed to serve as a source of planktonic and biofilm cells. Both planktonic and biofilm L. pneumophila existed primarily as nonculturable cells. A portion of these nonculturable cells were shown to be viable using the tetrazolium salt, INT, which is an indicator of respiratory activity. The nonLegionella bacteria which coexisted with L. pneumophila in the water system had no effect on its culturability. Inoculation of embryonated chicken eggs indicated that a mixture of planktonic cells (L. pneumophila and nonLegionella) from the water system were more virulent than a mixture of biofilm cells. However, embryo deaths were due primarily to the nonLegionella, and L. pneumophila had little or no impact. Published reports of studies where embryonated eggs are inoculated with environmental samples and the virulence of the mixture attributed to the L. pneumophila in the sample should be reevaluated
