    Survey of Subterranean Termite (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae) Utilization of Temperate Forests

    Both native and invasive subterranean termites (Isoptera: Rhinotermitidae), including the Formosan subterranean termite, are well known pests of urban areas, but little is known about their distribution or impact in forest ecosystems of the southeastern United States. Recently harvested timber stumps were mechanically inspected for the presence of subterranean termites in multiple locations across southern Mississippi and eastern Louisiana. A systematic line plot cruise with 100 x 200m spacing and1/20thha plots was implemented, and all stumps with a diameter greater than 7.6cm were inspected. In total, 7,413 stumps were inspected for the presence of subterranean termites, and 406 of those contained native subterranean termite (Reticulitermes spp) infestations. Light traps were also placed at 8 sites to detect the presence of subterranean termite alates. While no invasive Formosan subterranean termites were found during mechanical inspection of tree stumps, alates were captured in light traps at three sites. The proportion of stumps infested with subterranean termites was negatively correlated with the number of stumps in each plot. Although 6.27% of pine stumps and 1.86% of hardwood stumps were infested, no correlation was found between subterranean termite presence and type of stump (pine or hardwood).     Mutation Size Optimizes Speciation in an Evolutionary Model

    The role of mutation rate in optimizing key features of evolutionary dynamics has recently been investigated in various computational models. Here, we address the related question of how maximum mutation size affects the formation of species in a simple computational evolutionary model. We find that the number of species is maximized for intermediate values of a mutation size parameter ÎĽ; the result is observed for evolving organisms on a randomly changing landscape as well as in a version of the model where negative feedback exists between the local population size and the fitness provided by the landscape. The same result is observed for various distributions of mutation values within the limits set by ÎĽ. When organisms with various values of ÎĽ compete against each other, those with intermediate ÎĽ values are found to survive. The surviving values of ÎĽ from these competition simulations, however, do not necessarily coincide with the values that maximize the number of species. These results suggest that various complex factors are involved in determining optimal mutation parameters for any population, and may also suggest approaches for building a computational bridge between the (micro) dynamics of mutations at the level of individual organisms and (macro) evolutionary dynamics at the species level

    Behavioral responses of terrestrial mammals to COVID-19 lockdowns

    COVID-19 lockdowns in early 2020 reduced human mobility, providing an opportunity to disentangle its effects on animals from those of landscape modifications. Using GPS data, we compared movements and road avoidance of 2300 terrestrial mammals (43 species) during the lockdowns to the same period in 2019. Individual responses were variable with no change in average movements or road avoidance behavior, likely due to variable lockdown conditions. However, under strict lockdowns 10-day 95th percentile displacements increased by 73%, suggesting increased landscape permeability. Animals' 1-hour 95th percentile displacements declined by 12% and animals were 36% closer to roads in areas of high human footprint, indicating reduced avoidance during lockdowns. Overall, lockdowns rapidly altered some spatial behaviors, highlighting variable but substantial impacts of human mobility on wildlife worldwide.acceptedVersio

    Urea transporters UT-A1 and UT-A3 accumulate in the plasma membrane in response to increased hypertonicity

First published August 20, 2008; doi:10.1152/ajprenal.90228.2008.-The UT-A1 and UT-A3 urea transporters are expressed in the terminal inner medullary collecting duct (IMCD) and play an important role in the production of concentrated urine. We showed that both hyperosmolarity and vasopressin increase urea permeability in perfused rat terminal IMCDs and that UT-A1 and UT-A3 accumulate in the plasma membrane in response to vasopressin. In this study, we investigated whether hyperosmolarity causes UT-A1 and/or UT-A3 to accumulate in the plasma membrane or represents a complimentary stimulatory pathway. Rat IMCD suspensions were incubated in 450 vs. 900 mosM solutions. We biotinylated the IMCD surface proteins, collected, and analyzed them. Membrane accumulation was assessed by Western blotting of the biotinylated protein pool probed with anti-UT-A1 or anti-UT-A3. We studied the effect of NaCl, urea, and sucrose as osmotic agents. Membrane-associated UT-A1 and UT-A3 increased relative to control levels when either NaCl (UT-A1 increased 37 +/- 6%; UT-A3 increased 46 +/- 13%) or sucrose (UT-A1 increased 81 +/- 13%; UT-A3 increased 60 +/- 8%) was used to increase osmolarity. There was no increase in membrane UT-A1 or UT-A3 when urea was added. Analogously, UT-A1 phosphorylation was increased in NaCl-and sucrose-but not in urea-based hyperosmolar solutions. Hypertonicity also increased UT-A3 phosphorylation. We conclude that the increase in the urea permeability in response to hyperosmolarity reflects both UT-A1 and UT-A3 movement to the plasma membrane and may be a direct response to tonicity. Furthermore, this movement is accompanied by, and may require, increased phosphorylation in response to hypertonicity

    The role of neurosurgeons in global public health: the case of folic acid fortification of staple foods to prevent spina bifida

    OBJECTIVE: The global neurosurgery movement arose at the crossroads of unmet neurosurgical needs and public health to address the global burden of neurosurgical disease. The case of folic acid fortification (FAF) of staple foods for the prevention of spina bifida and anencephaly (SBA) represents an example of a new neurosurgical paradigm focused on public health intervention in addition to the treatment of individual cases. The Global Alliance for the Prevention of Spina Bifida-F (GAPSBiF), a multidisciplinary coalition of neurosurgeons, pediatricians, geneticists, epidemiologists, food scientists, and fortification policy experts, was formed to advocate for FAF of staple foods worldwide. This paper serves as a review of the work of GAPSBiF thus far in advocating for universal FAF of commonly consumed staple foods to equitably prevent SBA caused by folic acid insufficiency. METHODS: A narrative review was performed using the PubMed and Google Scholar databases. RESULTS: In this review, the authors describe the impact of SBA on patients, caregivers, and health systems, as well as characterize the multifaceted requirements for proper spina bifida care, including multidisciplinary clinics and the transition of care, while highlighting the role of neurosurgeons. Then they discuss prevention policy approaches, including supplementation, fortification, and hybrid efforts with folic acid. Next, they use the example of FAF of staple foods as a model for neurosurgeons\u27 involvement in global public health through clinical practice, research, education and training, and advocacy. Last, they describe mechanisms for involvement in the above initiatives as a potential academic tenure track, including institutional partnerships, organized neurosurgery, neurosurgical expert groups, nongovernmental organizations, national or international governments, and multidisciplinary coalitions. CONCLUSIONS: The role of neurosurgeons in caring for children with spina bifida extends beyond treating patients in clinical practice and includes research, education and training, and advocacy initiatives to promote context-specific, evidence-based initiatives to public health problems. Promoting and championing FAF serves as an example of the far-reaching, impactful role that neurosurgeons worldwide may play at the intersection of neurosurgery and public health

    Preventing birth defects, saving lives, and promoting health equity: an urgent call to action for universal mandatory food fortification with folic acid

    July 20, 2021 marked the 30th anniversary of the publication of the landmark trial by the British Medical Research Council showing unequivocally that maternal intake of folic acid (vitamin B) starting before pregnancy prevents most cases of infant spina bifida and anencephaly-two major neural tube defects that are severe, disabling, and often fatal. Mandatory food fortification with folic acid is a safe, cost-effective, and sustainable intervention to prevent spina bifida and anencephaly. Yet few countries implement fortification with folic acid; only a quarter of all preventable spina bifida and anencephaly cases worldwide are currently avoided by food fortification. We summarise scientific evidence supporting immediate, mandatory fortification with folic acid to prevent the development of spina bifida and anencephaly. We make an urgent call to action for the World Health Assembly to pass a resolution for universal mandatory folic acid fortification. Such a resolution could accelerate the slow pace of spina bifida and anencephaly prevention globally, and will assist countries to reach their 2030 Sustainable Development Goals on child mortality and health equity. The cost of inaction is profound, and disproportionately impacts susceptible populations in low-income and middle-income countries
