Evaluating the Effectiveness of tutorial dialogue instruction in a Explotary learning context

We hypothesize that the creative nature of an exploratory learning environment creates an opportunity for the benefits of tutorial dialogue to be more clearly evidenced than in previously published studies. In a previous study we showed an advantage for tutorial dialogue support in an exploratory learning environment where that support was administered by human tutors [9]. Here, using a similar experimental setup and materials, we evaluate the effectiveness of tutorial dialogue agents modeled after the human tutors from that study. On the Truncated Pareto Distribution with applications
The Pareto probability distribution is widely applied in different fields
such us finance, physics, hydrology, geology and astronomy. This note deals
with an application of the Pareto distribution to astrophysics and more
precisely to the statistical analysis of mass of stars and of diameters of
asteroids. In particular a comparison between the usual Pareto distribution and
its truncated version is presented. Finally a possible physical mechanism that
produces Pareto tails for the distribution of the masses of stars is suggested.Comment: 10 pages 6 figure
Time-integrated luminosity recorded by the BABAR detector at the PEP-II e+e- collider
This article is the Preprint version of the final published artcile which can be accessed at the link below.We describe a measurement of the time-integrated luminosity of the data collected by the BABAR experiment at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy e+e- collider at the ϒ(4S), ϒ(3S), and ϒ(2S) resonances and in a continuum region below each resonance. We measure the time-integrated luminosity by counting e+e-→e+e- and (for the ϒ(4S) only) e+e-→μ+μ- candidate events, allowing additional photons in the final state. We use data-corrected simulation to determine the cross-sections and reconstruction efficiencies for these processes, as well as the major backgrounds. Due to the large cross-sections of e+e-→e+e- and e+e-→μ+μ-, the statistical uncertainties of the measurement are substantially smaller than the systematic uncertainties. The dominant systematic uncertainties are due to observed differences between data and simulation, as well as uncertainties on the cross-sections. For data collected on the ϒ(3S) and ϒ(2S) resonances, an additional uncertainty arises due to ϒ→e+e-X background. For data collected off the ϒ resonances, we estimate an additional uncertainty due to time dependent efficiency variations, which can affect the short off-resonance runs. Measurement of the B0-anti-B0-Oscillation Frequency with Inclusive Dilepton Events
The - oscillation frequency has been measured with a sample of
23 million \B\bar B pairs collected with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II
asymmetric B Factory at SLAC. In this sample, we select events in which both B
mesons decay semileptonically and use the charge of the leptons to identify the
flavor of each B meson. A simultaneous fit to the decay time difference
distributions for opposite- and same-sign dilepton events gives ps.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure, submitted to Physical Review Letter
The Hydrogen-Poor Superluminous Supernovae from the Zwicky Transient Facility Phase-I Survey: I. Light Curves and Measurements
During the Zwicky Transient Facility (ZTF) Phase-I operation, 78
hydrogen-poor superluminous supernovae (SLSNe-I) were discovered in less than
three years, making up the largest sample from a single survey. This paper
(Paper I) presents the data, including the optical/ultraviolet light curves and
classification spectra, while Paper II in this series will focus on the
detailed analysis of the light curves and modeling. Our photometry is primarily
taken by the ZTF in the bands, and with additional data from other
ground-based facilities and Swift. The events of our sample cover a redshift
range of , with a median and error (16\% and 84\%
percentiles) . The peak luminosity
covers \,mag, with a median
value of \,mag. Their light curves evolve slowly with
the mean rest-frame rise time of \,days. The
luminosity and time scale distributions suggest that low luminosity SLSNe-I
with peak luminosity \,mag or extremely fast rising events
(\,days) exist but are rare. We confirm previous findings that slowly
rising SLSNe-I also tend to fade slowly. The rest-frame color and temperature
evolution show large scatters, suggesting that the SLSN-I population may have
diverse spectral energy distributions. The peak rest-frame color shows a
moderate correlation with the peak absolute magnitude, i.e. brighter SLSNe-I
tend to have bluer colors. With optical and ultraviolet photometry, we
construct bolometric luminosity and derive a bolometric correction relation
generally applicable for converting -band photometry to bolometric

Observation of the baryonic decay B \uaf 0 \u2192 \u39bc+ p \uaf K-K+
We report the observation of the baryonic decay B\uaf0\u2192\u39bc+p\uafK-K+ using a data sample of 471
7106 BB\uaf pairs produced in e+e- annihilations at s=10.58GeV. This data sample was recorded with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II storage ring at SLAC. We find B(B\uaf0\u2192\u39bc+p\uafK-K+)=(2.5\ub10.4(stat)\ub10.2(syst)\ub10.6B(\u39bc+))
710-5, where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the uncertainty of the \u39bc+\u2192pK-\u3c0+ branching fraction, respectively. The result has a significance corresponding to 5.0 standard deviations, including all uncertainties. For the resonant decay B\uaf0\u2192\u39bc+p\uaf\u3c6, we determine the upper limit B(B\uaf0\u2192\u39bc+p\uaf\u3c6)<1.2

Measurement of the CP-Violating Asymmetry Amplitude sin2
We present results on time-dependent CP-violating asymmetries in neutral B decays to several CP eigenstates. The measurements use a data sample of about 88 million Y(4S) --> B Bbar decays collected between 1999 and 2002 with the BABAR detector at the PEP-II asymmetric-energy B Factory at SLAC. We study events in which one neutral B meson is fully reconstructed in a final state containing a charmonium meson and the other B meson is determined to be either a B0 or B0bar from its decay products. The amplitude of the CP-violating asymmetry, which in the Standard Model is proportional to sin2beta, is derived from the decay-time distributions in such events. We measure sin2beta = 0.741 +/- 0.067 (stat) +/- 0.033 (syst) and |lambda| = 0.948 +/- 0.051 (stat) +/- 0.017 (syst). The magnitude of lambda is consistent with unity, in agreement with the Standard Model expectation of no direct CP violation in these modes
High-reflectivity broadband distributed Bragg reflector lattice matched to ZnTe
We report on the realization of a high quality distributed Bragg reflector
with both high and low refractive index layers lattice matched to ZnTe. Our
structure is grown by molecular beam epitaxy and is based on binary compounds
only. The high refractive index layer is made of ZnTe, while the low index
material is made of a short period triple superlattice containing MgSe, MgTe,
and ZnTe. The high refractive index step of Delta_n=0.5 in the structure
results in a broad stopband and the reflectivity coefficient exceeding 99% for
only 15 Bragg pairs.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
