Parallel Parent–Child Mindfulness Intervention Among Chinese Migrant Families:A Mixed-Methods Feasibility Study
Purpose: This study examines the feasibility and effects of a parallel parent–child mindfulness intervention on parenting stress, child behavior, and parent–child relationship among low-income migrant families. Methods: Using a quasi-experimental design, 21 Chinese migrant parents and one child of each parent were assigned to an 8-week intervention (n = 11 pairs) or waitlist control (n = 10 pairs). Semi-structured qualitative interviews and pre–post quantitative measures were used to assess intervention feasibility and effects. Results: Qualitative interviews suggest mindfulness training promotes family well-being through enhanced parental and child emotional regulation. Quantitative results suggest within-group parenting stress significantly decreased in the intervention group (partial η 2 =.423) but not in controls (partial η 2 =.000); between-group analyses showed a nonsignificant, medium effect size on parenting stress (partial η 2 =.069). Conclusions: The intervention shows good feasibility and initial support for reducing parenting stress. Future research requires a larger randomized controlled trial among high-stress populations such as migrant families.</p
Using smart meters to estimate low voltage losses
Losses on low voltage networks are often substantial. For example, in the UK they have been estimated as being 4% of the energy supplied by low voltage networks. However, the breakdown of the losses to individual conductors and their split over time are poorly understood as generally only the peak demands and average loads over several months have been recorded. The introduction of domestic smart meters has the potential to change this. How domestic smart meter readings can be used to estimate the actual losses is analysed. In particular, the accuracy of using 30 minute readings compared with 1 minute readings, and how this accuracy could be improved, were investigated. This was achieved by assigning the data recorded by 100 smart meters with a time resolution of 1 minute to three test networks. Smart meter data from three sources were used in the investigation. It was found that 30 minute resolution data underestimated the losses by between 9% and 24%. By fitting an appropriate model to the data, it was possible to reduce the inaccuracy by approximately 50%. Having a smart meter time resolution of 10 minutes rather than 30 gave little improvement to the accuracy
Novel symptom clusters predict disease impact and healthcare utilisation in inflammatory bowel disease: Prospective longitudinal follow-up study
Background
Predicting adverse disease outcomes and high-volume users of healthcare amongst patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is difficult.
Aims
The aim of this study is to use latent class analysis to create novel clusters of patients and to assess whether these predict outcomes during 6.5 years of longitudinal follow-up.
Methods
Baseline demographic features, disease activity indices, anxiety, depression, and somatoform symptom-reporting scores were recorded for 692 adults. Faecal calprotectin (FC) was analysed at baseline in 348 (50.3%) patients (<250 mcg/g defined biochemical remission). Using baseline gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms, latent class analysis identified specific patient clusters. Rates of glucocorticosteroid prescription or flare, escalation, hospitalisation, or intestinal resection were compared between clusters using multivariate Cox regression.
Results
A three-cluster model was the optimum solution; 132 (19.1%) patients had below-average gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms (cluster 1), 352 (50.9%) had average levels of gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms (cluster 2), and 208 (30.1%) had the highest levels of both gastrointestinal and psychological symptoms (cluster 3). Compared with cluster 1, cluster 3 had significantly increased risk of flare or glucocorticosteroid prescription (hazard ratio (HR): 2.13; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.46–3.10), escalation (HR: 1.92; 95% CI: 1.34–2.76), a composite of escalation, hospitalisation, or intestinal resection (HR: 2.05; 95% CI: 1.45–2.88), or any of the endpoints of interest (HR: 2.06; 95% CI: 1.45–2.93). Healthcare utilisation was highest in cluster 3.
Conclusions
Novel model-based clusters identify patients with IBD at higher risk of adverse disease outcomes who are high-volume users of healthcare
Pairing of fermions in atomic traps and nuclei
Pairing gaps for fermionic atoms in harmonic oscillator traps are calculated
for a wide range of interaction strengths and particle number, and compared to
pairing in nuclei. Especially systems, where the pairing gap exceeds the level
spacing but is smaller than the shell splitting , are studied
which applies to most trapped Fermi atomic systems as well as to finite nuclei.
When solving the gap equation for a large trap with such multi-level pairing,
one finds that the matrix elements between nearby harmonic oscillator levels
and the quasi-particle energies lead to a double logarithm of the gap, and a
pronounced shell structure at magic numbers. It is argued that neutron and
proton pairing in nuclei belongs to the class of multi-level pairing, that
their shell structure follows naturally and that the gaps scale as - all in qualitative agreement with odd-even staggering of nuclear
binding energies. Pairing in large systems are related to that in the bulk
limit. For large nuclei the neutron and proton superfluid gaps approach the
asymptotic value in infinite nuclear matter: MeV.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figure
Bias in beliefs about the self is associated with depressive but not anxious mood
Background: Biases in beliefs about the self are associated with psychopathology and depressive and anxious mood, but it is not clear if both negative and positive beliefs are associated with depression or anxiety. We examined these relationships in people who present with a wide range of depressive and anxious mood across diagnostic categories. Methods: We probed positive and negative beliefs about the self with a task in which 74 female participants with either Affective Disorder (depression and/or anxiety), Borderline Personality Disorder or no psychiatric history indicated the degree to which 60 self-related words was “like them” or “not like them”. Depressive and anxious mood were assessed with the Beck Depression Inventory–II and the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Results: The participants with no psychiatric history (n=25) reported a positive bias in their beliefs about the self, the participants with Affective Disorder (n=23) reported no bias, and the participants with BPD (n=26) reported a negative bias. Two hierarchical multiple regressions demonstrated that the positive and negative beliefs contributed additively to the ratings of depression (corrected for anxiety), but did not contribute to the ratings of anxiety (corrected for depression). Limitations: Despite the apparent small sample size, the regression analyses indicated adequate sampling. Anxiety is a much more heterogeneous condition than is depression, so it may be difficult to find relevant self-descriptors. Only measures of endorsement were used. CP violation at a linear collider with transverse polarization
We show how transverse beam polarization at colliders can provide a
novel means to search for CP violation by observing the distribution of a
single final-state particle without measuring its spin. We suggest an azimuthal
asymmetry which singles out interference terms between standard model
contribution and new-physics scalar or tensor effective interactions in the
limit in which the electron mass is neglected. Such terms are inaccessible with
unpolarized or longitudinally polarized beams. The asymmetry is sensitive to CP
violation when the transverse polarizations of the electron and positron are in
opposite senses. The sensitivity of planned future linear colliders to
new-physics CP violation in is estimated in a
model-independent parametrization. It would be possible to put a bound of TeV on the new-physics scale at the 90% C.L. for
GeV and , with transverse polarizations of

A Study of the S=1/2 Alternating Chain using Multiprecision Methods
In this paper we present results for the ground state and low-lying
excitations of the alternating Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain. Our
more conventional techniques include perturbation theory about the dimer limit
and numerical diagonalization of systems of up to 28 spins. A novel application
of multiple precision numerical diagonalization allows us to determine
analytical perturbation series to high order; the results found using this
approach include ninth-order perturbation series for the ground state energy
and one magnon gap, which were previously known only to third order. We also
give the fifth-order dispersion relation and third-order exclusive neutron
scattering structure factor for one-magnon modes and numerical and analytical

Reversed anisotropies and thermal contraction of FCC (110) surfaces
The observed anisotropies of surface vibrations for unreconstructed FCC metal
(110) surfaces are often reversed from the "common sense" expectation. The
source of these reversals is investigated by performing ab initio density
functional theory calculations to obtain the surface force constant tensors for
Ag(110), Cu(110) and Al(110). The most striking result is a large enhancement
in the coupling between the first and third layers of the relaxed surface,
which strongly reduces the amplitude of out-of-plane vibrations of atoms in the
first layer. This also provides a simple explanation for the thermal
contraction of interlayer distances. Both the anisotropies and the thermal
contraction arise primarily as a result of the bond topology, with all three

Is there anybody out there? Occupancy of the carnivore guild in a temperate archipelago
Carnivores are important components of ecological communities with wide-ranging effects that vary with carnivore size, natural history, and hunting tactics. Researchers and managers should strive to understand both the presence and distribution of carnivores within their local environment. We studied the carnivore guild in the Apostle Islands, where the distribution and occupancy of carnivores was largely unknown. We monitored 19 islands with 160 functioning camera traps from 2014-2017, from which we collected 203,385 photographs across 49,280 trap nights. We documented 7,291 total wildlife events with 1,970 carnivore events, and detected 10 of the 12 terrestrial carnivores found in Wisconsin. Detection rates for species were generally higher in summer than winter, except for coyotes (Canis latrans) and red foxes (Vulpes vulpes). Finitesample occupancy estimates for carnivores varied across islands, with mean estimated occupancy across islands varying from a high of 0.73 for black bears to a low of 0.21 for gray wolves. Of the potential island biogeography explanatory variables for carnivore occupancy we considered, island size was the most important, followed by distance to the mainland, and then interisland distance. We estimated that terrestrial carnivore species varied in the number of islands they were detected on from 1 island for gray wolves to 13 islands for black bears. Estimated carnivore richness across islands (i.e., the number of carnivores occupying an island) also varied substantively from 1 species on Michigan Island to 10 species on Stockton Island. Island size and connectivity between islands appear important for the persistence of the carnivore community in the Apostle Islands
Short-lived Nuclei in the Early Solar System: Possible AGB Sources
(Abridged) We review abundances of short-lived nuclides in the early solar
system (ESS) and the methods used to determine them. We compare them to the
inventory for a uniform galactic production model. Within a factor of two,
observed abundances of several isotopes are compatible with this model. I-129
is an exception, with an ESS inventory much lower than expected. The isotopes
Pd-107, Fe-60, Ca-41, Cl-36, Al-26, and Be-10 require late addition to the
solar nebula. Be-10 is the product of particle irradiation of the solar system
as probably is Cl-36. Late injection by a supernova (SN) cannot be responsible
for most short-lived nuclei without excessively producing Mn-53; it can be the
source of Mn-53 and maybe Fe-60. If a late SN is responsible for these two
nuclei, it still cannot make Pd-107 and other isotopes. We emphasize an AGB
star as a source of nuclei, including Fe-60 and explore this possibility with
new stellar models. A dilution factor of about 4e-3 gives reasonable amounts of
many nuclei. We discuss the role of irradiation for Al-26, Cl-36 and Ca-41.
Conflict between scenarios is emphasized as well as the absence of a global
interpretation for the existing data. Abundances of actinides indicate a
quiescent interval of about 1e8 years for actinide group production in order to
explain the data on Pu-244 and new bounds on Cm-247. This interval is not
compatible with Hf-182 data, so a separate type of r-process is needed for at
least the actinides, distinct from the two types previously identified. The
apparent coincidence of the I-129 and trans-actinide time scales suggests that
the last actinide contribution was from an r-process that produced actinides
without fission recycling so that the yields at Ba and below were governed by
