Development and Sources of Labor Productivity in Chinese Provinces
As China exhibited unprecedented rapid economic growth ever since its reform and openness, the development and sources of labor productivity has gradually come to the forefront. This paper studies the development and the source of labor productivity in 31 Chinese provinces during the period of 2000-2009. The labor productivity is investigated through an examination at both the levels and the growth rate. Particularly, we first look at the production function relationship, to see the contribution of labor and other production factors to the gross domestic product. Then, a number of possible determinants are defined. They are regressed on the level and the growth rate of labor productivity to shed light on their relationships. Controlled for unobserved time-specific and province-specific effects, the fixed effects model with heteroskedasticity robust adjustments have been used for the estimation of three functions. Regional breakdown shows severe disparity in the economy where three municipal cities have the highest labor productivity among other regions. Analysis of Gender Wage Differential in China's Urban Labor Market
This paper estimates the gender wage gap and its composition in China's urban labor market using the 2009 survey data from the Chinese Family Panel Studies. Several estimation and decomposition methods have been used and compared. First, we examine the gender wage gap using ordinary least square regression method with a gender dummy variable. Then, we apply Oaxaca (1973) decomposition method with different weighting systems to analyze the logarithmic wage differential. To be more specific, we prove the existence of sample selection bias caused by the female's labor force participation. We eliminate it by using the Heckman's two-step procedure. Empirical results reveal that male workers generally receive a higher wage than female workers, and a great deal of this difference is unexplained. Meanwhile, this unexplained part, which is usually referred to as discrimination turns out to be higher when the adjustment is made for the selection bias. A further breakdown of the wage gap shows that among all the individual characteristics, occupations explain the largest share of the wage gap, followed by their working experience. Shape Evolution of the Interest Rate Term Structure
This paper adopts a novel approach to studying the evolution of interest rate term structure over the U.S. business cycles and to predicting recessions. Applying an effective algorithm, I classify the Treasury yield curve into distinct shapes and find the less frequent shapes intrinsically linked to the recessions in the post-WWII data. In forecasting recessions, the median-short yield spread trumps the long-short spread for horizons up to 17 months ahead and the yield curve shape is nearly impressive as the median-short spread. Overall, the yield curve shape is an informative but more succinct indicator than the spreads in studying the term structure. The Effect Of Online Customer Reviews On Customer\u27s Perceived Risk Associated With Online Leisure Hotel Booking
As online shopping is widely used in the hospitality industry, research in this field constantly strives to understand the customer behavior in online purchasing activities. Online customer reviews (OCRs) and perceived risk have been extensively evaluated in previous studies in related with online purchasing. In spite of the large body of work on the topic of OCRs effect on consumer behavior, it is still unclear that how OCRs affect the decision process of the consumers when they make online booking. Due to the intangibility of hospitality or tourism product and the nature of online booking, risk perception is considered as one of the most important factors that impact the buyer\u27s decision. Thus, it is constructive to investigate the effect of OCRs in the context of consumer perceived risk associated with online shopping, in the hope of understanding how OCRs affect the decision process and seeking solutions for the hotel marketers to improve their service as well as the online commenting system.
In this study, we demonstrated a method which investigates the relationship between consumers\u27 perceived risk associated with online leisure hotel shopping and different types of OCRs (core and peripheral). By evaluating perceived risk associated with online leisure hotel booking caused by different hotel attributes, we addressed the
importance of OCRs on various hotel attributes and therefore provided information for E-marketers to fine-tune their E-business strategies in terms of managing proper online customer reviews.
Two hundred surveys were distributed. The instrument contained two parts and one scenario: (1) Demographic information, past experience, and attitudes towards OCRs of the participants regarding online leisure hotel booking. (2) A scenario was given that the participant was planning a trip for his/herself the up-coming vocation. (3) Operational statements were used to evaluate each individual participant\u27s risk perception about his/her most recent online leisure hotel booking experience.
The findings provided exploratory insights about the dimensions of perceived risk identified in the process of online leisure hotel booking, effect of the positive and negative reviews, different OCRs had different implications for different hotel preferences and the magnitudes of OCRs effect for each dimension of perceived risk associated with online leisure hotel booking. Optical coherence tomography for retinal diagnostics
textOptical Coherence Tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive three-dimensional imaging technique. OCT synthesizes a cross-sectional image from a series of lateral adjacent depth scans, and with a two-dimensional scanning scheme, three-dimensional intensity image of sample can be constructed. Due to its non-invasive capability, OCT has been widely applied in ophthalmology, cardiology and dermatology; and in addition to three-dimensional intensity image construction, various functional OCT imaging techniques have been developed for clinical application. My research is focused on developing functional OCT systems for application in ophthalmology, including polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT) for retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) birefringence measurement and dual-wavelength photothermal optical coherence tomography (DWP-OCT) for microvasculature blood oxygen saturation (SO2) measurement. In the study, a single-mode-fiber based polarization-sensitive swept-source OCT (PS-SS-OCT) with polarization modulator, polarization-sensitive bulk-optics balanced detection module is constructed and polarization processing methods based on Stokes vectors are applied to determine birefringence. PS-OCT is able to provide human subject's RNFL thickness, phase retardation, and birefringence information. Degradation in the degree of polarization (DOP) along depth is investigated and its difference between four quadrants of RNFL (superior, temporal, inferior and nasal) indicates the structural property difference. DWP-OCT is a novel functional OCT system consisting of a phase-sensitive optical coherence tomography system (PhS-OCT) and two photothermal excitation lasers. PhS-OCT is based on a swept-source laser operating in the 1060 nm wavelength range; the two photothermal excitation lasers with wavelength 770 nm and 800 nm are intensity modulated at different frequencies. PhS-OCT probe beam and two photothermal excitation beams are combined and incident on the sample, optical pathlength (op) change on the sample introduced by two photothermal excitation beams are measured and used for blood SO2 estimation. A polarization microscope is proposed for future study. The polarization microscope is an imaging technique providing molecular structure and orientation based on probe light's polarization state information. The polarization microscope uses a wavelength tunable light source, and can achieve any incident polarization state by a retarder-rotator combination.
