The Effects of a Closed-Chain, Eccentric Training Program on Hamstring Injuries of a Professional Football Cheerleading Team
Objective Hamstring injuries are a common occurrence among professional football cheerleaders. The purpose of this study is to identify the effects of an eccentric, closed-chain hamstring exercise intervention on hamstring injury–associated pain during the course of the football season among professional football cheerleaders. Methods Forty-three female cheerleaders participated in an eccentric, closed-chain hamstring exercise intervention protocol provided by doctors of chiropractic that incorporated loops of elastic-band or Thera-Band Loops (Hygenic Corporation, Akron, OH) during practice and at home during the regular football season. Hamstring injury–related pain was assessed in June, during team selection; in September, at the start of the season; and in December, at the end of season. No intervention was applied between June and September, although the sample participated in 4 hours of practice 2 to 3 times per week. The intervention was applied to the entire sample regardless of hamstring injury–related pain during the regular football season between September and December. The interventions included 2 exercises and were completed bilaterally 2 times per week at each biweekly practice and were encouraged to be done at least 3 additional times per week at home on nonpractice days. Results Among the subsample who reported hamstring-related injury pain between June and September, the exercise intervention significantly decreased (P \u3c .007) pain between September (6.07 ± 0.58) and December (3.67 ± 0.65). Conclusions The eccentric, closed-chain hamstring exercise intervention reduced hamstring injury–related pain among this group of professional football cheerleaders

Assessment and diagnosis of Developmental Language Disorder: The experiences of speech and language therapists

Recent research suggests the disorder is not restricted to the language domain and against this background, the challenge for the practitioner is to provide accurate assessment and effective therapy. The language practitioner aims to support the child and their carers to achieve the best outcomes. However, little is known about the experiences of the language practitioner in the assessment process, in contrast to other childhood disorders, yet their expertise is central in the assessment and diagnosis of children with language disorder. Aims: This study aimed to provide a detailed qualitative description of the experiences of speech and language therapists involved in the assessment and diagnosis of children with Developmental Language Disorder. Methods & Procedures: The qualitative study included three focus groups to provide a credible and rich description of the experiences of speech and language therapists involved in the assessment of Developmental Language Disorder. The speech and language therapists who participated in the study were recruited from three NHS Trusts across the UK and all were directly involved in the assessment and diagnosis procedures. The lengths of practitioner experience ranged from 2 years to 38 years. The data was analysed using a thematic analysis in accordance with the principles set out by Braun & Clarke (2006). Outcomes & Results: The data showed a number of key themes concerning the experiences of speech and language therapists in assessing children with Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). These themes ranged from the participants’ experiences of the barriers to early referral, challenges for assessment and the concerns over continued future support. Conclusions & Implications: This study provides first-hand evidence from speech and language therapists in the assessment of children with Developmental Language Disorder, drawing together experiences from language practitioners from different regions. The findings provide insight to the barriers to referral, the potential variations in the assessment process, the role of practitioner expertise and the challenges faced them. The importance of early intervention, useful assessment tools and future support were expressed. Taken together, the results relate to some issues to be addressed on a practical level and a continuing need for initiatives to raise awareness of DLD in the public domain.Peer reviewe
Sleep Characteristics in Patients with Whiplash-Associated Disorders: A Descriptive Study
Study Objectives: The purpose of this study was to explore sleep habits and characteristics of patients with whiplash-associated disorders (WAD) presenting at an outpatient, chiropractic clinic using the Medical Outcomes Study (MOS) Sleep Scale.
Methods: Fifty-one patients from an outpatient chiropractic and physical therapy clinic specializing in spinal rehabilitation participated in this cross-sectional, descriptive study. Data were collected using a descriptive survey, the Visual Analog Scale (VAS), the Neck Disability Index (NDI), and the self-administered 12-item MOS Sleep Scale. Data analysis included descriptive statistics to describe pain, disability, and sleep characteristics of the study sample, and computation of confidence intervals to determine differences in means of sleep characteristics between the non-WAD population (as determined by previous studies) and the study sample of WAD patients.
Results: Results indicate that when compared to normative values of the non-WAD population, the sample of WAD patients in this study presents with significantly greater measures of neck disability (NDI), neck pain (VAS), sleep disturbance, snoring, shortness of breath and headache, sleep somnolence and sleep problems index I and II. This sample also presents with significantly lower measures of optimal sleep when compared to the general population.
Conclusion: Consistent with previous research, findings from this study indicate that WAD patients have increased neck disability and pain, and poorer sleep outcomes, indicating the need for clinicians to assess sleep characteristics and incorporate interventions aimed at alleviating these symptoms when planning rehabilitation. Findings provide evidence for the need to further explore sleep disturbances among WAD patients to establish a stronger understanding of the course and prognosis of this condition
A Rich Example of Geometrically Induced Nonlinearity: From Rotobreathers and Kinks to Moving Localized Modes and Resonant Energy Transfer
We present an experimentally realizable, simple mechanical system with linear
interactions whose geometric nature leads to nontrivial, nonlinear dynamical
equations. The equations of motion are derived and their ground state
structures are analyzed. Selective ``static'' features of the model are
examined in the context of nonlinear waves including rotobreathers and
kink-like solitary waves. We also explore ``dynamic'' features of the model
concerning the resonant transfer of energy and the role of moving intrinsic
localized modes in the process
Influence of quantum fluctuations on zero-temperature phase transitions between collinear and noncollinear states in frustrated spin systems
We study a square-lattice spin-half Heisenberg model where frustration is
introduced by competing nearest-neighbor bonds of different signs. We discuss
the influence of quantum fluctuations on the nature of the zero-temperature
phase transitions from phases with collinear magnetic order at small
frustration to phases with noncollinear spiral order at large frustration. We
use the coupled cluster method (CCM) for high orders of approximation (up to
LSUB6) and the exact diagonalization of finite systems (up to 32 sites) to
calculate ground-state properties. The role of quantum fluctuations is examined
by comparing the ferromagnetic-spiral and the antiferromagnetic-spiral
transition within the same model. We find clear evidence that quantum
fluctuations prefer collinear order and that they may favour a first order
transition instead of a second order transition in case of no quantum

Instability of the Two-Dimensional Metallic Phase to Parallel Magnetic Field
We report on magnetotransport studies of the unusual two-dimensional metallic
phase in high mobility Si-MOS structures. We have observed that the magnetic
field applied in the 2D plane suppresses the metallic state, causing the
resistivity to increase dramatically by more than 30 times. Over the total
existence range of the metallic state, we have found three distinct types of
the magnetoresistance, related to the corresponding quantum corrections to the
conductivity. Our data suggest that the unusual metallic state is a consequence

Nonlinear Lattices Generated from Harmonic Lattices with Geometric Constraints
Geometrical constraints imposed on higher dimensional harmonic lattices
generally lead to nonlinear dynamical lattice models. Helical lattices obtained
by such a procedure are shown to be described by sine- plus linear-lattice
equations. The interplay between sinusoidal and quadratic potential terms in
such models is shown to yield localized nonlinear modes identified as intrinsic
resonant modes
