The Extended Coupled Cluster Treatment of Correlations in Quantum Magnets
The spin-half XXZ model on the linear chain and the square lattice are
examined with the extended coupled cluster method (ECCM) of quantum many-body
theory. We are able to describe both the Ising-Heisenberg phase and the
XY-Heisenberg phase, starting from known wave functions in the Ising limit and
at the phase transition point between the XY-Heisenberg and ferromagnetic
phases, respectively, and by systematically incorporating correlations on top
of them. The ECCM yields good numerical results via a diagrammatic approach,
which makes the numerical implementation of higher-order truncation schemes
feasible. In particular, the best non-extrapolated coupled cluster result for
the sublattice magnetization is obtained, which indicates the employment of an
improved wave function. Furthermore, the ECCM finds the expected qualitatively
different behaviours of the linear chain and the square lattice cases.Comment: 22 pages, 3 tables, and 15 figure

Aspects of the Release of Superoxide by Leukocytes, and a Means by Which This Is Switched Off
Although great progress has been made in understanding the respiratory burst of leukocytes that produce superoxide (O2-), it is possible that a component or components, might have been overlooked. Furthermore, O2- production and its sequels, though cardinal in bactericidal action, might ultimately be damaging to the host's own cells. It is important, therefore, that a biologic mechanism exist to turn off O2- production by stimulated leukocytes. This article offers evidence that methoxatin (PQQ), a redox-cycling orthoquinone, might be involved in O2- production by leukocytes. This is based on the fact that inhibitors of O2- production, such as diphenylene iodonium (DPI) and 4,5-dimethylphenylene diamine (DIMPDA), were shown to sequester PQQ in leukocytes, i.e., to form adducts with that substance. Addition of PQQ to cells blocked with the inhibitors partially restored O2- release. With respect to turning off cellular O2- release, a factor was observed to be released to the medium by old macrophages (14 days old, but not by those less than 7 days old). Such conditioned medium, when added to stimulated neutrophils or macrophages, blocked O2- release. This factor was sensitive to proteases, exhibited molecular sizes of 3 and 11 kDa, and its action was independent of the nature of the stimulus applied to the leukocytes. It was partially purified by column (sizing) chromatography and HPLC. It seems to be a general modulator of the release of reactive oxygen species by phagocytes and is irrespective of phagocytic cellular type, or species from which the cells were derived

Zombie Mouse in a Chinese Room
John Searle’s Chinese Room Argument (CRA) purports to demonstrate that syntax is not sufficient for semantics, and, hence, because computation cannot yield understanding, the computational theory of mind, which equates the mind to an information processing system based on formal computations, fails. In this paper, we use the CRA, and the debate that emerged from it, to develop a philosophical critique of recent advances in robotics and neuroscience. We describe results from a body of work that contributes to blurring the divide between biological and artificial systems; so-called animats, autonomous robots that are controlled by biological neural tissue and what may be described as remote- controlled rodents, living animals endowed with augmented abilities provided by external controllers. We argue that, even though at first sight, these chimeric systems may seem to escape the CRA, on closer analysis, they do not. We conclude by discussing the role of the body–brain dynamics in the processes that give rise to genuine understanding of the world, in line with recent proposals from enactive cognitive science
SU(N) Antiferromagnets and Strongly Coupled QED: Effective Field Theory for Josephson Junctions Arrays
We review our analysis of the strong coupling of compact QED on a lattice
with staggered Fermions. We show that, for infinite coupling, compact QED is
exactly mapped in a quantum antiferromagnet. We discuss some aspects of this
correspondence relevant for effective field theories of Josephson junctions

Heritability of specific language impairment depends on diagnostic criteria
Heritability estimates for specific language impairment (SLI) have been inconsistent. Four twin studies reported heritability of 0.5 or more, but a recent report from the Twins Early Development Study found negligible genetic influence in 4-year-olds. We considered whether the method of ascertainment influenced results and found substantially higher heritability if SLI was defined in terms of referral to speech and language pathology services than if defined by language test scores. Further analysis showed that presence of speech difficulties played a major role in determining whether a child had contact with services. Childhood language disorders that are identified by population screening are likely to have a different phenotype and different etiology from clinically referred cases. Genetic studies are more likely to find high heritability if they focus on cases who have speech difficulties and who have been referred for intervention

Bayesian classification of vegetation types with Gaussian mixture density fitting to indicator values.
Question: Is it possible to mathematically classify relevés into vegetation types on the basis of their average indicator values, including the uncertainty of the classification? Location: The Netherlands. Method: A large relevé database was used to develop a method for predicting vegetation types based on indicator values. First, each relevé was classified into a phytosociological association on the basis of its species composition. Additionally, mean indicator values for moisture, nutrients and acidity were computed for each relevé. Thus, the position of each classified relevé was obtained in a three-dimensional space of indicator values. Fitting the data to so called Gaussian Mixture Models yielded densities of associations as a function of indicator values. Finally, these density functions were used to predict the Bayesian occurrence probabilities of associations for known indicator values. Validation of predictions was performed by using a randomly chosen half of the database for the calibration of densities and the other half for the validation of predicted associations. Results and Conclusions: With indicator values, most relevés were classified correctly into vegetation types at the association level. This was shown using confusion matrices that relate (1) the number of relevés classified into associations based on species composition to (2) those based on indicator values. Misclassified relevés belonged to ecologically similar associations. The method seems very suitable for predictive vegetation models

VERTIGO (VERtical Transport In the Global Ocean) : a study of particle sources and flux attenuation in the North Pacific

fluxes through the ocean’s “twilight zone” (defined here as depths below the euphotic zone to
1000 m). Interdisciplinary process studies were conducted at contrasting sites off Hawaii
(ALOHA) and in the NW Pacific (K2) during 3 week occupations in 2004 and 2005, respectively.
We examine in this overview paper the contrasting physical, chemical and biological settings and
how these conditions impact the source characteristics of the sinking material and the transport
efficiency through the twilight zone. A major finding in VERTIGO is the considerably lower
transfer efficiency (Teff) of particulate organic carbon (POC), POC flux 500 / 150 m, at ALOHA
(20%) vs. K2 (50%). This efficiency is higher in the diatom-dominated setting at K2 where
silica-rich particles dominate the flux at the end of a diatom bloom, and where zooplankton and
their pellets are larger. At K2, the drawdown of macronutrients is used to assess export and
suggests that shallow remineralization above our 150 m trap is significant, especially for N
relative to Si. We explore here also surface export ratios (POC flux/primary production) and
possible reasons why this ratio is higher at K2, especially during the first trap deployment. When
we compare the 500 m fluxes to deep moored traps, both sites lose about half of the sinking POC
by >4000 m, but this comparison is limited in that fluxes at depth may have both a local and
distant component. Certainly, the greatest difference in particle flux attenuation is in the
mesopelagic, and we highlight other VERTIGO papers that provide a more detailed examination
of the particle sources, flux and processes that attenuate the flux of sinking particles. Ultimately,
we contend that at least three types of processes need to be considered: heterotrophic degradation
of sinking particles, zooplankton migration and surface feeding, and lateral sources of suspended
and sinking materials. We have evidence that all of these processes impacted the net attenuation
of particle flux vs. depth measured in VERTIGO and would therefore need to be considered and
quantified in order to understand the magnitude and efficiency of the ocean’s biological pump.Funding for VERTIGO was provided primarily by research grants
