Overcoming the Limitations of an Urban Setting Through Field-based Earth Systems Inquiry
Disconnection between students and nature in an urban setting thwarts student engagement and impedes geoscience teaching and learning. Conducting field trips is one way to engage students, but the urban environment does not provide an ideal setting with respect to the availability of appropriate field sites and safety. This text reports on a field-based inquiry project conducted in San Antonio, Texas. The project focused on Earth systems and system interactions, attempting to overcome the obstacles imposed by the urban environment by permitting teachers to focus on student observations and student initiated research questions rather than solely being limited to the use of text and laboratory activities. [Review of] Fred L. Gardaphe, Italian Signs, American Streets: The Evolution of Italian American Narrative
This indispensable interpretation of Italian American narrative literature can fruitfully be used in many ethnic and cultural programs. It is a study distinguished by familiarity with vernacular Italian American culture, as well as consciousness of the losses as well as gains in education in the dominant WASP culture. Trying to reconcile the difference between what Antonio Gramsci called the organic intellectual and the assimilated intellectual, Gardaphe has adopted a culture-specific criticism that is sensitive to both Italian and American cultures
Infrared spectroscopic measurements and analysis
The collision induced spectrum in equilibrium H2(eH2) and in equilibrium H2-He mixtures have been determined at densities below 120 amagat in the region 500 to 900 cm/1 at 293, 195, and 77K. The collision induced spectrum of normal H2 at 77K in the region 25 to 490 cm/1 has also been determined. The details of the experiment, experimental results, and comparison with previous results are presented. A report dealing with a new theory of the shape of pressure induced spectra with an application to the far infrared spectrum of eH2 at 77K is appended
Cavity QED with Multiple Hyperfine Levels
We calculate the weak-driving transmission of a linearly polarized cavity
mode strongly coupled to the D2 transition of a single Cesium atom. Results are
relevant to future experiments with microtoroid cavities, where the
single-photon Rabi frequency g exceeds the excited-state hyperfine splittings,
and photonic bandgap resonators, where g is greater than both the excited- and
ground-state splitting.Comment: 6 pages, 10 figure
Metallized polymeric foam material
Open-celled polyurethane foams can be coated uniformly with thin film of metal by vapor deposition of aluminum or by sensitization of foam followed by electroless deposition of nickel or copper. Foam can be further processed to increase thickness of metal overcoat to impart rigidity or to provide inert surface with only modest increase in weight
