Linear response results for phonons and electron-phonon coupling in hcp Sc - spin fluctuations and implications for superconductivity
We present a study of the electronic structure, phonon frequencies and
electron-phonon coupling in hcp Sc under pressure. The electron-phonon coupling
constant is found to increase steadily with pressure in the hcp phase, until
the pressure reaches a value where the hcp phase becomes unstable. Calculations
for the normal pressure ratio predict a phase change somewhere between
calculated pressures of 22 and 30 GPa. The calculated frequencies for the
equilibrium hcp lattice parameters are in good agreement with the inelastic
neutron scattering results. From the measured value of the electronic specific
heat constant and the calculated values of the Fermi level density of states
and electron-phonon coupling constant, we conclude that the electron-paramagnon
coupling constant in hcp Sc should be comparable to the electron-phonon
coupling constant. This indicates that the spin fluctuation effects are strong
enough to suppress superconductivity completely in hcp Sc. Based on estimates
of the electron-paramagnon coupling constants and the calculated or estimated
electron-phonon coupling constants, we argue that the hcp phase may become
superconducting with a very low transition temperature immediately prior to the
transition to the Sc-II phase and that the Sc-II phase should indeed be

Pressure Dependence of the Elastic Moduli in Aluminum Rich Al-Li Compounds
I have carried out numerical first principles calculations of the pressure
dependence of the elastic moduli for several ordered structures in the
Aluminum-Lithium system, specifically FCC Al, FCC and BCC Li, L1_2 Al_3Li, and
an ordered FCC Al_7Li supercell. The calculations were performed using the full
potential linear augmented plane wave method (LAPW) to calculate the total
energy as a function of strain, after which the data was fit to a polynomial
function of the strain to determine the modulus. A procedure for estimating the
errors in this process is also given. The predicted equilibrium lattice
parameters are slightly smaller than found experimentally, consistent with
other LDA calculations. The computed elastic moduli are within approximately
10% of the experimentally measured moduli, provided the calculations are
carried out at the experimental lattice constant. The LDA equilibrium shear
modulus C11-C12 increases from 59.3 GPa in Al, to 76.0 GPa in Al_7Li, to 106.2
GPa in Al_3Li. The modulus C_44 increases from 38.4 GPa in Al to 46.1 GPa in
Al_7Li, then falls to 40.7 GPa in Al_3Li. All of the calculated elastic moduli
increase with pressure with the exception of BCC Li, which becomes elastically
unstable at about 2 GPa, where C_11-C_12 vanishes.Comment: 17 pages (REVTEX) + 7 postscript figure
Pressure-dependence of electron-phonon coupling and the superconducting phase in hcp Fe - a linear response study
A recent experiment by Shimizu et al. has provided evidence of a
superconducting phase in hcp Fe under pressure. To study the
pressure-dependence of this superconducting phase we have calculated the phonon
frequencies and the electron-phonon coupling in hcp Fe as a function of the
lattice parameter, using the linear response (LR) scheme and the full potential
linear muffin-tin orbital (FP-LMTO) method. Calculated phonon spectra and the
Eliashberg functions indicate that conventional s-wave
electron-phonon coupling can definitely account for the appearance of the
superconducting phase in hcp Fe. However, the observed change in the transition
temperature with increasing pressure is far too rapid compared with the
calculated results. For comparison with the linear response results, we have
computed the electron-phonon coupling also by using the rigid muffin-tin (RMT)
approximation. From both the LR and the RMT results it appears that
electron-phonon interaction alone cannot explain the small range of volume over
which superconductivity is observed. It is shown that
ferromagnetic/antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations as well as scattering from
magnetic impurities (spin-ordered clusters) can account for the observed values
of the transition temperatures but cannot substantially improve the agreeemnt
between the calculated and observed presure/volume range of the superconducting
phase. A simplified treatment of p-wave pairing leads to extremely small ( K) transition temperatures. Thus our calculations seem to rule out
both - and - wave superconductivity in hcp Fe.Comment: 12 pages, submitted to PR
First principles elastic constants and electronic structure of alpha-Pt_2Si and PtSi
We have carried out a first principles study of the elastic properties and
electronic structure for two room-temperature stable Pt silicide phases,
tetragonal alpha-Pt_2Si and orthorhombic PtSi. We have calculated all of the
equilibrium structural parameters for both phases: the a and c lattice
constants for alpha-Pt_2Si and the a, b, and c lattice constants and four
internal structural parameters for PtSi. These results agree closely with
experimental data. We have also calculated the zero-pressure elastic constants,
confirming prior results for pure Pt and Si and predicting values for the six
(nine) independent, non-zero elastic constants of alpha-Pt_2Si (PtSi). These
calculations include a full treatment of all relevant internal displacements
induced by the elastic strains, including an explicit determination of the
dimensionless internal displacement parameters for the three strains in
alpha-Pt_2Si for which they are non-zero. We have analyzed the trends in the
calculated elastic constants, both within a given material as well as between
the two silicides and the pure Pt and Si phases. The calculated electronic
structure confirms that the two silicides are poor metals with a low density of
states at the Fermi level, and consequently we expect that the Drude component
of the optical absorption will be much smaller than in good metals such as pure
Pt. This observation, combined with the topology found in the first principles
spin-orbit split band structure, suggests that it may be important to include
the interband contribution to the optical absorption, even in the infrared

Relative energetics and structural properties of zirconia using a self-consistent tight-binding model
We describe an empirical, self-consistent, orthogonal tight-binding model for
zirconia, which allows for the polarizability of the anions at dipole and
quadrupole levels and for crystal field splitting of the cation d orbitals.
This is achieved by mixing the orbitals of different symmetry on a site with
coupling coefficients driven by the Coulomb potentials up to octapole level.
The additional forces on atoms due to the self-consistency and polarizabilities
are exactly obtained by straightforward electrostatics, by analogy with the
Hellmann-Feynman theorem as applied in first-principles calculations. The model
correctly orders the zero temperature energies of all zirconia polymorphs. The
Zr-O matrix elements of the Hamiltonian, which measure covalency, make a
greater contribution than the polarizability to the energy differences between
phases. Results for elastic constants of the cubic and tetragonal phases and
phonon frequencies of the cubic phase are also presented and compared with some
experimental data and first-principles calculations. We suggest that the model
will be useful for studying finite temperature effects by means of molecular

An evaluation of access to health care services along the rural-urban continuum in Canada
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Studies comparing the access to health care of rural and urban populations have been contradictory and inconclusive. These studies are complicated by the influence of other factor which have been shown to be related to access and utilization. This study assesses the equity of access to health care services across the rural-urban continuum in Canada before and after taking other determinants of access into account.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This is a cross-sectional study of the population of the 10 provinces of Canada using data from the Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS 2.1). Five different measures of access and utilization are compared across the continuum of rural-urban. Known determinants of utilization are taken into account according to Andersen's Health Behaviour Model (HBM); location of residence at the levels of province, health region, and community is also controlled for.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>This study found that residents of small cities not adjacent to major centres, had the highest reported utilisation rates of influenza vaccines and family physician services, were most likely to have a regular medical doctor, and were most likely to report unmet need. Among the rural categories there was a gradient with the most rural being least likely to have had a flu shot, use specialist physicians services, or have a regular medical doctor. Residents of the most urban centres were more likely to report using specialist physician services. Many of these differences are diminished or eliminated once other factors are accounted for. After adjusting for other factors those living in the most urban areas were more likely to have seen a specialist physician. Those in rural communities had a lower odds of receiving a flu shot and having a regular medical doctor. People residing in the most urban and most rural communities were less likely to have a regular medical doctor. Those in any of the rural categories were less likely to report unmet need.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Inequities in access to care along the rural-urban continuum exist and can be masked when evaluation is done at a very large scale with gross indicators of rural-urban. Understanding the relationship between rural-urban and other determinants will help policy makers to target interventions appropriately: to specific demographic, provincial, community, or rural categories.</p
Family and Early Life Factors Associated With Changes in Overweight Status Between Ages 5 and 14 Years: Findings From The Mater University Study Of Pregnancy and its Outcomes
Objective To describe different patterns of overweight status between ages 5 and 14 y and examine the role of modifiable family and early life characteristics in explaining different patterns of change between these two ages. Design A population-based prospective birth cohort. Subjects A total of 2934 children (52% males) who were participants in the Mater-University study of pregnancy, Brisbane, and who were examined at ages 5 and 14 y. Main outcome measures Four patterns of change in overweight/obesity status between ages 5 and 14 y: (i) normal at both ages; (ii) normal at 5 y and overweight/obese at 14 y; (iii) overweight/obese at 5 y and normal at 14 y; (iv) overweight/obese at both ages. Results Of the 2934 participants, 2018 (68.8%) had a normal body mass index (BMI) at ages 5 and 14 y, 425 (14.5%) changed from a normal BMI at age 5 y to overweight or obese at age 14 y, 175 (6.0%) changed from being overweight or obese at age 5 y to normal weight at age 14 y and 316 (10.8%) were overweight or obese at both ages 5 and 14 y. Girls were more likely to make the transition from overweight or obese at age 5 y to normal at 14 y than their boy counterparts. Children whose parents were overweight or obese were more likely to change from having a normal BMI at age 5 y to being overweight at 14 y (fully adjusted RR: 6.17 (95% CI: 3.97, 9.59)) and were more likely to be overweight at both ages (7.44 (95% CI: 4.60, 12.02)). Birth weight and increase in weight over the first 6 months of life were both positively associated with being overweight at both ages. Other explanatory factors were not associated with the different overweight status transitions. Conclusions Parental overweight status is an important determinant of whether a child is overweight at either stage or changes from being not overweight at 5 y to becoming so at 14 y
Air pollution and general practitioner access and utilization: a population based study in Sarnia, 'Chemical Valley,' Ontario
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Health impacts of poor environmental quality have been identified in studies around the world and in Canada. While many of the studies have identified associations between air pollution and mortality or morbidity, few have focused on the role of health care as a potential moderator of impacts. This study assessed the determinants of health care access and utilization in the context of ambient air pollution in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Residents of Sarnia participated in a Community Health Study administered by phone, while several ambient air pollutants including nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>), sulphur dioxide (SO<sub>2</sub>) and the volatile organic compounds benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, mp- and o-xylene (BTEX) were monitored across the city. Land Use Regression models were used to estimate individual exposures to the measured pollutants and logistic regression models were utilized to assess the relative influence of environmental, socioeconomic and health related covariates on general practitioner access and utilization outcomes.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The results show that general practitioner use increased with levels of exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2</sub>- Odds Ratio [OR]: 1.16, <it>p </it>< 0.05) and sulphur dioxide (SO<sub>2</sub>- OR: 1.61, <it>p </it>< 0.05). Low household income was a stronger predictor of having no family doctor in areas exposed to high concentrations of NO<sub>2 </sub>and SO<sub>2</sub>. Respondents without regular care living in high pollution areas were also more likely to report travelling or waiting for care in excess of 20 minutes (OR: 3.28, <it>p </it>< 0.05) than their low exposure counterparts (OR: 1.11, <it>p </it>> 0.05).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study provides evidence for inequitable health care access and utilization in Sarnia, with particular relevance to its situation as a sentinel high exposure environment. Levels of exposure to pollution appears to influence utilization of health care services, but poor access to primary health care services additionally burden certain groups in Sarnia, Ontario, Canada.</p
