Obtaining pressure versus concentration phase diagrams in spin systems from Monte Carlo simulations
We propose an efficient procedure for determining phase diagrams of systems
that are described by spin models. It consists of combining cluster algorithms
with the method proposed by Sauerwein and de Oliveira where the grand canonical
potential is obtained directly from the Monte Carlo simulation, without the
necessity of performing numerical integrations. The cluster algorithm presented
in this paper eliminates metastability in first order phase transitions
allowing us to locate precisely the first-order transitions lines. We also
produce a different technique for calculating the thermodynamic limit of
quantities such as the magnetization whose infinite volume limit is not
straightforward in first order phase transitions. As an application, we study
the Andelman model for Langmuir monolayers made of chiral molecules that is
equivalent to the Blume-Emery-Griffiths spin-1 model. We have obtained the
phase diagrams in the case where the intermolecular forces favor interactions
between enantiomers of the same type (homochiral interactions). In particular,
we have determined diagrams in the surface pressure versus concentration plane
which are more relevant from the experimental point of view and less usual in
numerical studies
Spin transport in magnetic multilayers
We study by extensive Monte Carlo simulations the transport of itinerant
spins travelling inside a multilayer composed of three ferromagnetic films
antiferromagnetically coupled to each other in a sandwich structure. The two
exterior films interact with the middle one through non magnetic spacers. The
spin model is the Ising one and the in-plane transport is considered. Various
interactions are taken into account. We show that the current of the itinerant
spins going through this system depends strongly on the magnetic ordering of
the multilayer: at temperatures below (above) the transition temperature
, a strong (weak) current is observed. This results in a strong jump of
the resistance across . Moreover, we observe an anomalous variation,
namely a peak, of the spin current in the critical region just above . We
show that this peak is due to the formation of domains in the temperature
region between the low- ordered phase and the true paramagnetic disordered
phase. The existence of such domains is known in the theory of critical
phenomena. The behavior of the resistance obtained here is compared to a recent
experiment. An excellent agreement with our physical interpretation is
observed. We also show and discuss effects of various physical parameters
entering our model such as interaction range, strength of electric and magnetic
fields and magnetic film and non magnetic spacer thicknesses.Comment: 8 pages, 17 figures, submitted to J. Phys.: Cond Matte
Macroeconometric Modelling with a Global Perspective
This paper provides a synthesis and further development of a global modelling approach introduced in Pesaran, Schuermann and Weiner (2004), where country specific models in the form of VARX* structures are estimated relating a vector of domestic variables to their foreign counterparts and then consistently combined to form a Global VAR (GVAR). It is shown that VARX* models can be derived as the solution to a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) model where over-identifying long-run theoretical relations can be tested and imposed if acceptable. Similarly, short-run over-identifying theoretical restrictions can be tested and imposed if accepted. The assumption of the weak exogeneity of the foreign variables for the long-run parameters can be tested, where foreign variables can be interpreted as proxies for global factors. Rather than using deviations from ad hoc statistical trends, the equilibrium values of the variables reflecting the long-run theory embodied in the model can be calculated
Coupled Fluctuations near Critical Wetting
Recent work on the complete wetting transition has emphasized the role played
by the coupling of fluctuations of the order parameter at the wall and at the
depinning fluid interface. Extending this approach to the wetting transition
itself we predict a novel crossover effect associated with the decoupling of
fluctuations as the temperature is lowered towards the transition temperature
T_W. Using this we are able to reanalyse recent Monte-Carlo simulation studies
and extract a value \omega(T_W)=0.8 at T_W=0.9T_C in very good agreement with
long standing theoretical predictions.Comment: 4 pages, LaTex, 1 postscript figur
Parametric ordering of complex systems
Cellular automata (CA) dynamics are ordered in terms of two global
parameters, computable {\sl a priori} from the description of rules. While one
of them (activity) has been used before, the second one is new; it estimates
the average sensitivity of rules to small configurational changes. For two
well-known families of rules, the Wolfram complexity Classes cluster
satisfactorily. The observed simultaneous occurrence of sharp and smooth
transitions from ordered to disordered dynamics in CA can be explained with the
two-parameter diagram
Short-time critical dynamics at perfect and non-perfect surface
We report Monte Carlo simulations of critical dynamics far from equilibrium
on a perfect and non-perfect surface in the 3d Ising model. For an ordered
initial state, the dynamic relaxation of the surface magnetization, the line
magnetization of the defect line, and the corresponding susceptibilities and
appropriate cumulant is carefully examined at the ordinary, special and surface
phase transitions. The universal dynamic scaling behavior including a dynamic
crossover scaling form is identified. The exponent of the surface
magnetization and of the line magnetization are extracted. The impact
of the defect line on the surface universality classes is investigated.Comment: 11figure
Relevance of soft modes for order parameter fluctuations in the Two-Dimensional XY model
We analyse the spin wave approximation for the 2D-XY model, directly in
reciprocal space. In this limit the model is diagonal and the normal modes are
statistically independent. Despite this simplicity non-trivial critical
properties are observed and exploited. We confirm that the observed asymmetry
for the probability density function for order parameter fluctuations comes
from the divergence of the mode amplitudes across the Brillouin zone. We show
that the asymmetry is a many body effect despite the importance played by the
zone centre. The precise form of the function is dependent on the details of
the Gibbs measure, giving weight to the idea that an effective Gibbs measure
should exist in non-equilibrium systems, if a similar distribution is observed.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figure
