    An Omental Teratoma in a Young Girl

    Teratoma is the most commonly encountered germ cell tumour among the most common ovarian tumours; however, teratomas of the omentum and mesentery are extremely rare. They are usually asymptomatic or can produce compressive symptoms. The imaging features are suggestive. The present report describes such a case of primary omental teratoma encountered in a young patient, which was managed by surgical resection. The histopathological examination confirmed the diagnosis of mature cystic teratoma. Germ cell tumors are congenital tumors containing derivatives of all the three germinal layers, frequently seen in gonads. But their occurrence in extragonadal sites, such as omental teratoma, is relatively rare

The variety of objects found self-inserted is impressive. The patient usually presents with dysuria, poor urinary stream or retention, bloody or purulent urethral discharge, ascending urinary tract infection, urgency, and/or pelvic pain. Management should be tailored according to the nature and dimensions of the foreign body.     Rural Centre Based Management of the Carotid Body Tumour

    A 40 year old male patient reported to our rural based hospital with a complaint of discomfort associated with a swelling on the left side of the neck since 8 years. A provisional diagnosis of a carotid body tumour was made based on clinical examination and ultrasound examination. Higher investigations could not be performed due to unavailability at the rural setup and referral to a specialty centre was not possible due to financial constraints of the patient. Even with advances in diagnostic and surgical techniques, surgery still presents a major threat of injury to the cranial nerves. Nevertheless, it remains the preferred method of treatment for these tumours. Our case shows that such masses can be removed successfully and that, with care, the cranial nerves and the carotid arteries can be preserved at the rural hospital

    A novel parthenin analog exhibits anti-cancer activity: Activation of apoptotic signaling events through robust NO formation in human leukemia HL-60 cells

    This study describes the anti-cancer activity of P19, an analog of parthenin. P19 induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells and inhibited cell proliferation with 48 h IC50 of 3.5 lM. At 10 mg/kg dose, it doubled the median survival time of L1210 leukemic mice and at 25 mg/kg it inhibited Ehrlich ascites tumor growth by 60%.Investigation of the mechanism of P19 induced apoptosis in HL-60 cells revealed that N-acetyl-L-cysteine(NAC) and s-methylisothiourea (sMIT) could reverse several molecular events that lead to cell death by inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) formation. It selectively produced massive NO in cells while quenching the basal ROS levels with concurrent elevation of GSH. P19 disrupted mitochondrial integrity leading to cytochrome c release and caspase-9 activation. P19 also caused caspase-8 activation by selectively elevating the expression of DR4 and DR5. All these events lead to the activation of caspase-3 leading to PARP-1 cleavage and DNA fragmentation. However, knocking down of AIF by siRNA also suppressed the apoptosis substantially thus indicating caspase independent apoptosis, too. Further, contrary to enhanced iNOS expression, its transcription factor, NF-jB (p65) was cleaved with a simultaneous increase in cytosolic IjB-alpha. In addition, P19 potently inhibited pro-survival proteins pSTAT3 and survivin. The multimodal pro-apoptotic activity of P19 raises its potential usefulness as a promising anti-cancer therapeutic

    Not AvailableBovine tropical theileriosis is an important haemoprotozoan disease associated with high rates of morbidity and mortality particularly in exotic and crossbred cattle. It is one of the major constraints of the livestock development programmes in India and Southeast Asia. Indigenous cattle (Bos indicus) are reported to be comparatively less affected than exotic and crossbred cattle. However, genetic basis of resistance to tropical theileriosis in indigenous cattle is not well documented. Recent studies incited an idea that differentially expressed genes in exotic and indigenous cattle play significant role in breed specific resistance to tropical theileriosis. The present study was designed to determine the global gene expression profile in peripheral blood mononuclear cells derived from indigenous (Tharparkar) and cross-bred cattle following in vitro infection of T. annulata (Parbhani strain). Two separate microarray experiments were carried out each for cross-bred and Tharparkar cattle. The crossbred cattle showed 1082 differentially expressed genes (DEGs). Out of total DEGs, 597 genes were down-regulated and 485 were up-regulated. Their fold change varied from 2283.93 to −4816.02. Tharparkar cattle showed 875 differentially expressed genes including 451 down-regulated and 424 up-regulated. The fold change varied from 94.93 to −19.20. A subset of genes was validated by qRT-PCR and results were correlated well with microarray data indicating that microarray results provided an accurate report of transcript level. Functional annotation study of DEGs confirmed their involvement in various pathways including response to oxidative stress, immune system regulation, cell proliferation, cytoskeletal changes, kinases activity and apoptosis. Gene network analysis of these DEGs plays an important role to understand the interaction among genes. It is therefore, hypothesized that the different susceptibility to tropical theileriosis exhibited by indigenous and crossbred cattle is due to breed-specific differences in the dealing of infected cells with other immune cells, which ultimately influence the immune response responded against T. annulata infectionNot Availabl
