Nonlinear Magnetohydrodynamics from Gravity
We apply the recently established connection between nonlinear fluid dynamics
and AdS gravity to the case of the dyonic black brane in AdS_4. This yields the
equations of fluid dynamics for a 2+1 dimensional charged fluid in a background
magnetic field. We construct the gravity solution to second order in the
derivative expansion. From this we find the fluid dynamical stress tensor and
charge current to second and third order in derivatives respectively, along
with values for the associated transport coefficients.Comment: 20 pages. v3: Added section 2.3 on comparison to other approaches and

S-duality in AdS/CFT magnetohydrodynamics
We study the nonlinear hydrodynamics of a 2+1 dimensional charged conformal
fluid subject to slowly varying external electric and magnetic fields.
Following recent work on deriving nonlinear hydrodynamics from gravity, we
demonstrate how long wavelength perturbations of the AdS dyonic black brane
solution of 4D supergravity are governed by equations equivalent to fluid
dynamics equations in the boundary theory. We investigate the implications of
-duality for our system, and derive restrictions imposed on the transport
coefficients of a generic fluid invariant under the S operation. We also expand
on our earlier work and determine a new set of previously undetermined
transport coefficients for the conformal fluid with an AdS gravity dual. Quite
surprisingly, we discover that half of the transport coefficients allowed by
symmetry vanish in the holographic fluid at linear order in the hydrodynamic
expansion.Comment: 25 page
Gauge/Gravity Duality and Some Applications
We discuss the AdS/CFT correspondence in which space-time emerges from an
interacting theory of D-branes and open strings. These ideas have a historical
continuity with QCD which is an interacting theory of quarks and gluons. In
particular we review the classic case of D3 branes and the non-conformal D1
brane system. We outline by some illustrative examples the calculations that
are enabled in a strongly coupled gauge theory by correspondence with dynamical
horizons in semi-classical gravity in one higher dimension. We also discuss
implications of the gauge-fluid/gravity correspondence for the information
paradox of black hole physics.Comment: 19 pages, 2 figures, Contribution to "Conference in Honor of Murray

Constraints on Fluid Dynamics from Equilibrium Partition Functions
We study the thermal partition function of quantum field theories on
arbitrary stationary background spacetime, and with arbitrary stationary
background gauge fields, in the long wavelength expansion. We demonstrate that
the equations of relativistic hydrodynamics are significantly constrained by
the requirement of consistency with any partition function. In examples at low
orders in the derivative expansion we demonstrate that these constraints
coincide precisely with the equalities between hydrodynamical transport
coefficients that follow from the local form of the second law of
thermodynamics. In particular we recover the results of Son and Surowka on the
chiral magnetic and chiral vorticity flows, starting from a local partition
function that manifestly reproduces the field theory anomaly, without making
any reference to an entropy current. We conjecture that the relations between
transport coefficients that follow from the second law of thermodynamics agree
to all orders in the derivative expansion with the constraints described in
this paper.Comment: Typos corrected, References adde
Energy dependent wavelength of the ion induced nanoscale ripple
Wavelength variation of ion beam induced nanoscale ripple structure has
received much attention recently due to its possible application in
nanotechnology. We present here results of Ar bombarded Si in the energy
range 50 to 140 keV to demonstrate that with beam scanning the ripple
wavelength increases with ion energy and decreases with energy for irradiation
without ion beam scanning. An expression for the energy dependence of ripple
wavelength is proposed taking into simultaneous effect of thermally activated
surface diffusion and ion induced effective surface diffusion.Comment: REVTeX (4 pages), 3 EPS figure
A Non-supersymmetric Interpretation of the CDF e+e-\gamma\gamma + missing E_T Event
The \eegg event reported recently by the CDF Collaboration has been
interpreted as a signal of supersymmetry in several recent papers. In this
article, we report on an alternative non-supersymmetric interpretation of the
event using an extension of the standard model which contains new physics at
the electroweak scale that does not effect the existing precision electroweak
data. We extend the standard model by including an extra sequential generation
of fermions, heavy right-handed neutrinos for all generations and an extra
singly charged SU(2)-singlet Higgs boson. We discuss possible ways to
discriminate this from the standard supersymemtric interpretations.Comment: 7 pages, Latex, no figure
Phase diagram for non-axisymmetric plasma balls
Plasma balls and rings emerge as fluid holographic duals of black holes and
black rings in the hydrodynamic/gravity correspondence for the Scherk-Schwarz
AdS system. Recently, plasma balls spinning above a critical rotation were
found to be unstable against m-lobed perturbations. In the phase diagram of
stationary solutions the threshold of the instability signals a bifurcation to
a new phase of non-axisymmetric configurations. We find explicitly this family
of solutions and represent them in the phase diagram. We discuss the
implications of our results for the gravitational system. Rotating
non-axisymmetric black holes necessarily radiate gravitational waves. We thus
emphasize that it would be important, albeit possibly out of present reach, to
have a better understanding of the hydrodynamic description of gravitational
waves and of the gravitational interaction between two bodies. We also argue
that it might well be that a non-axisymmetric m-lobed instability is also
present in Myers-Perry black holes for rotations below the recently found
ultraspinning instability.Comment: 1+22 pages, 3 figures. v2: minor corrections and improvements,

Fluid dynamics of R-charged black holes
We construct electrically charged AdS_5 black hole solutions whose charge,
mass and boost-parameters vary slowly with the space-time coordinates. From the
perspective of the dual theory, these are equivalent to hydrodynamic
configurations with varying chemical potential, temperature and velocity
fields. We compute the boundary theory transport coefficients associated with a
derivative expansion of the energy momentum tensor and R-charge current up to
second order. In particular, we find a first order transport coefficient
associated with the axial component of the current.Comment: 31 pages, v2: published version; added some references, discussion of

On Time-dependent Collapsing Branes and Fuzzy Odd-dimensional Spheres
We study the time-dependent dynamics of a collection of N
collapsing/expanding D0-branes in type IIA String Theory. We show that the
fuzzy-S^3 and S^5 provide time-dependent solutions to the Matrix Model of
D0-branes and its DBI generalisation. Some intriguing cancellations in the
calculation of the non-abelian DBI Matrix actions result in the fuzzy-S^3 and
S^5 having the same dynamics at large-N. For the Matrix model, we find analytic
solutions describing the time-dependent radius, in terms of Jacobi elliptic
functions. Investigation of the physical properties of these configurations
shows that there are no bounces for the trajectory of the collapse at large-N.
We also write down a set of useful identities for fuzzy-S^3, fuzzy-S^5 and
general fuzzy odd-spheres.Comment: 35 pages, latex; v2: discussion in Appendix B on the large-N limit of
