    Limits to the Mass and the Radius of the Compact Star in SAX J1808.4--3658 and Their Implications

    We show that a survey of equations of state and observations of X-ray pulsations from SAX J1808.4-3658 give 2.27 solar mass as the upper limit of the compact star mass. The corresponding upper limit of the radius comes out to be 9.73 km. We also do a probabilistic study to estimate the lower limit of the mass of the compact star. Such a limit puts useful constraints on equations of state. We also discuss the implications of the upper mass limit for the the evolutionary history of the source, as well as the detection of it in radio frequencies. We envisage that the possible observation of radio-eclipse may be able to rule out several soft equation of state models, by setting a moderately high value for the lower limit of inclination angle.Comment: 7 pages, 1 table, 2 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ Letter

    Perspective of beneficial microbes in agriculture under changing climatic scenario: a review

    Agriculture is a complex network of interactions of plants with microorganisms. There is a growing demand for ecologically compatible environment friendly technique in agriculture that might be able to provide adequate supply of nutrients for the increasing human populations through improvement of the quality and quantity of agricultural products. Under the changing climatic scenario of global fluxes of the key biogenic greenhouse gases (CO2, methane and nitrous oxide), and some other environmental problems, the application of beneficial microorganisms in agriculture would serve as an important alternative gateway to some of the traditional agricultural techniques. Microorganisms of agricultural importance represent key ecological strategy for integrated management practices like nutrient management, disease and pest management in order to reduce the use of chemicals in agriculture as well to improve cultivar performance. The present review is intended to focus on the emergence of agriculturally important microorganisms (AIMs) to develop an ideal agricultural system through efficient utilization of nutrients and recycling of energy and thereby to preserve the natural ecosystem resources under climate change. The progress to date in using the beneficial microflora in a variety of applications related to agriculture along with key mechanism of action is also discussed in this review

    General Relativistic effects on the conversion of nuclear to two-flavour quark matter in compact stars

    We investigate the General Relativistic (GR) effects on the conversion from nuclear to two-flavour quark matter in compact stars, both static as well as rotating. We find that GR effects lead to qualitative differences in rotating stars, indicating the inadequacy of non-relativistic (NR) or even Special Relativistic (SR) treatments for these cases.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Momentum dependence of drag coefficients and heavy flavour suppression in quark gluon plasma

    The momentum dependence of the drag coefficient of heavy quarks propagating through quark gluon plasma (QGP) has been evaluated. The results have been used to estimate the nuclear suppression factor of charm and bottom quarks in QGP. We observe that the momentum dependence of the transport coefficients plays crucial role in the suppression of the heavy quarks and consequently in discerning the properties of QGP using heavy flavours as a probe. We show that the large suppression of the heavy quarks observed at RHIC and LHC is predominantly due to the radiative losses. The suppression of D0D^0 in Pb+Pb collisions at LHC energy - recently measured by the ALICE collaboration has also been studied.Comment: Minor changes in the tex

    Fluid dynamics of R-charged black holes

    We construct electrically charged AdS_5 black hole solutions whose charge, mass and boost-parameters vary slowly with the space-time coordinates. From the perspective of the dual theory, these are equivalent to hydrodynamic configurations with varying chemical potential, temperature and velocity fields. We compute the boundary theory transport coefficients associated with a derivative expansion of the energy momentum tensor and R-charge current up to second order.     Higher Derivative Corrections to Locally Black Brane Metrics

    In this paper we generalize the construction of locally boosted black brane space time to higher derivative gravities. We consider the Gauss-Bonnet term (with coefficient α\alpha') as a toy example. We find the solution to the α\alpha' corrected Einstein equations to first order in the boundary derivative expansion. This allows us to find the α\alpha' corrections to the boundary stress tensor in the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term in the bulk action. We therefore obtain the ratio of shear viscosity to entropy which agrees with other methods of computation in the literature.Comment: 0+17 page

    The Energy Loss of a Heavy Quark Moving in a Viscous Fluid

    To study the rate of energy and momentum loss of a heavy quark in QGP, specifically in the hydrodynamic regime, we use fluid/gravity duality and construct a perturbative procedure to find the string solution in gravity side. We show that by this construction the drag force exerted on the quark can be computed perturbatively, order by order in a boundary derivative expansion. At ideal order, our result is just the drag force exerted on a moving quark in thermal plasma with thermodynamics variables promoted to become local functions of space and time. Furthermore, we apply this procedure to a transverse quark in Bjorken flow and compute the first-derivative corrections, namely the viscous corrections, to the drag force.Comment: 33 pages, 6 figures, references added v5: Some correction

    SUSY darkmatter at the LHC - 7 TeV

    We have analysed the early LHC signatures of the minimal supergravity (mSUGRA) model. Our emphasis is on the 7 - TeVTeV run corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.0 fb1\sim 1.0 ~fb^{-1} although we have also discussed briefly the prospects at LHC-10 TeVTeV. We focus on the parameter space yielding relatively light squark and gluinos consistent with the darkmatter relic density data and the LEP bounds on the lightest Higgs scalar mass. This parameter space is only allowed for non-vanishing trilinear soft breaking term A0A_0. A significant region of the parameter space with large to moderate negative values of A0A_0 consistent with the stability of the scalar potential and relic density production via neutralino annihilation and/or neutralino - stau coannihilation yields observable signal via the jets + missing transverse energy channel. The one lepton + jets + missing energy signal is also viable over a smaller but non-trivial parameter space. The ratio of the size of the two signals - free from theoretical uncertainties - may distinguish between different relic density generating mechanisms. With efficient τ\tau-tagging facilities at 7 TeVTeV the discriminating power may increase significantly. We also comment on other dark matter relic density allowed mSUGRA scenarios and variants there of in the context of LHC-7 TeVTeV.Comment: Brief comments on signals at 7 TeV in the Higgs funnel region of mSUGRA, models with non universal scalar and gaugino masses have been added.     Constraining R-parity violating couplings from B --> PP decays using QCD improved factorization method

    We investigate the role of R-parity violating interaction in the non-leptonic decays of B mesons into two light mesons B --> PP. The decay amplitudes are calculated using the QCD improved factorization method. Using the combined data on B decays from BaBar, Belle and CLEO, we obtain strong constraints on the various products of R-parity violating couplings. Many of these new constraints are stronger than the existing bounds.Comment: 19 pages including two eps figure
