    In the proper context: Neuropeptide regulation of behavioral transitions during food searching

    Neuromodulation enables transient restructuring of anatomically fixed neural circuits, generating alternate outputs and distinct states that allow for flexible organismal responses to changing conditions. We recently identified a requirement for the neuropeptide-like protein NLP-12, a Caenorhabditis elegans homolog of mammalian Cholecystokinin (CCK), in the control of behavioral responses to altered food availability. We showed that deletion of nlp-12 impairs turning during local food searching while nlp-12 overexpression is sufficient to induce deep body bends and enhance turning. nlp-12 is solely expressed in the DVA interneuron that is located postsynaptic to the dopaminergic PDE neurons and presynaptic to premotor and motor neurons, well-positioned for modulating sensorimotor tasks. Interestingly, DVA was previously implicated in a NLP-12 mediated proprioceptive feedback loop during C. elegans locomotion. Here, we discuss the modulatory effects of NLP-12 with an emphasis on the potential for circuit level integration with olfactory information about food availability. In addition, we propose potential mechanisms by which DVA may integrate distinct forms of sensory information to regulate NLP-12 signaling and mediate context-dependent modulation of the motor circuit

    Obstetric consequences of subfertility: a retrospective cohort study

    Objective To compare the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with and without subfertility and to investigate whether fertility treatment contributes to the adverse outcomes. Design Registerā€based retrospective cohort study. Setting Aberdeen, Scotland Population The exposed group included women with subfertility attending Aberdeen Fertility Clinic between 1989 and 2008 and delivering a singleton (n = 3188) or twin (n = 350) at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital between 1992 and 2009. The unexposed cohort included the remainder of women (singleton n = 52443, twin n = 1125) delivering at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital between 1992 and 2009. Methods The Aberdeen Fertility Centre database and Aberdeen Maternity and Neonatal Databank were linked using Community Health Index numbers. Regression models were used to calculate risk ratios and 95% confidence intervals adjusting for potential confounders. Main outcome measures Maternal outcomes including preā€eclampsia, antepartum haemorrhage, preterm birth, induction of labour; delivery outcomes including operative vaginal delivery, caesarean section; and offspring outcomes including low birthweight, stillbirth and neonatal death. Results Women with a history of subfertility who delivered a singleton were at a higher risk of preā€eclampsia [adjusted risk ratios (aRR) 1.18, 95% confidence intervals (CI) 1.02ā€“1.37], antepartum haemorrhage (aRR 1.32, 95% CI 1.18ā€“1.47), induction of labour (aRR 1.21, 95% CI 1.11ā€“1.31) and very preterm delivery (<32 weeks) (aRR 1.96, 95% CI 1.53ā€“2.49). Subfertile women delivering twins were at a higher risk of being delivered by emergency caesarean section (aRR 2.14, 95% CI 1.26ā€“3.66). There were no significant differences in adverse outcomes for singleton pregnancies between the treated and untreated subfertile couples. Conclusion Subfertility per se, rather than fertility treatment, was associated with increased risk of adverse outcomes in singleton pregnancies

    Ferromagnetism in nanoscale BiFeO3

    A remarkably high saturation magnetization of ~0.4mu_B/Fe along with room temperature ferromagnetic hysteresis loop has been observed in nanoscale (4-40 nm) multiferroic BiFeO_3 which in bulk form exhibits weak magnetization (~0.02mu_B/Fe) and an antiferromagnetic order. The magnetic hysteresis loops, however, exhibit exchange bias as well as vertical asymmetry which could be because of spin pinning at the boundaries between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic domains. Interestingly, like in bulk BiFeO_3, both the calorimetric and dielectric permittivity data in nanoscale BiFeO_3 exhibit characteristic features at the magnetic transition point. These features establish formation of a true ferromagnetic-ferroelectric system with a coupling between the respective order parameters in nanoscale BiFeO_3.Comment: 13 pages including 4 figures; pdf only; submitted to Appl.     Biological and materials properties of various cholesterol based systems

    Liposomes composed of cationic lipids have become very popular gene delivery vehicles. A great deal of research is being pursued to make efficient vectors by varying their molecular architecture. Cholesterol being ubiquitous component in most of the animal cell membranes is increasingly being used as a hydrophobic segment of synthetic cationic lipids. In this review we describe various cholesterol based cationic lipids and focus on the effect of modifying various structural segments like linker and the head group of the cationic lipids on gene transfection efficiency with a special emphasis on the importance of ether linkage between cholesteryl backbone and the polar head group. Interaction of cationic cholesteryl lipids with dipalmitylphosphatidycholine membranes is also discussed here. Apart from cholesterol being an attractive scaffold in the drug/gene delivery vehicles, certain cholesteryl derivatives have also been shown to be attractive room temperature liquid-crystalline materials
