    The Role of Opacities in Stellar Pulsation

    We examine the role of opacities in stellar pulsation with reference to Cepheids and RR Lyraes, and examine the effect of augmented opacities on the theoretical pulsation light curves in key temperature ranges. The temperature ranges are provided by recent experimental and theoretical work that have suggested that the iron opacities have been considerably underestimated. For Cepheids, we find that the augmented opacities have noticeable effects in certain period ranges (around log⁡P≈1\log P \approx 1) even though there is a degeneracy with mixing length.     Spatial heterogeneity in the radiogenic activity of the lunar interior: Inferences from CHACE and LLRI on Chandrayaan-1

    In the past, clues on the potential radiogenic activity of the lunar interior have been obtained from the isotopic composition of noble gases like Argon. Excess Argon (40) relative to Argon (36), as compared to the solar wind composition, is generally ascribed to the radiogenic activity of the lunar interior. Almost all the previous estimates were based on, 'on-the-spot' measurements from the landing sites. Relative concentration of the isotopes of 40Ar and 36Ar along a meridian by the Chandra's Altitudinal Composition Explorer (CHACE) experiment, on the Moon Impact Probe (MIP) of India's first mission to Moon, has independently yielded clues on the possible spatial heterogeneity in the radiogenic activity of the lunar interior in addition to providing indicative 'antiquity' of the lunar surface along the ground track over the near side of the moon. These results are shown to broadly corroborate the independent topography measurements by the Lunar Laser Ranging Instrument (LLRI) in the main orbiter Chandrayaan-1. The unique combination of these experiments provided high spatial resolution data while indicating the possible close linkages between the lunar interior and the lunar ambience

    Modulated structure in the martensite phase of Ni1.8Pt0.2MnGa: a neutron diffraction study

    7M orthorhombic modulated structure in the martensite phase of Ni1.8Pt0.2MnGa is reported by powder neutron diffraction study, which indicates that it is likely to exhibit magnetic field induced strain. The change in the unit cell volume is less than 0.5% between the austenite and martensite phases, as expected for a volume conserving martensite transformation. The magnetic structure analysis shows that the magnetic moment in the martensite phase is higher compared to Ni2MnGa, which is in good agreement with magnetization measurement

    Large Magellanic Cloud Near-Infrared Synoptic Survey. II. The Wesenheit relations and their application to the Distance scale

    We present new near-infrared Cepheid Period-Wesenheit relations in the LMC using time-series observations from the Large Magellanic Cloud Near-Infrared Synoptic Survey. We also derive optical++near-infrared P-W relations using VV and II~magnitudes from OGLE-III. We employ our new JHKsJHK_s data to determine an independent distance to the LMC of ÎŒLMC=18.47±0.07(statistical)\mu_{\rm LMC} = 18.47\pm0.07 {\textit{(statistical)}}~mag, using an absolute calibration of the Galactic relations based on several distance determination methods and accounting for the intrinsic scatter of each technique. We also derive new near-infrared Period-Luminosity and Wesenheit relations for Cepheids in M31 using observations from the PHAT survey. We use the absolute calibrations of the Galactic and LMC WJ,HW_{J,H} relations to determine the distance modulus of M31, ÎŒM31=24.46±0.20\mu_{\rm M31} = 24.46\pm0.20~mag. We apply a simultaneous fit to Cepheids in several Local Group galaxies covering a range of metallicities (7.7<12+log⁥[O/H]<8.67.7<12+\log[O/H]<8.6~dex) to determine a global slope of -3.244±0.0163.244\pm0.016~mag/dex for the WJ,KsW_{J,K_s} relation and obtain robust distance estimates. Our distances are in good agreement with recent TRGB based distance estimates and we do not find any evidence for a metallicity dependence in the near-infrared P-W relations.Comment: 16 pages, 8 figures, Accepted for publication in The Astronomical Journa

    Angiogenesis-dependent and independent phases of intimal hyperplasia.

    BACKGROUND: Neointimal vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation is a primary cause of occlusive vascular disease, including atherosclerosis, restenosis after percutaneous interventions, and bypass graft stenosis. Angiogenesis is implicated in the progression of early atheromatous lesions in animal models, but its role in neointimal VSMC proliferation is undefined. Because percutaneous coronary interventions result in induction of periadventitial angiogenesis, we analyzed the role of this process in neointima formation. METHODS AND RESULTS: Local injury to the arterial wall in 2 different animal models induced periadventitial angiogenesis and neointima formation. Application of angiogenesis stimulators vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF-A165) or a proline/arginine-rich peptide (PR39) to the adventitia of the injured artery induced a marked increase in neointimal thickening beyond that seen with injury alone in both in vivo models. Inhibition of either VEGF (with soluble VEGF receptor 1 [sFlt1]) or fibroblast growth factor (FGF) (with a dominant=negative form of FGF receptor 1 [FGF-R1DN]), respectively, signaling reduced adventitial thickening induced by VEGF and PR39 to the level seen with mechanical arterial injury alone. However, neither inhibitor was effective in preventing neointimal thickening after mechanical injury when administered in the absence of angiogenic growth factor. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate that adventitial angiogenesis stimulates intimal thickening but does not initiate it

    Contextualizing the Relevance of Antimicrobial Resistance in the Drug Prescription and Consumption Pattern of a Tertiary Level Hospital

    Rampant, irrational and unscientific use of antimicrobials by the healthcare practitioners is adding to the problem of antimicrobial resistance. Therefore, it is of utmost importance to evolve and implement new policies, recommence research actions and pursue steps to manage the crisis of antimicrobial resistance, which can be accomplished by a well-designed Antimicrobial Stewardship programme. A prospective observational study aiming to investigate the use of antimicrobials in Intensive Care Units by means of an AMS programme was carried out in a 400 bedded tertiary level hospital in New Delhi with 140 ICU beds. This evidence-based study looksinto the prescription and consumption of antimicrobials, specifically in the ICUs, and attempts to corelate it with the resistance pattern of antimicrobials being used. All the patients being treated with antimicrobials, admitted in the ICUs of the hospital were selected for this descriptive research. Information associated with antimicrobials including the susceptibility pattern of isolates and full dosage regime of each patient from the group was obtained by conducting daily audits for a period of five months. Among the usage of different antimicrobial categories (antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral), the resistance percentage correlation was predominantly focused on theantibacterial. However, the study suggests no conclusive direct or indirect correlation between the usage of an antibacterial (in terms of prescription and consumption) and its resistance, which itself could be a cause of concern for medical practitioners

    Studying the Lunar-Solar Wind Interaction with the SARA Experiment aboard the Indian Lunar Mission Chandrayaan-1

    The first Indian lunar mission Chandrayaan-1 was launched on 22 October 2008. The Sub-keV Atom Reflecting Analyzer (SARA) instrument onboard Chandrayaan-1 consists of an energetic neutral atom (ENA) imaging mass analyzer called CENA (Chandrayaan-1 Energetic Neutrals Analyzer), and an ion-mass analyzer called SWIM (Solar wind Monitor). CENA performed the first ever experiment to study the solar wind-planetary surface interaction via detection of sputtered neutral atoms and neutralized backscattered solar wind protons in the energy range ~0.01-3.0 keV. SWIM measures solar wind ions, magnetosheath and magnetotail ions, as well as ions scattered from lunar surface in the ~0.01-15 keV energy range. The neutral atom sensor uses conversion of the incoming neutrals to positive ions, which are then analyzed via surface interaction technique. The ion mass analyzer is based on similar principle. This paper presents the SARA instrument and the first results obtained by the SWIM and CENA sensors. SARA observations suggest that about 20% of the incident solar wind protons are backscattered as neutral hydrogen and ~1% as protons from the lunar surface. These findings have important implications for other airless bodies in the solar system.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure

    Protons in the near-lunar wake observed by the Sub-keV Atom Reflection Analyzer on board Chandrayaan-1

    Significant proton fluxes were detected in the near wake region of the Moon by an ion mass spectrometer on board Chandrayaan-1. The energy of these nightside protons is slightly higher than the energy of the solar wind protons. The protons are detected close to the lunar equatorial plane at a 140∘140^{\circ} solar zenith angle, i.e., ~50∘^{\circ} behind the terminator at a height of 100 km. The protons come from just above the local horizon, and move along the magnetic field in the solar wind reference frame. We compared the observed proton flux with the predictions from analytical models of an electrostatic plasma expansion into a vacuum. The observed velocity was higher than the velocity predicted by analytical models by a factor of 2 to 3. The simple analytical models cannot explain the observed ion dynamics along the magnetic field in the vicinity of the Moon.Comment: 28 pages, 7 figure
