Electronic excitations in the edge-shared relativistic Mott insulator: Na2IrO3

    Get PDF
We have investigated the excitation spectra of j(eff) = 1/2 Mott insulator Na2IrO3. Taking into account a relativistic multiplet structure of Ir ions, we have calculated the optical conductivity sigma(omega) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) spectra, which manifest different features from those of a canonical j(eff) = 1/2 system Sr2IrO4. Distinctly from the two-peak structure in Sr2IrO4, sigma(omega) in Na2IrO3 has a broad single peak dominated by interband transitions from j(eff) = 3/2 to 1/2. RIXS spectra exhibit the spin-orbit (SO) exciton that has a two-peak structure arising from the crystal-field effect, and the magnon peak at energies much lower than in Sr2IrO4. In addition, a small peak near the optical-absorption edge is found in RIXS spectra, originating from the coupling between the electron-hole (e-h) excitation and the SO exciton. Our findings corroborate the validity of the relativistic electronic structure and importance of both itinerant and local features in Na2IrO3.open1122sciescopu

G-quadruplex formation using fluorescent oligonucleotides as a detection method for discriminating AGG trinucleotide repeats

We have developed a simple and sensitive system for detecting AGG trinucleotide repeats through the formation of intermolecular G-quadruplexes using a fluorescent oligonucleotide. The fluorescence signal increased rapidly and dramatically by 44.7-fold with respect to the low background signal in the presence of RNA agg repeats and by 35.0-fold in the presence of DNA AGG repeats.1163Ysciescopu

Dynamic Web Content Filtering Based on User's Knowledge

    Get PDF
This paper focuses on the development of a maintainable information filtering system. The simple and efficient solution to this problem is to block the Web sites by URL, including IP address. However, it is not efficient for unknown Web sites and it is difficult to obtain complete block list. Content based filtering is suggested to overcome this problem as an additional strategy of URL filtering. The manual rule based method is widely applied in current content filtering systems, but they overlook the knowledge acquisition bottleneck problems. To solve this problem, we employed the Multiple Classification Ripple-Down Rules (MCRDR) knowledge acquisition method, which allows the domain expert to maintain the knowledge base without the help of knowledge engineers. Throughout this study, we will prove the MCRDR based information filtering system can easily prevent unknown Web information from being delivered and easily maintain the knowledge base for the filtering system

An Illumination Identification System for the AIBO Robot

The Four Legged League is a division of the RoboCup initiative that uses Sony AIBOTM robots to further robotics research. Most participants implement vision systems that use the color of objects to perform identification. Calibration of the color classification system must be done and any changes to the lighting of the environment after calibration reduces the accuracy of the system, often to a point at which the robot is effectively blind. This study investigates the relationships in the color data of image pixels between lighting conditions in an effort to identify trends that can be used as the basis of a rule-based system. The aim of the system is to identify the current lighting level as one of a set of known conditions. The proposed systems uses the color data of image pixels and information about the AIBO’s location and orientation to identify lighting levels, allowing a vision system to switch to an appropriate pre-configured calibratio

An Automated WSDL Generation and Enhanced SOAP Message Processing System for Mobile Web Services

Web services are key applications in business-to-business, business-to-customer, and enterprise applications integration solutions. As the mobile Internet becomes one of the main methods for information delivery, mobile Web Services are regarded as a critical aspect of e-business architecture. In this paper, we proposed a mobile Web Services middleware that converts conventional Internet services into mobile Web services. We implemented a WSDL (Web Service Description Language) builder that converts HTML/XML into WSDL and a SAOP (Simple Object Access Protocol) message processor. The former minimizes the overhead cost of rebuilding mobile Web Services and enables seamless services between wired and wireless Internet services. The latter enhances SOAP processing performance by eliminating the Servlet container (Tomcat), a required component of typical Web services implementation. Our system can completely support standard Web Services protocol, minimizing communication overhead, message processing time, and server overload. Finally we compare our empirical results with those of typical Web Service
