    Get PDF
This article explores, in general, three areas for leadership communication that women in business need to master.  Indeed, there are more than three, but the focus here is on:  the need to master the art of successfully confronting the problem when it appears, the process of leading a team, the special requirements of communicating with men. An exploration of these three areas shows that the vital and often missing link is opportunity for females to practice and feedback from male mentors and counterparts. The report also lists the top 10 strategies that women need in order to be perceived as successful leaders and communicators

Teaching Leadership in the EMBA: Where to Begin

    Get PDF
An examination of the role of a corporate leader versus the role of a corporate manager makes clear the distinct differences. The lines are often blurred in discussion of these executive levels of corporate governance, and individuals in the corporate settings often seek leadership roles without a clear understanding of what the leadership with the capital “L” entails.  In addition, individuals seek leadership roles out of the need to be rescued from a management position and are seeking leadership for the wrong reasons.  A careful and lengthy process of personal evaluation is a mandate for individuals seeking leadership.  Leadership is not a venue for the many, but only for the few and requires more than management expertise

Redesign Of The Undergraduate Business Curriculum: The Way Forward, A Paradigm Shift

    Get PDF
The need to reform the undergraduate business curriculum was in evidence before 9/11 and is more imperative since the stock market disintegration beginning in December 2007.  The stakeholders will not tolerate the old methods of functional teaching for business school graduates.  Graduates must be work ready and the challenges to business schools are evident in declining enrollments and loss of funding trends which will be evident for the next decade.  What we do now will be how we operate for the next ten years.  Schools cannot invest in professional development of faculties and redesign of courses in a casual manner.  This article poses the process business model as one pattern for redesign and explores the implementation of this model with specific examples of pedagogical methods for the redesign of the undergraduate business curriculum. An example for implementation of the approach to include the experiential element which begins to breakdown silo teaching in a three-hundred level undergraduate Management class is included in the appendix

The Impact Of Globalization And Technology On Teaching Business Communication: Reframing And Enlarging World View, Methods, And Content

    Get PDF
This paper explores the current paradigm shift in the use of technology in the classroom, which is occurring because of technology explosion in society, impact of globalization, necessary reframing, and enlarging of the world view, methods, and content to make business communication classes relevant. The question is whether the classroom should mirror society or whether society will eventually mirror the classroom. If the classroom mirrors society, the responsibility of methods and content becomes an outwardly directed response. In essence, we simply copy what we see happening in technology within the business arena, such as blogs, Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube videos. If society will mirror the classroom, then the content and methods used can determine whether the potential for higher order thinking can be actualized within the society, as a whole, through the pedagogy of business communication. This actualization must come through the structure and use of an ethical core in teaching, with an understanding that technology has the power to both advance innovation and collaboration or mislead and distort, and it is the classroom facilitator’s responsibility to foster the realization of the power of technology. The business world is challenging those of us who teach business communication to make use of technology in a more “21st century” manner; not so much in the use of technology, but more in the attitudes that shape its use. In addition to teaching how to use technology for communication, there is a strong push to teach appropriate ethics in its use within a reframed world view. This paper addresses how content and methods must be reframed and how professors must adopt a revised world view that aligns with a culturally diverse audience and a 24/7, communicative, free, and open environment. The power and force of said technology, specifically social-media communication, has the ability to alter the course of lives, communities, corporations, and countries and must be seen as an integral part of the business classroom

Women In The World Of Corporate Business: Looking At The Glass Ceiling

From a review of some of the literature and a brief compiling of statistics on women in positions of leadership and power, and with a quick look at the life and work of some contemporary women who have thought about and lived the life of corporate leadership, it is clear that women have made small progress into positions of power and influence.  Research shows that this is true because they did not desire the positions of leadership, did not want to pay the price of the loneliness of leadership, or were derailed in some way by sex.  A review of the timeline for the advances for women also shows the disconnect between what happens in legislation or social opinion and what really happens to the plight of women in the halls of power. Research indicates the alternative for women seeking positions of power in the corporate structure is as follows: Some women…who are the best qualified for leadership…leave the corporate ranks and never return. Some decide to become entrepreneurs. Some decide on other upward mobility enterprises. This paucity of women in the Boardroom and at the helm of corporate power definitely accounts for the lack of soul, ethics, and the general quandary in corporate America. The dilemma that leaders are now facing is:  What happened here, as evidence by corporate scandals and the fall of Wall Street, where do we go, and what do we do now? It is the focus of this paper to show that the greatest deterioration of the corporate structure is caused by the following: Not including and/or promoting women into the ranks of leadership…real policy making power…not providing a female friendly environment for women, not setting up legitimate and ongoing mentoring systems for women, not recognizing the different, but significant, voice of knowledge that women bring to the table

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator As A Tool To Facilitate Learning Outcomes For Team Building In The Classroom

    Get PDF
Globalization and domestic competition are forcing businesses to rethink the human resources utilization process, and one method for considering again this challenge is creating a team culture.  One key to this process for human resources development is the understanding of how to create the most successful teams.  The use of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is a tool often used by business to achieve the goals of building work teams. College business majors must be introduced to the MBTI and to the dynamics of team building as a measurable skill necessary for their work environment.  This research focuses on college classes in business communications, the directed study of the MBTI, and the heterogeneous mix of type in teams necessary for high learning outcomes.  Specific pedagogical directions are provided for two team-building projects in writing, research, and oral presentation to small groups, thus meeting multiple course objectives

The demographics and attitudes of students to cheating on a small, southern, urban, liberal arts institution were surveyed in terms of gender, extra-curricular activities , church attendance, age, and classification (undergraduate and graduate). Some of the prominent literature on demographics and academic violations is reviewed. The study concludes that at least 90% of students surveyed engage in some form of cheating, and students did not view digital cheating as an academic violation. This sample indicated that there is no significant difference in propensities to cheat among the variables included in this survey. Some possible measures are listed to help deter cheating on college campuses

A Primer For Accounting Certification: Complete Analysis Of The Process With Listing Of Sources

    Get PDF
As a result of globalization and the growth and complexity of both domestic and international bodies requiring accountants, the need for highly sophisticated training and specific certification is mandatory. Students seeking career positions in the field of accounting are amazingly left without the easy access to certification that one might think would be readily available. Interest in, and the quest for, certification is domestic and international and across all study fields.  To be fully prepared a well-equipped accountant today will be cross functional and have “proof” of his/her knowledge in the form of certifications in other fields as well as being multi-national by holding certifications issued in countries where he/she practices or travels.  Currently, because the field is being transformed so rapidly by world events and the economy, students, as well as practitioners, need more easily accessible information on what certifications are available and how to achieve them. This document identifies and reviews accounting requirements and major certifications in accounting, finance, and information technology, including the recently developed fields of fraud and forensic accounting.  Basic access information is provided for each requirement and certification and web addresses for additional data relating to qualification and certification are included
