Sneutrino as Lightest Supersymmetric Particle in B3 mSUGRA Models and Signals at the LHC
We consider B3 mSUGRA models where we have one lepton number violating LQD
operator at the GUT scale. This can alter the supersymmetric mass spectrum
leading to a sneutrino as the lightest supersymmetric particle in a large
region of parameter space. We take into account the restrictions from neutrino
masses, the muon anomalous magnetic moment, b -> s gamma and other precision
measurements. We furthermore investigate existing restrictions from direct
searches at LEP, the Tevatron and the CERN p\bar p collider. We then give
examples for characteristic signatures at the LHC.Comment: 22 pages, 11 figure
Holographic Image Reconstruction from Electron Diffraction Intensities of Ordered Superstructures
We report on a novel holographic reconstruction of well resolved atomic images from discrete spot intensities appearing in low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) from crystalline surfaces. This opens holographic LEED to the wide field of ordered systems giving access to rather complex surface structures
Influence of damping on the excitation of the double giant resonance
We study the effect of the spreading widths on the excitation probabilities
of the double giant dipole resonance. We solve the coupled-channels equations
for the excitation of the giant dipole resonance and the double giant dipole
resonance. Taking Pb+Pb collisions as example, we study the resulting effect on
the excitation amplitudes, and cross sections as a function of the width of the

Novel Reconstruction Mechanism for Dangling-Bond Minimization: Combined Method Surface Structure Determination of SiC(111)-(3×3)
The SiC(111)−(3×3) phase was analyzed by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED) holography, density functional theory (DFT), and conventional LEED. A single adatom per unit cell found in STM acts as a beam splitter for the holographic inversion of discrete LEED spot intensities. The resulting 3D image guides the detailed analyses by LEED and DFT which find a Si tetramer on a twisted Si adlayer with cloverlike rings. This twist model with one dangling bond left per unit cell represents a novel (n×n)-reconstruction mechanism of group-IV (111) surfaces
An exact solution of the moving boundary problem for the relativistic plasma expansion in a dipole magnetic field
An exact analytic solution is obtained for a uniformly expanding, neutral,
highly conducting plasma sphere in an ambient dipole magnetic field with an
arbitrary orientation of the dipole moment in the space. Based on this solution
the electrodynamical aspects related to the emission and transformation of
energy have been considered. In order to highlight the effect of the
orientation of the dipole moment in the space we compare our results obtained
for parallel orientation with those for transversal orientation. The results
obtained can be used to treat qualitatively experimental and simulation data,

Characterization of cytochrome P450 CYP109E1 from Bacillus megaterium as a novel vitamin D3 hydroxylase
In this study the ability of CYP109E1 from Bacillus megaterium to metabolize vitamin D3 (VD3) was investigated. In an in vitro system using bovine adrenodoxin reductase (AdR) and adrenodoxin (Adx4-108), VD3 was converted by CYP109E1 into several products. Furthermore, a whole-cell system in B. megaterium MS941 was established. The new system showed a conversion of 95% after 24h. By NMR analysis it was found that CYP109E1 catalyzes hydroxylation of VD3 at carbons C-24 and C-25, resulting in the formation of 24(S)-hydroxyvitamin D3 (24S(OH)VD3), 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25(OH)VD3) and 24S,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (24S,25(OH)2VD3). Through time dependent whole-cell conversion of VD3, we identified that the formation of 24S,25(OH)2VD3 by CYP109E1 is derived from VD3 via the intermediate 24S(OH)VD3. Moreover, using docking analysis and site-directed mutagenesis, we identified important active site residues capable of determining substrate specificity and regio-selectivity. HPLC analysis of the whole-cell conversion with the I85A-mutant revealed an increased selectivity towards 25-hydroxylation of VD3 compared with the wild type activity, resulting in an approximately 2-fold increase of 25(OH)VD3 production (45mgl(-1)day(-1)) compared to wild type (24.5mgl(-1)day(-1))
Burrowing owls, Pulex irritans and plague
Western burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) are small, ground-dwelling owls ofwestern North America that frequent prairie dog (Cynomys spp.) towns and other grasslands.As they rely on rodent prey and occupy burrows once or concurrently inhabited by fossorialmammals, the owls often harbor fleas. We examined the potential role of fleas found onburrowing owls in plague dynamics by evaluating prevalence of Yersinia pestis in fleas and inowl blood. During 2012-2013 fleas and blood were collected from burrowing owls in portionsof five states with endemic plague: Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Colorado, and South Dakota.Fleas were enumerated, taxonomically identified, pooled by nest and assayed for Y. pestis usingculturing and molecular (PCR) approaches. Owl blood underwent serological analysis for plagueantibodies and nested PCR for detection of Y. pestis. Of \u3e4750 fleas collected from owls, Pulexirritans, a known plague vector in portions of its range, comprised more than 99.4%. However,diagnostic tests for Y. pestis of flea pools (culturing and PCR) and owl blood (PCR and serology)were negative. Thus, despite that fleas were prevalent on burrowing owls, and the potentialfor a relationship with burrowing owls as a phoretic host of infected fleas exists, we found noevidence of Y. pestis in sampled fleas or in owls that harbored them. We suggest that studiessimilar to those reported here during plague epizootics will be especially useful for confirmingthese results
LEED Holography applied to a complex superstructure: a direct view of the adatom cluster on SiC(111)-(3x3)
For the example of the SiC(111)-(3x3) reconstruction we show that a
holographic interpretation of discrete Low Energy Electron Diffraction (LEED)
spot intensities arising from ordered, large unit cell superstructures can give
direct access to the local geometry of a cluster around an elevated atom,
provided there is only one such prominent atom per surface unit cell. By
comparing the holographic images obtained from experimental and calculated data
we illuminate validity, current limits and possible shortcomings of the method.
In particular, we show that periodic vacancies such as cornerholes may inhibit
the correct detection of the atomic positions. By contrast, the extra
diffraction intensity due to slight substrate reconstructions, as for example
buckling, seems to have negligible influence on the images. Due to the spatial
information depth of the method the stacking of the cluster can be imaged down
to the fourth layer. Finally, it is demonstrated how this structural knowledge
of the adcluster geometry can be used to guide the dynamical intensity analysis
subsequent to the holographic reconstruction and necessary to retrieve the full

Rates of Dinitrogen Fixation and the Abundance of Diazotrophs in North American Coastal Waters Between Cape Hatteras and Georges Bank
We coupled dinitrogen (N2) fixation rate estimates with molecular biological methods to determine the activity and abundance of diazotrophs in coastal waters along the temperate North American Mid-Atlantic continental shelf during multiple seasons and cruises. Volumetric rates of N2 fixation were as high as 49.8 nmol N L(sup -1) d(sup -1) and areal rates as high as 837.9 micromol N m(sup -2) d(sup -1) in our study area. Our results suggest that N2 fixation occurs at high rates in coastal shelf waters that were previously thought to be unimportant sites of N2 fixation and so were excluded from calculations of pelagic marine N2 fixation. Unicellular N2-fixing group A cyanobacteria were the most abundant diazotrophs in the Atlantic coastal waters and their abundance was comparable to, or higher than, that measured in oceanic regimes where they were discovered. High rates of N2 fixation and the high abundance of diazotrophs along the North American Mid-Atlantic continental shelf highlight the need to revise marine N budgets to include coastal N2 fixation. Integrating areal rates of N2 fixation over the continental shelf area between Cape Hatteras and Nova Scotia, the estimated N2 fixation in this temperate shelf system is about 0.02 Tmol N yr(sup -1), the amount previously calculated for the entire North Atlantic continental shelf. Additional studies should provide spatially, temporally, and seasonally resolved rate estimates from coastal systems to better constrain N inputs via N2 fixation from the neritic zone

Samples of grade A Monel snd grade A nickel were subjected statically in a single reactor to an undiluted atmosphere of gaseous fluorine at pressures up to one atmosphere absolute and temperatures up to 1500 deg F. The grade A Monel was conservatively estimated to have consumed at least 40 times as much fluorine as grade A nickel during the entire period of the investigation. Samples of fused alpha Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/, alpha -Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/- MgO spinel, and alpha -Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/-NiO--nickel cermet were exposed to undiluted fluorine at one atinosphere absolute pressure at temperatures of 1340 and 1500 deg F. Results indicated that the alpha -Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/ is as good as the Ni in the region of 1300 deg F. Grade A nickel samples coated with nickel fluoride filins of 37,000 and 74,000 A, respectively, were exposed to an absolute pressure of gaseous UF/sub 6/ of 12 cm of Hg at temperatures of 1000 and 1800 deg F.
