Exploring quark transverse momentum distributions with lattice QCD
We discuss in detail a method to study transverse momentum dependent parton
distribution functions (TMDs) using lattice QCD. To develop the formalism and
to obtain first numerical results, we directly implement a bi-local quark-quark
operator connected by a straight Wilson line, allowing us to study T-even,
"process-independent" TMDs. Beyond results for x-integrated TMDs and quark
densities, we present a study of correlations in x and transverse momentum. Our
calculations are based on domain wall valence quark propagators by the LHP
collaboration calculated on top of gauge configurations provided by MILC with

Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay for urinary albumin at low concentrations
We describe an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for urinary albumin. It requires only commercially available reagents, can detect as little as 16 micrograms of albumin per liter, and analytical recovery ranges from 92 to 116%. The assay is simple, rapid, and inexpensive. Albumin excretion was 6.2 (SD 4.1) mg/24 h in healthy subjects (n = 40), 14.7 (SD 7.2) mg/24 h in albumin-test-strip-negative Type I diabetics (n = 11), and 19.7 (SD 16.2) mg/24 h in patients with essential hypertension (n = 12)
Localization in Reverberation with Cochlear Implants
Users of bilateral cochlear implants (CIs) experience difficulties localizing sounds in reverberant rooms, even in rooms where normal-hearing listeners would hardly notice the reverberation. We measured the localization ability of seven bilateral CI users listening with their own devices in anechoic space and in a simulated reverberant room. To determine factors affecting performance in reverberant space we measured the sensitivity to interaural time differences (ITDs), interaural level differences (ILDs), and forward masking in the same participants using direct computer control of the electric stimulation in their CIs. Localization performance, quantified by the coefficient of determination r(2) and the root mean squared error, was significantly worse in the reverberant room than in anechoic conditions. Localization performance in the anechoic room, expressed as r(2), was best predicted by subject’s sensitivity to ILDs. However, the decrease in localization performance caused by reverberation was better predicted by the sensitivity to envelope ITDs measured on single electrode pairs, with a correlation coefficient of 0.92. The CI users who were highly sensitive to envelope ITDs also better maintained their localization ability in reverberant space. Results in the forward masking task added only marginally to the predictions of localization performance in both environments. The results indicate that envelope ITDs provided by CI processors support localization in reverberant space. Thus, methods that improve perceptual access to envelope ITDs could help improve localization with bilateral CIs in everyday listening situations
Determination of islet cell antibodies using an ELISA system with a preparation of rat insulinoma (RIN A2) cells
An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was established for the detection of islet cell antibodies in human sera. The antigen was prepared from rat insulinoma (RIN A2) cells. Cells were dissociated in lysis buffer and the lysate was centrifuged at 100,000 x g. The supernatant was used to coat microtiter ELISA plates (10 micrograms protein/ml in PBS pH 7.2). Non-specific binding sites on the plates were blocked with 2% PBS-BSA. Human test sera were preabsorbed on separate plates using 2% PBS-BSA and incubated on precoated plates at an optimal dilution of 1/10 in 60 mM PBS for 60 min at 37 degrees C. Phosphatase-labeled anti-human IgG serum and phosphatase substrate were applied and the reaction was stopped by adding 3 M NaOH. Out of 90 sera from type I diabetic patients, 47 (52.2%) reacted in the new ELISA whereas none of 15 type II diabetics, 50 sera containing non-islet specific antibodies or 100 normal controls were positive. In the same group of patients, ICA were positive in 63.3%. When both, the ELISA and conventional ICA testing were applied, the number of positives was increased to 83%. The ICA-ELISA with the above described antigen preparation provides a well standardized and reproducible test method which is highly specific for type I diabetes. It may therefore be useful for large screening procedures
Superconductivity in epitaxial thin films of NaxCoO2 y D2O
The observation of superconductivity in the layered transition metal oxide
NaxCoO2 y H2O (K. Takada et al., Nature 422, 53 (2003)) has caused a tremendous
upsurge of scientific interest due to its similarities and its differences to
the copper based high-temperature superconductors. Two years after the
discovery, we report the fabrication of single-phase superconducting epitaxial
thin films of Na0.3CoO2 x 1.3 D2O grown by pulsed laser deposition technique.
This opens additional roads for experimental research exploring the
superconducting state and the phase diagram of this unconventional material.Comment: 3 pages, 5 figure
