Grafting melons onto potential cucumis spp. rootstocks

    Get PDF
Cucumís melo is an economically importar]t crop. Its culture is hampered by differen t types of soil stresses. Grafting melons onto different resistant cucurbits belonging to the genera, Cucurbíta, Lagenaría, Luffa, etc. have been successfully used to avoid these problems. However, me Ion quality has been nega.tively modified as a consequence of grafting. In general, variation in fruit shape, seed cavity and sugar content have been observed. The use of rootstocks more genetically c\oser to the melon scions could be useful to obtain fru i ts with better quality from melon grafted plantsPostprint (published version

EFFECT OF FEED RESTRICTION AND DIFFERENT CRUDE FIBER SOURCES ON THE BORILER PERFORMANCE. The research aim was to determine the performance of Lohman strain broiler were given by food restriction of 20 percent and 10 percent levels of crude fiber from different fiber sources originated from coffee peel, rice bran and coconut pulp. This research was carried out in a poultry house at the Faculty of Animal Husbandry, UNSRAT Manado, during 6 weeks using 48 unsex Lohman strain broilers at 21 days old. The research method was using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) based on factorial pattern (2x4). Each treatment combination was repeated 3 times. Factor A was a feed restriction consisting of feed without restriction (A0) and restriction of 20% feed for 8 days (A1). Factor B was a source of fiber consisting of control (B0);coffee peel (B1); rice bran (B2) and coconut pulp (B3). In this study, the were 8 treatment combinations of A0B0, A0B1, A0B2, A0B3, A1B0, A1B1, A1B2 and A1B3. Application of feed restriction and source of fiber  were applied during days of 21th to day of 28th. The birds were fed commercial feed until 42 days of age. The variables measured were feed consumption, body weight gain and feed conversion. The results showed that the restriction of feed and different fiber sources had a significant effect (P <0.05) on feed consumption, body weight gain and feed conversion. The results of this study can be concluded that the restriction of feed by 20 percent for 8 days with a source of crude fiber originated from coconut pulp in feed gave the best response compared with crude fiber originated from coffee peel and rice bran on the performance of the Lohman strain of broiler. Keywords: Broiler, feed restriction, crude fibe

Infection risk of Monilinia fructicola on stone fruit during cold storage and immersion in the dump tank

Monilinia spp. is the main pathogen responsible for postharvest losses of stone fruit. Several studies have examined the conditions for Monilinia spp. infection in the field, but very limited information is available about postharvest. Storing fruit for 1 day in the cold room or dumping fruit in a water tank are the most common handling operations during the postharvest of fruit. Then, the aim of this study was to investigate the risk of Monilinia fructicola infection for two peach and one nectarine cultivars during cold storage and water dump operations. A new methodology was performed using a dry inoculum of M. fructicola. A set of fruit was used as control to demonstrated that at 20 °C 60% relative humidity (RH) was not able to infect fruit, however, the disease was developed when was already infected. In addition, M. fructicola was able to infect and develop disease in fruit at 20 °C 100 RH. The storage of fruit with the presence of M. fructicola conidia on their surface for up to 30 days at 0 °C 100% RH or 4 °C 100% RH did not suppose an important risk of infection since only 3.3 and 3.8%, respectively of fruit were already infected. Overall, all treatments tested with the water dump operation gave optimal conditions to M. fructicola to infect fruit when it was superficially dry inoculated or it was immersed with water contaminated with conidia, increasing the need for water disinfection. In addition, when fruit was immersed in water free from M. fructicola conidia, the postharvest operation gave optimal conditions to develop infections already produced.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Efficacy of environmental friendly disinfectants against the major postharvest pathogens of stone fruits on plastic and wood surfaces

Disinfection of surface facilities during postharvest handling operation is an important practice to avoid secondary fruit infections at stone fruit packinghouses. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effect of six environmental friendly disinfectants against Monilinia fructicola, Penicillium expansum, Rhizopus spp., and Alternaria spp. on plastic and wood surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, sodium hypochlorite, Mico-E-pro®, Proallium FRD-N®, and DMC Clean-CNS® were used as the disinfectants. Untreated and surfaces treated with water were used as controls. Plastic and wood surfaces were sampled with Rodac plates at 2 and 24 h after treatments and the number of colonies were counted. In general, all disinfectants reduce the number of viable conidia from all studied surfaces. Hydrogen peroxide used in a concentration of 150 mg L−1 was the less effective disinfectant in all studied pathogens. The commercial product Mico-E-pro® composed of oregano, onion, and orange extract at a dose of 10 mg L−1 was the most effective disinfectant. Rhizopus spp. was the pathogen more resistant to the disinfectants followed by P. expansum, M. fructicola, and Alternaria spp. Water decreased the number of conidia adhered to the surface. In addition, the untreated control showed substantial conidia reduction after 24 h of artificial inoculation.info:eu-repo/semantics/acceptedVersio

Emergence of Zipf's Law in the Evolution of Communication

    Get PDF
Zipf's law seems to be ubiquitous in human languages and appears to be a universal property of complex communicating systems. Following the early proposal made by Zipf concerning the presence of a tension between the efforts of speaker and hearer in a communication system, we introduce evolution by means of a variational approach to the problem based on Kullback's Minimum Discrimination of Information Principle. Therefore, using a formalism fully embedded in the framework of information theory, we demonstrate that Zipf's law is the only expected outcome of an evolving, communicative system under a rigorous definition of the communicative tension described by Zipf.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Robustness of the European power grids under intentional attack

The power grid defines one of the most important technological networks of our times and sustains our complex society. It has evolved for more than a century into an extremely huge and seemingly robust and well understood system. But it becomes extremely fragile as well, when unexpected, usually minimal, failures turn into unknown dynamical behaviours leading, for example, to sudden and massive blackouts. Here we explore the fragility of the European power grid under the effect of selective node removal. A mean field analysis of fragility against attacks is presented together with the observed patterns. Deviations from the theoretical conditions for network percolation (and fragmentation) under attacks are analysed and correlated with non topological reliability measures.Comment: 7 pages, 4 figure

Exploring the randomness of Directed Acyclic Networks

The feed-forward relationship naturally observed in time-dependent processes and in a diverse number of real systems -such as some food-webs and electronic and neural wiring- can be described in terms of so-called directed acyclic graphs (DAGs). An important ingredient of the analysis of such networks is a proper comparison of their observed architecture against an ensemble of randomized graphs, thereby quantifying the {\em randomness} of the real systems with respect to suitable null models. This approximation is particularly relevant when the finite size and/or large connectivity of real systems make inadequate a comparison with the predictions obtained from the so-called {\em configuration model}. In this paper we analyze four methods of DAG randomization as defined by the desired combination of topological invariants (directed and undirected degree sequence and component distributions) aimed to be preserved. A highly ordered DAG, called \textit{snake}-graph and a Erd\:os-R\'enyi DAG were used to validate the performance of the algorithms. Finally, three real case studies, namely, the \textit{C. elegans} cell lineage network, a PhD student-advisor network and the Milgram's citation network were analyzed using each randomization method. Results show how the interpretation of degree-degree relations in DAGs respect to their randomized ensembles depend on the topological invariants imposed. In general, real DAGs provide disordered values, lower than the expected by chance when the directedness of the links is not preserved in the randomization process. Conversely, if the direction of the links is conserved throughout the randomization process, disorder indicators are close to the obtained from the null-model ensemble, although some deviations are observed.Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures and 5 table

Discovery of a massive variable star with Z=Zo/36 in the galaxy DDO 68

The Local Volume dwarf galaxy DDO 68, from the spectroscopy of its two brightest HII regions (Knots 1 and 2) was designated as the second most metal-poor star-forming galaxy [12+log(O/H)=7.14]. In the repeated spectral observations in 2008 January with the 6-m telescope (BTA) of the HII region Knot 3 [having 12+log(O/H)=7.10+-0.06], we find a strong evidence of a transient event related to a massive star evolution. From the follow-up observation with the higher spectral resolution in 2008 February, we confirm this phenomenon, and give parameters of its emission-line spectrum comprising of Balmer HI and HeI lines. The luminosities of the strongest transient lines (Ha, Hb) are of a few 10^36 erg s^-1. We also detected an additional continuum component in the new spectrum of Knot 3, which displays the spectral energy distribution raising to ultraviolet. The estimate of the flux of this continuum leads us to its absolute V-band magnitude of ~-7.1. Based on the spectral properties of this transient component, we suggest that it is related to an evolved massive star of luminous blue variable type with Z=Zo/36. We briefly discuss observational constraints on parameters of this unique (in the aspect of the record low metallicity of the progenitor massive star) event and propose several lines of its study.Comment: 6 pages, 5 Postscript figures, to appear in MNRAS Letters in June 2008 issu
