    Verification of a localization criterion for several disordered media

    We analytically compute a localization criterion in double scattering approximation for a set of dielectric spheres or perfectly conducting disks uniformly distributed in a spatial volume which can be either spherical or layered.     Two-Scale Kirchhoff Theory: Comparison of Experimental Observations With Theoretical Prediction

    We introduce a non-perturbative two scale Kirchhoff theory, in the context of light scattering by a rough surface. This is a two scale theory which considers the roughness both in the wavelength scale (small scale) and in the scales much larger than the wavelength of the incident light (large scale). The theory can precisely explain the small peaks which appear at certain scattering angles. These peaks can not be explained by one scale theories. The theory was assessed by calculating the light scattering profiles using the Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) images, as well as surface profilometer scans of a rough surface, and comparing the results with experiments.     A new application of reduced Rayleigh equations to electromagnetic wave scattering by two-dimensional randomly rough surfaces

    The small perturbations method has been extensively used for waves scattering by rough surfaces. The standard method developped by Rice is difficult to apply when we consider second and third order of scattered fields as a function of the surface height. Calculations can be greatly simplified with the use of reduced Rayleigh equations, because one of the unknown fields can be eliminated. We derive a new set of four reduced equations for the scattering amplitudes, which are applied to the cases of a rough conducting surface, and to a slab where one of the boundary is a rough surface.     Influence of electrolyte co-additives on the performance of dye-sensitized solar cells

    The presence of specific chemical additives in the redox electrolyte results in an efficient increase of the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs). The most effective additives are 4-tert-butylpyridine (TBP), N-methylbenzimidazole (NMBI) and guanidinium thiocyanate (GuNCS) that are adsorbed onto the photoelectrode/electrolyte interface, thus shifting the semiconductor's conduction band edge and preventing recombination with triiodides. In a comparative work, we investigated in detail the action of TBP and NMBI additives in ionic liquid-based redox electrolytes with varying iodine concentrations, in order to extract the optimum additive/I2 ratio for each system. Different optimum additive/I2 ratios were determined for TBP and NMBI, despite the fact that both generally work in a similar way. Further addition of GuNCS in the optimized electrolytic media causes significant synergistic effects, the action of GuNCS being strongly influenced by the nature of the corresponding co-additive. Under the best operation conditions, power conversion efficiencies as high as 8% were obtained

    Varicella susceptibility and transmission dynamics in Slovenia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>A cross-sectional, age-stratified study was conducted to determine varicella-zoster seroprevalence and force of infection in Slovenia.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>3689 serum samples were tested for VZV IgG antibodies with an enzyme immunoassay. Semiparametric and parametric modelling were used to estimate the force of infection.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Overall, 85.6% of serum samples were seropositive. Age-specific prevalence rose rapidly in preschool children and over 90% of 8 years old tested positive for VZV. However, 2.8% of serum samples among women of childbearing age were seronegative. Semiparametric modelling yielded force of infection estimates of 0.182 (95% CI 0.158-0.206), 0.367 (95% CI 0.285-0.448) and 0.008 (95% CI 0.0-0.032) for age groups 0.5- < 6, 6-11 and ≥12 years, respectively, and 0.175 (95% CI 0.147-0.202), 0.391 (95% CI 0.303-0.480) and 0.025 (95% CI 0.003-0.046) for age groups 0.5- < 5, 5-9 and ≥10 years, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Regardless of the age grouping used, the highest transmission occurred in children in their first years of school.</p

    Presence of activating KRAS mutations correlates significantly with expression of tumour suppressor genes DCN and TPM1 in colorectal cancer

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Despite identification of the major genes and pathways involved in the development of colorectal cancer (CRC), it has become obvious that several steps in these pathways might be bypassed by other as yet unknown genetic events that lead towards CRC. Therefore we wanted to improve our understanding of the genetic mechanisms of CRC development.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>We used microarrays to identify novel genes involved in the development of CRC. Real time PCR was used for mRNA expression as well as to search for chromosomal abnormalities within candidate genes. The correlation between the expression obtained by real time PCR and the presence of the <it>KRAS </it>mutation was investigated.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>We detected significant previously undescribed underexpression in CRC for genes <it>SLC26A3</it>, <it>TPM1 </it>and <it>DCN</it>, with a suggested tumour suppressor role. We also describe the correlation between <it>TPM1 </it>and <it>DCN </it>expression and the presence of <it>KRAS </it>mutations in CRC. When searching for chromosomal abnormalities, we found deletion of the <it>TPM1 </it>gene in one case of CRC, but no deletions of <it>DCN </it>and <it>SLC26A3 </it>were found.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our study provides further evidence of decreased mRNA expression of three important tumour suppressor genes in cases of CRC, thus implicating them in the development of this type of cancer. Moreover, we found underexpression of the <it>TPM1 </it>gene in a case of CRCs without <it>KRAS </it>mutations, showing that <it>TPM1 </it>might serve as an alternative path of development of CRC. This downregulation could in some cases be mediated by deletion of the <it>TPM1 </it>gene. On the other hand, the correlation of <it>DCN </it>underexpression with the presence of <it>KRAS </it>mutations suggests that <it>DCN </it>expression is affected by the presence of activating <it>KRAS </it>mutations, lowering the amount of the important tumour suppressor protein decorin.</p

    A European multicentre evaluation of detection and typing methods for human enteroviruses and parechoviruses using RNA transcripts

    Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) detection has become the gold standard for diagnosis and typing of enterovirus (EV) and human parechovirus (HPeV) infections. Its effectiveness depends critically on using the appropriate sample types and high assay sensitivity as viral loads in cerebrospinal fluid samples from meningitis and sepsis clinical presentation can be extremely low. This study evaluated the sensitivity and specificity of currently used commercial and in-house diagnostic and typing assays. Accurately quantified RNA transcript controls were distributed to 27 diagnostic and 12 reference laboratories in 17 European countries for blinded testing. Transcripts represented the four human EV species (EV-A71, echovirus 30, coxsackie A virus 21, and EV-D68), HPeV3, and specificity controls. Reported results from 48 in-house and 15 commercial assays showed 98% detection frequencies of high copy (1000 RNA copies/5 mu L) transcripts. In-house assays showed significantly greater detection frequencies of the low copy (10 copies/5 mu L) EV and HPeV transcripts (81% and 86%, respectively) compared with commercial assays (56%, 50%; P = 7 x 10(-5)). EV-specific PCRs showed low cross-reactivity with human rhinovirus C (3 of 42 tests) and infrequent positivity in the negative control (2 of 63 tests). Most or all high copy EV and HPeV controls were successfully typed (88%, 100%) by reference laboratories, but showed reduced effectiveness for low copy controls (41%, 67%). Stabilized RNA transcripts provide an effective, logistically simple and inexpensive reagent for evaluation of diagnostic assay performance. The study provides reassurance of the performance of the many in-house assay formats used across Europe. However, it identified often substantially reduced sensitivities of commercial assays often used as point-of-care tests.Peer reviewe
