Infinitesimal and local convexity of a hypersurface in a semi-Riemannian manifold
Given a Riemannian manifold M and a hypersurface H in M, it is well known
that infinitesimal convexity on a neighborhood of a point in H implies local
convexity. We show in this note that the same result holds in a semi-Riemannian
manifold. We make some remarks for the case when only timelike, null or
spacelike geodesics are involved. The notion of geometric convexity is also
reviewed and some applications to geodesic connectedness of an open subset of a
Lorentzian manifold are given.Comment: 14 pages, AMSLaTex, 2 figures. v2: typos fixed, added one reference

Z boson pair production at LHC in a stabilized Randall-Sundrum scenario
We study the Z boson pair production at LHC in the Randall-Sundrum scenario
with the Goldberger-Wise stabilization mechanism. It is shown that
comprehensive account of the Kaluza-Klein graviton and radion effects is
crucial to probe the model: The KK graviton effects enhance the cross section
of on the whole so that the resonance peak of the radion becomes
easy to detect, whereas the RS effects on the process are
rather insignificant. The and invariant-mass distributions are presented
to study the dependence of the RS model parameters. The production of
longitudinally polarized Z bosons, to which the SM contributions are
suppressed, is mainly due to KK gravitons and the radion, providing one of the
most robust methods to signal the RS effects. The sensitivity bounds
on with are also obtained such that
the effective weak scale of order 5 TeV can be experimentally
probed.Comment: 28 pages, LaTex file, 18 eps figure
Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to A_TT for prompt photon production
We present a next-to-leading order QCD calculation of the cross section for
isolated large-p_T prompt photon production in collisions of transversely
polarized protons. We devise a simple method of dealing with the phase space
integrals in dimensional regularization in the presence of the cos(2 phi)
azimuthal-angular dependence occurring for transverse polarization. Our results
allow to calculate the double-spin asymmetry A_TT for this process at
next-to-leading order accuracy, which may be used at BNL-RHIC to measure the
transversity parton distributions of the proton.Comment: 19 pages, LaTeX, 2 figures as eps file
Transient massive hyperlipidaemia in a type 2 diabetic subject
A 50-year-old man, in apparently good health, was referred
to the Lipid Center of San Luigi Gonzaga Hospital,
Orbassano (Turin, Italy), by his primary care physician
(PCP) because clinical tests at the time of blood donation
showed milky plasma with serious hypertriglyceridaemia
(>5000 mg/dl) and hyperglycaemia (381 mg/dl), diagnostic
for diabetes. It was not possible to perform further blood
chemical analyses because hypertriglyceridaemia would
have provided abnormal results. The patient entered the hospital to prevent acute pancreatitis, which is often associated
with severe hypertriglyceridaemi
Towards a global analysis of polarized parton distributions
We present a technique for implementing in a fast way, and without any
approximations, higher-order calculations of partonic cross sections into
global analyses of parton distribution functions. The approach, which is set up
in Mellin-moment space, is particularly suited for analyses of future data from
polarized proton-proton collisions, but not limited to this case. The
usefulness and practicability of this method is demonstrated for the
semi-inclusive production of hadrons in deep-inelastic scattering and the
transverse momentum distribution of ``prompt'' photons in pp collisions, and a
case study for a future global analysis of polarized parton densities is
presented.Comment: 20 pages, LaTeX, 6 eps figures, final version to appear in PRD (minor

Shape Space Methods for Quantum Cosmological Triangleland
With toy modelling of conceptual aspects of quantum cosmology and the problem
of time in quantum gravity in mind, I study the classical and quantum dynamics
of the pure-shape (i.e. scale-free) triangle formed by 3 particles in 2-d. I do
so by importing techniques to the triangle model from the corresponding 4
particles in 1-d model, using the fact that both have 2-spheres for shape
spaces, though the latter has a trivial realization whilst the former has a
more involved Hopf (or Dragt) type realization. I furthermore interpret the
ensuing Dragt-type coordinates as shape quantities: a measure of
anisoscelesness, the ellipticity of the base and apex's moments of inertia, and
a quantity proportional to the area of the triangle. I promote these quantities
at the quantum level to operators whose expectation and spread are then useful
in understanding the quantum states of the system. Additionally, I tessellate
the 2-sphere by its physical interpretation as the shape space of triangles,
and then use this as a back-cloth from which to read off the interpretation of
dynamical trajectories, potentials and wavefunctions. I include applications to
timeless approaches to the problem of time and to the role of uniform states in
quantum cosmological modelling.Comment: A shorter version, as per the first stage in the refereeing process,

Schwinger boson theory of anisotropic ferromagnetic ultrathin films
Ferromagnetic thin films with magnetic single-ion anisotropies are studied
within the framework of Schwinger bosonization of a quantum Heisenberg model.
Two alternative bosonizations are discussed. We show that qualitatively correct
results are obtained even at the mean-field level of the theory, similar to
Schwinger boson results for other magnetic systems. In particular, the
Mermin-Wagner theorem is satisfied: a spontaneous magnetization at finite
temperatures is not found if the ground state of the anisotropic system
exhibits a continuous degeneracy. We calculate the magnetization and effective
anisotropies as functions of exchange interaction, magnetic anisotropies,
external magnetic field, and temperature for arbitrary values of the spin
quantum number. Magnetic reorientation transitions and effective anisotropies
are discussed. The results obtained by Schwinger boson mean-field theory are
compared with the many-body Green's function technique.Comment: 14 pages, including 7 EPS figures, minor changes, final version as

Recoil and Threshold Corrections in Short-distance Cross Sections
We identify and resum corrections associated with the kinematic recoil of the
hard scattering against soft-gluon emission in single-particle inclusive cross
sections. The method avoids double counting and conserves the flow of partonic
energy. It reproduces threshold resummation for high-p_T single-particle cross
sections, when recoil is neglected, and Q_T-resummation at low Q_T, when
higher-order threshold logarithms are suppressed. We exhibit explicit resummed
cross sections, accurate to next-to-leading logarithm, for electroweak
annihilation and prompt photon inclusive cross sections.Comment: minor modifications of the text, some references added. 51 pages,

Next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the polarized hadroproduction of heavy flavors
We present the complete next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the polarized hadroproduction of heavy flavors which soon will be studied experimentally in polarized pp collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) in order to constrain the polarized gluon density Îg. It is demonstrated that the dependence on unphysical renormalization and factorization scales is strongly reduced beyond the leading order. The sensitivity of the charm quark spin asymmetry to Îg is analyzed in some detail, including the limited detector acceptance for leptons from charm quark decays at the BNL RHIC.Ingo Bojak and Marco Stratman
