    The two particle inclusive cross section for the reaction p+pˉ→γ+c+Xp +\bar{p}\rightarrow \gamma + c + X is studied in perturbative quantum chromodynamics at order O(αs2)O(\alpha ^2_s), for large values of the transverse momentum of the prompt photon and charm quark. Two different techniques are used in performing the phase-space integrals; the first is purely analytical, and the second is a combination of analytic and Monte Carlo integration methods. The second, more versatile technique facilitates imposition of photon isolation restrictions and other selections of relevance in experiments. Differential distributions are provided for various observables, and a comparison is made with preliminary data from the CDF collaboration.Comment: 6 pages.     Timelike Compton scattering: exclusive photoproduction of lepton pairs

    We investigate the exclusive photoproduction of a heavy timelike photon which decays into a lepton pair, gamma p -> l+ l- p. This can be seen as the analog of deeply virtual Compton scattering, and we argue that the two processes are complementary for studying generalized parton distributions in the nucleon. In an unpolarized experiment the angular distribution of the leptons readily provides access to the real part of the Compton amplitude. We estimate the possible size of this effect in kinematics where the Compton process should be dominated by quark exchange.Comment: 31 pages, 17 figure

    Spin Dependence of Massive Lepton Pair Production in Proton-Proton Collisions

    We calculate the transverse momentum distribution for the production of massive lepton-pairs in longitudinally polarized proton-proton reactions at collider energies within the context of perturbative quantum chromodynamics. For values of the transverse momentum Q_T greater than roughly half the pair mass Q, Q_T > Q/2, we show that the differential cross section is dominated by subprocesses initiated by incident gluons, provided that the polarized gluon density is not too small. Massive lepton-pair differential cross sections should be a good source of independent constraints on the polarized gluon density, free from the experimental and theoretical complications of photon isolation that beset studies of prompt photon production. We provide predictions for the spin-averaged and spin-dependent differential cross sections as a function of Q_T at energies relevant for the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) at Brookhaven, and we compare these with predictions for real prompt photon production.Comment: 34 pages, RevTeX including 17 figures in .ps file

    The Angular Size and Proper Motion of the Afterglow of GRB 030329

    The bright, nearby (z=0.1685) gamma-ray burst of 29 March 2003 has presented us with the first opportunity to directly image the expansion of a GRB. This burst reached flux density levels at centimeter wavelengths more than 50 times brighter than any previously studied event. Here we present the results of a VLBI campaign using the VLBA, VLA, Green Bank, Effelsberg, Arecibo, and Westerbork telescopes that resolves the radio afterglow of GRB 030329 and constrains its rate of expansion. The size of the afterglow is found to be \~0.07 mas (0.2 pc) 25 days after the burst, and 0.17 mas (0.5 pc) 83 days after the burst, indicating an average velocity of 3-5 c. This expansion is consistent with expectations of the standard fireball model. We measure the projected proper motion of GRB 030329 in the sky to <0.3 mas in the 80 days following the burst. In observations taken 52 days after the burst we detect an additional compact component at a distance from the main component of 0.28 +/- 0.05 mas (0.80 pc).     Spatio-Temporal Scaling of Solar Surface Flows

    The Sun provides an excellent natural laboratory for nonlinear phenomena. We use motions of magnetic bright points on the solar surface, at the smallest scales yet observed, to study the small scale dynamics of the photospheric plasma. The paths of the bright points are analyzed within a continuous time random walk framework. Their spatial and temporal scaling suggest that the observed motions are the walks of imperfectly correlated tracers on a turbulent fluid flow in the lanes between granular convection cells.Comment: Now Accepted by Physical Review Letter
