Summary This master's project is about an approach to soil through artistic work. It is an artistic research project where I through different theories and methods have tried to find a voice that could accommodate both the earth and my own expression. The survey is part of a practice-based master's degree in art, and it contains in addition a visual result in the form of an exhibition with soil in the lead role, as well as a presentation. The background for the project was a curiosity about a natural, short-distanced and for me new material. The main goal of the thesis was to investigate what became known in the meetings, first through a traditional scientific approach, followed by an increased focus on sensing and presence and finally with new-materialism as theory and method. The methods were very different and through the process, I experienced that it gave me a lot of room for reflection on my own role in relation to the soil. By looking at soil through neo-materialism, I experienced a change in my already close relationship with nature: an increasing ethical reflection and a better basis for cooperation. There is a desire behind this project of an increased awareness of the value of soil, and this task can be a tool for further work for others

The article discusses human beingsâ concept of smell in Europe and Norway during the time       period 1770 to 1820. It particularly focuses on the perception of fragrance and stench. The basis for the discussion is two small and decorative artifacts from Norsk Folkemuseumâs collections: a scent container and a snuff box, both in silver. These types of items were often used to exchange gifts between a man and a woman at engagements or weddings. Earlier research on these artifacts has focused on aspects like shape, style, material properties or their significance as gifts. This article takes on a more in-depth analysis to reveal in what types of cultural settings scent containers and snuff boxes were used. In order to understand why scent containers and snuff boxes were used, it is necessary to know the types of scents people of that era were surrounded by. Likewise, knowledge of the actual scent of the content in the scent containers and snuff boxes is necessary. The article discusses whether scent containers and snuff boxes were used in different social classes, and whether both men and women used them. The article concludes that scent containers and snuff boxes were used in situations that required protection from stench, both in the private and the public sphere

Abstract: Hedmark University, Department of Health and Sports Sciences, Department of Nursing, has, on behalf of Stange Municipality, prepared the present report on the organization of palliative care in the municipality. The report addresses what palliative care is, the advantages and disadvantages of palliative beds in the ordinary nursing home ward and its own palliative care unit and finances related to the various alternatives. Palliative care is active treatment, nursing and care for patients with incurable disease. Relief of the patient's physical pain and other troublesome symptoms, regardless of diagnosis / illness, is the key. The goal isthe best possible quality of life forthe patient and the relatives. This meansthat the patient and relatives are met and understood in relation to theirsituation with incurable disease in the family. In order to succeed with palliative care in the municipality, the competence of the staff and interdisciplinary collaboration is required ‐ and collaboration with the specialist health service at Sykehuset Innlandet HF. There is experience from other municipalities in Norway with both palliative units in nursing homes and palliative beds in existing nursing home wards. Some have gone even “further” and established an intermediate (1 ½‐line) ward in a nursing home, and some have established a hospice unit. These experiences, provided that the population in the municipality is greater than 10 ‐ 15 000 inhabitants, indicate that the palliative care unit has more advantages than palliative care beds in the existing nursing home ward. The treatment offered in palliative care units is expensive in relation to the operation of ordinary nursing home wards, but cheap in relation to treatment in hospitals (Garåsen et al., 2003). In line with the proposalsfrom the reasent Minister of Health Bjarne Håkon Hansen recently, it isreasonable to assume that the municipality will thus have an expanded responsibility in relation to the patient groups with a need for palliation in the future. The challenge is to decide in which way Stange municipality will solve this: Palliaitv unit or palliative beds in nursing homes? What skills are needed to handle the challenges? What financial consequences does the realization and operation of the measure chosen have?publishedVersio

Parental perspectives on green schoolyards:advantages outweigh disadvantages, but willingness to help is limited

    Get PDF
Parental involvement is critical to the successful implementation of green schoolyards. This paper reports results from two surveys that asked a total of 402 parents of children in schools with green and paved schoolyards about their appreciation of the schoolyard, children’s behavior in the schoolyard, (dis)advantages of a green schoolyard, and willingness to become involved. Parents from schools with a green, compared to a paved, schoolyard showed higher appreciation of the schoolyard and more often reported that the schoolyard supports varied play and other behaviors. Parents generally saw more advantages than disadvantages of a green schoolyard, and many parents indicated that disadvantages, such as children coming home dirty, are not very important to them. Parents wanted to be involved in designing a green schoolyard and with schoolyard activities. However, they were less willing to help with maintenance, and their time to help is limited

Point-of-care influenza testing impacts clinical decision, patient flow and length of stay in hospitalized adults

Background Influenza is difficult to distinguish clinically from other acute respiratory infections. Rapid laboratory diagnosis can help initiate early effective antiviral treatment and isolation. Implementing a novel point-of-care test (POCT) for influenza in the emergency department (ED) could improve treatment and isolation strategies and reduce the length of stay (LOS). Methods In a prospective, controlled observational cohort study, we enrolled patients admitted due to acute respiratory illness to 2 public hospitals in Bergen, Norway, one using a rapid POCT for influenza (n = 400), the other (n = 167) using conventional rapid laboratory-based assay. Results Prevalence of influenza was similar in the 2 hospitals (154/400, 38% vs 38%, 63/167; P = .863). Most patients in both hospitals received antiviral (83% vs 81%; P = .703) and antibiotic treatment (72% vs 62%; P = .149). Isolation was more often initiated in ED in the hospital using POCT (91% vs 80%; P = .025). Diagnosis by POCT was associated with shorter hospital stay; old age, diabetes, cancer, and use of antibiotics, particularly broad-spectrum antibiotics, were associated with prolonged stay. Conclusions POCT implementation in ED resulted in improved targeted isolation and shorter LOS. Regardless of POCT use, most influenza patients received antivirals (>80%) and antibiotics (>69%).publishedVersio
