    Procedure for creating digital Baylor coverages in ARC/INFO

    Baylor Grounds were defined by a survey of the natural oyster beds in Virginia conducted by Lt. J.B. Baylor, USN, and completed in 1894. The original purpose of the survey was to set aside naturally productive oyster beds for protection from private leasing, which was a controversial concept at the time. Hence the commonly used term \u27Baylor Grounds\u27 is synonymous with Virginia\u27s public oystering grounds in the present day. Other surveys, conducted later, have added to the original Baylor acreage, resulting in an estimated 243, 000 acres of public oyster grounds in Virginia.     Entre o estigma e o reconhecimento : práticas culturais de Aimarás na cidade de Tacna-Peru

    Dissertação (mestrado)—Universidade de Brasília, Instituto de Ciências Sociais, Departamento de Sociologia, 2017.Este trabalho consiste na analise das transformações socioculturais decorrentes da migração de camponeses aimarás do sul de Puno para a cidade de Tacna nas décadas de 1980 e 1990, cidades situadas no sul do Peru. Trata-se de pensar como se dão os mecanismos de integração laboral nas “feiras de comércio ambulatório” e nos chamados “mercadillos”, assim como os mecanismos de inserção urbana na fundação dos bairros de Cidade Nova e nas associações de residentes aimarás em Tacna. Mediante métodos qualitativos, como entrevistas semiestruturadas e pesquisa de campo realizada durante novembro de 2016 e janeiro de 2017, realizamos uma aproximação à vida cotidiana dos aimarás em feiras comerciais – Feira do Altiplano, Centro Comercial Polvos Rosados, Feira Boliviana –, em bairros no Distrito de Cidade Nova – “AAHH Marginal Cidade Nova”, “7 de junho” e “28 de agosto” –, e em associações sociais tais como a Associação de Residentes de Pilcuyo e a de Pomata. Os resultados da pesquisa indicam que a origem rural e camponesa dos aimarás em Tacna orientam as características de sua inserção urbana. Nesse sentido, no campo das relações econômicas, constatou-se que a ética do trabalho indígena, da solidariedade e da ajuda mutua que garantem o autoconsumo no mundo rural, se reconfiguraram no meio urbano para convergir com uma racionalidade de tipo capitalista. A fundação de Cidade Nova acentua processos de concentração de migrantes que propiciam o uso de redes de intercambio recíproco para sobreviver na cidade. Do mesmo modo, as associações de residentes constituem lutas por reconhecimento da diferencia cultural aimará, que se contrapõe ao “estigma” construído pelos grupos estabelecidos acerca dos “migrantes”. Nesse sentido, consideramos que as identidades étnicas não desaparecem durante a integração dos aimarás em Tacna, elas são reconfiguradas em novos formatos identitários que se processam dentro do contexto urbano. Finalmente, observamos que a suposta identidade homogênea da nação peruana esta sendo descentrada a partir da interpelação da identidade étnica dos migrantes, que se reclamam aimarás e peruanos simultaneamente.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES).This work consists of an analysis of the sociocultural changes resulted from the Aymaras´ peasant migration from southern Puno to Tacna city in the 1980s and 1990s, cities located in southern Peru. It is a way of thinking about the work´s integration mechanisms in the "outpatient trade fairs" and in the called "mercadillos", as well as in the mechanisms of urban insertion in the foundation of the Cidade Nova´s neighbourhood and in the associations of Aymara residents in Tacna. Through qualitative methods, such as semi-structured interviews and field research conducted during November 2016 and January 2017, we conducted an approach to the daily life of the Aymaras in trade fairs – Altiplano Fair, Polvos Rosados Shopping Centre and the Bolivian Fair –, in neighbourhoods of the Cidade Nova´s district – "AAHH Marginal New Town", "June 7" and "August 28" – and in social associations such as Pilcuyo´s and Pomata´s Residents Association. The research results show that the rural and peasant origin of the Tacna´s aymaras orient the characteristics of their urban insertion. In this sense, in the field of economic relations, it was found that the ethics of the indigenous work, such as solidarity and mutual aid that guarantee self-consumption in the rural world, have been reconfigured in the urban environment to converge with a kind of capitalist rationality. The foundation of Cidade Nova emphasizes processes of migrant’s concentration that favours the use of reciprocal exchange networks. Similarly, resident associations constitute struggles for recognition of the Aymara´s cultural difference, which contrasts with the "stigma" built by the established groups on the "migrants". In this sense, we consider that the ethnic identities do not disappear during the integration of the Aymaras in Tacna, they are reconfigured in new identity formats that are processed within the urban context. Finally, we observe that the supposed homogeneous identity of the Peruvian nation is being decentred by the interpellation of the ethnic identity of the migrants, who claim the Aymara and Peruvian identity simultaneously.Este trabajo consiste en el análisis de las transformaciones socioculturales que se derivan de la migración de campesinos aymarás del sur de Puno para la ciudad de Tacna en las décadas de 1980 y 1990, ciudades situadas en el sur de Perú. Analizamos cómo se dan los mecanismos de integración laboral en las “ferias de comercio ambulante” y los llamados “mercadillos”, así como los mecanismos de inserción urbana en la fundación de los barrios de Ciudad Nueva y en las asociaciones de residentes aymarás en Tacna. Mediante métodos cualitativos, como entrevistas semi-estructuradas e investigación de campo realizada durante noviembre de 2016 y enero de 2017, realizamos una aproximación a la vida cotidiana de los aymarás en ferias comerciales – Feria del Altiplano, Centro Comercial Polvos Rosados, Feria Boliviana –, en barrios del Distrito Ciudad Nueva – “AAHH Marginal Ciudad Nueva”, “7 de junio” e “28 de agosto” –, y en asociaciones sociales como la Asociación de Residentes de Pilcuyo y la de Pomata. Los resultados de la investigación indican que el origen rural y campesino de los aymarás en Tacna orientan las características de su inserción urbana. En ese sentido, en el campo de las relaciones económicas, se constató que la ética del trabajo aymará, de la solidaridad y de la ayuda mutua que garantiza el autoconsumo en el mundo rural, se reconfigura en el medio urbano para convergir con una racionalidad de tipo capitalista. La Fundación de Ciudad Nueva profundiza procesos de concentración de migrantes que promueve el uso de redes de intercambio recíproco para sobrevivir en la ciudad. Del mismo modo, las asociaciones de residentes constituyen luchas por reconocimiento de la diferencia cultural aymará, que se contrapone al “estigma” construido por los grupos establecidos acerca de los “migrantes”.     The noise-lovers: cultures of speech and sound in second-century Rome

    This chapter provides an examination of an ideal of the ‘deliberate speaker’, who aims to reflect time, thought, and study in his speech. In the Roman Empire, words became a vital tool for creating and defending in-groups, and orators and authors in both Latin and Greek alleged, by contrast, that their enemies produced babbling noise rather than articulate speech. In this chapter, the ideal of the deliberate speaker is explored through the works of two very different contemporaries: the African-born Roman orator Fronto and the Syrian Christian apologist Tatian. Despite moving in very different circles, Fronto and Tatian both express their identity and authority through an expertise in words, in strikingly similar ways. The chapter ends with a call for scholars of the Roman Empire to create categories of analysis that move across different cultural and linguistic groups. If we do not, we risk merely replicating the parochialism and insularity of our sources.Accepted manuscrip

    This research analyzes the trajectories of Aymara migrants in Tacna, especially during the creation of the new city district, with the aim of reflecting on the transformation of the sociocultural references of the city. Using qualitative methods such as semi-structured interviews and participant observation, an immersion took place in the new city neighborhoods during November 2016, January and February 2017. The results of the research show us the importance of the networks of reciprocal exchange between migrants Aymare of rural origin to be inserted in the city. In this sense, we conclude that the new City Foundation expresses the concentration and increase of internal cohesion in the group of migrants Aymara in Tacna and represents the transformation of the status of the Aymara migrant to Tacna resident.En la presente investigación se analizan las trayectorias de migrantes aymarás en Tacna, especialmente durante la creación del Distrito de Ciudad Nueva, con el objetivo de reflexionar sobre la transformación de los referentes socioculturales de la ciudad. Mediante el uso de métodos cualitativos como entrevistas semiestructuradas y observación participante, se realizó una inmersión en los barrios de Ciudad Nueva durante noviembre de 2016, enero y febrero de 2017. Los resultados de la investigación nos muestran la importancia de las redes de intercambio recíproco entre migrantes aymarás de origen rural para insertarse en la ciudad. En ese sentido, concluimos que la fundación del Distrito Ciudad Nueva expresa la concentración y aumento de cohesión interna en el grupo de migrantes aymarás en Tacna y representa la transformación de la condición de migrante aymará en residentes tacneños
