Observations of cosmic ray induced phosphenes

Phosphene observations by astronauts on flights near and far from earth atmosphere are discussed. It was concluded that phosphenes could be observed by the naked eye. Further investigation is proposed to determine realistic human tolerance levels for extended missions and to evaluate the need to provide special spacecraft shielding

Normal, Abby Normal, Prefix Normal

A prefix normal word is a binary word with the property that no substring has more 1s than the prefix of the same length. This class of words is important in the context of binary jumbled pattern matching. In this paper we present results about the number $pnw(n)$ of prefix normal words of length $n$, showing that $pnw(n) =\Omega\left(2^{n - c\sqrt{n\ln n}}\right)$ for some $c$ and $pnw(n) = O \left(\frac{2^n (\ln n)^2}{n}\right)$. We introduce efficient algorithms for testing the prefix normal property and a "mechanical algorithm" for computing prefix normal forms. We also include games which can be played with prefix normal words. In these games Alice wishes to stay normal but Bob wants to drive her "abnormal" -- we discuss which parameter settings allow Alice to succeed.Comment: Accepted at FUN '1

‘It’s better than daytime television’: questioning the socio-spatial impacts of massage parlours on residential communities

It has been shown that street sex work is problematic for some communities, but there is less evidence of the effects of brothels. Emerging research also suggests that impact discourses outlined by residential communities and in regulatory policies should be critiqued, because they are often based on minority community voices, and limited tangible evidence is used to masquerade wider moral viewpoints about the place of sex work. Using a study of residents living in close proximity to brothels in Blackpool, this paper argues that impact is socially and spatially fluid. Impact needs to be evaluated in a more nuanced manner, which is considerate of the heterogeneity of (even one type of) sex work, and the community in question. Brothels in Blackpool had a variety of roles in the everyday socio-spatial fabric; thus also questioning the common assumption that sex work only impacts negatively on residential communities

Geometric potential and transport in photonic topological crystals

We report on the experimental realization of an optical analogue of a quantum geometric potential for light wave packets constrained on thin dielectric guiding layers fabricated in silica by the femtosecond laser writing technology. We further demonstrate the optical version of a topological crystal, with the observation of Bloch oscillations and Zener tunneling of purely geometric nature

Agent-Based Modelling of fish collisions with tidal turbines

With growing developments in marine tidal energy, coupled with high densities of marine species in suitable installation locations, there is concern about marine wildlife colliding with underwater devices. Methods are needed to predict such collisions when assessing environmental impacts of underwater turbines. Agent-Based Models (ABMs) in the field of ecology: simulate interactions between organisms; assess how they live (i.e. grow, reproduce, function, adapt) and die in a dynamic physical environment; consider a population from the point of view of the individuals, or agents with population level behaviours emerging from the behaviour of the individuals; have individual within a system that are defined by traits (e.g. size, age or sensitivity to a stressor) and behaviours they can perform (e.g. migration or avoidance). To better predict collisions with underwater devices, HR Wallingford has developed an Agent-Based Model (ABM) to predict the probability of marine animals colliding with an underwater device

One of the acoustic sources producing high impulsive noise and vibration is pile driving. However, the potential impacts of real pile driving on fish species has received little attention, mainly due to the logistical challenges involved. Here, we investigated the impact of pile driving on the oxygen uptake (a secondary stress response) of black seabream Spondyliosoma cantharus and European plaice Pleuronectes platessa using an experimental pile driver setup in a flooded ship-building dock. Each individual fish was tested in ambient and pile driving conditions using a counterbalanced paired design to control for potential order effects. During pile driving, black seabream increased oxygen uptake compared to the ambient control condition suggesting higher stress levels. Plaice did not show differences in oxygen consumption between the pile driving and ambient treatment. These results show the impact of pile driving on secondary stress responses in fish, highlight species-specific differences concerning acoustical impacts, and showcase the possibility of carrying out large-scale semi-field acoustic experiments.Thanks also to E.ON, NERC MREKE and Marine Scotland for financial support

A multidisciplinary approach to optimising the virtual management of haemophilia: a roundtable meeting of UK experts

The necessity of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) approach in haemophilia care is well recognised globally, with international guidelines advocating this. Prior to the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic, virtual MDT haemophilia care was gaining support worldwide. However, the pandemic necessitated the rapid implementation of innovative virtual solutions to ensure continued access to multidisciplinary care. A multidisciplinary panel of healthcare professionals who specialise in haemophilia care in the United Kingdom gathered to discuss the following: the current landscape of haemophilia MDT care and best practices, the benefits, challenges, and opportunities for virtual MDT care, managing bleeds remotely, virtual paediatric care, and the future of virtual MDT care. The consensus was that virtual MDT care is widely used, however formats vary depending on the healthcare setting, available resources, MDT preferences, and local policy. Advisors agreed that virtual MDT care has several benefits, such as improved convenience/choice for their patients and wider patient reach. However, many patient-specific and logistical challenges exist. Hybrid care models may provide an opportunity to overcome these challenges. The decision on how bleeds are managed (virtually versus face-to-face) depends on provider preference, the patient-provider relationship, and the patient’s disease severity, history, and ability to self-manage. As such, this should be assessed on a case-by-case basis. Virtual tracking tools cannot be solely relied upon for MDT decision making as patient accuracy cannot be ascertained. The MDT composition for paediatric care should be tailored to the patients’ and their parents’/caregivers’ needs. Lastly, hybridised care will likely be adopted for future haemophilia management and will facilitate the advancement of MDT car

An Optical Study of BG Geminorum: An Ellipsoidal Binary with an Unseen Primar Star

We describe optical photometric and spectroscopic observations of the bright variable BG Geminorum. Optical photometry shows a pronounced ellipsoidal variation of the K0 I secondary, with amplitudes of ~0.5 mag at VRI and a period of 91.645 days. A deep primary eclipse is visible for wavelengths < 4400A; a shallower secondary eclipse is present at longer wavelengths. Eclipse timings and the radial velocity curve of the K0 secondary star indicate an interacting binary where a lobe-filling secondary, M_2 ~ 0.5 Msun, transfers material into a extended disk around a massive primary, M_1 ~ 4.5 Msun. The primary star is either an early B-type star or a black hole. If it did contain a black hole, BG Gem would be the longest period black hole binary known by a factor of 10, as well as the only eclipsing black hole binary system.Comment: 27 pages, includes 8 figures and 5 tables, accepted to A

Applications of graphics to support a testbed for autonomous space vehicle operations

Researchers describe their experience using graphics tools and utilities while building an application, AUTOPS, that uses a graphical Machintosh (TM)-like interface for the input and display of data, and animation graphics to enhance the presentation of results of autonomous space vehicle operations simulations. AUTOPS is a test bed for evaluating decisions for intelligent control systems for autonomous vehicles. Decisions made by an intelligent control system, e.g., a revised mission plan, might be displayed to the user in textual format or he can witness the effects of those decisions via out of window graphics animations. Although a textual description conveys essentials, a graphics animation conveys the replanning results in a more convincing way. Similarily, iconic and menu-driven screen interfaces provide the user with more meaningful options and displays. Presented here are experiences with the SunView and TAE Plus graphics tools used for interface design, and the Johnson Space Center Interactive Graphics Laboratory animation graphics tools used for generating out out of the window graphics
