Banished from the Present: Musicians in Nazi Germany
This essay analyzes musical life in the Third Reich. More specifically, the focus will be on the Nazis’ regulation of music and the role that musicians themselves played in determining and enforcing cultural coordination. While some evidence extends into the war years (1939-1945), the bulk of the information presented here took place in the pre-war Nazi era (1933-1939). The purpose here is to show that those musicians who worked with and under the Nazis were affected in different ways and had varying levels of agency within the National Socialist system. Some have been branded collaborators, others victims, and this paper will question this binary system of classification. Following a trend of historical revisionism in this field, this paper takes into account that the question of culpability is now less certain than ever

Gas Permeation of Sulfur Thin-Films and Potential as a Barrier Material.
Elemental sulfur was formed into poly(ether sulfone)-supported thin-films (ca. 10 µm) via a melt-casting process. Observed permeabilities of C2H4, CO2, H2, He, and N2 through the sulphur thin-films were <1 barrer. The sulfur thin-films were observed to age over a period of ca. 15 days, related to the reversion of polymerized sulfur to the S8 allotrope. This structural conversion was observed to correlate with an increase in the permeability of all gases

Summary Hydrogeologic Assessment U.S. Department of Energy Pantex Plant, Carson County, Texas
In 1990, the Bureau of Economic Geology (BEG) and the Department of Geological Sciences (DOGS) at The University of Texas at Austin and the Water Resources Center (WRC) at Texas Tech University began a five-year program, funded by the Department of Energy (DOE) through the Governor's Office of the State of Texas, to characterize the geohydrology of Pantex Plant. The purpose of this work, which is summarized in this report, was to provide data and information that would assist in the remediation of contaminated sites at Pantex and support the State of Texas in its review of the Department of Energy's (DOE's) remediation program. The results of this investigation describe the physical setting and heterogeneities that control movement and distribution of contaminants and the processes that affect rates and fate of contaminants. The fate and distribution of contaminants, the selection and application of appropriate remediation approaches, the evaluation of the effectiveness of remediation technologies, and the proper monitoring of the affected environment all depend on knowledge of the controls and rates of active processes at Pantex Plant.Bureau of Economic Geolog
Approximate quantum data storage and teleportation
In this paper we present an optimal protocol by which an unknown state on a
Hilbert space of dimension can be approximately stored in an
-dimensional quantum system or be approximately teleported via an
-dimensional quantum channel. The fidelity of our procedure is determined
for pure states as well as for mixed states and states which are entangled with
auxiliary quantum systems of varying Hilbert space dimension, and it is
compared with theoretical results for the maximally achievable fidelity.Comment: More detailed discussion of teleportation of entangled and mixed

A Fast and Compact Quantum Random Number Generator
We present the realization of a physical quantum random number generator
based on the process of splitting a beam of photons on a beam splitter, a
quantum mechanical source of true randomness. By utilizing either a beam
splitter or a polarizing beam splitter, single photon detectors and high speed
electronics the presented devices are capable of generating a binary random
signal with an autocorrelation time of 11.8 ns and a continuous stream of
random numbers at a rate of 1 Mbit/s. The randomness of the generated signals
and numbers is shown by running a series of tests upon data samples. The
devices described in this paper are built into compact housings and are simple

The effectiveness of quantum operations for eavesdropping on sealed messages
A quantum protocol is described which enables a user to send sealed messages
and that allows for the detection of active eavesdroppers. We examine a class
of eavesdropping strategies, those that make use of quantum operations, and we
determine the information gain versus disturbance caused by these strategies.
We demonstrate this tradeoff with an example and we compare this protocol to
quantum key distribution, quantum direct communication, and quantum seal

Experimental Quantum Cloning with Prior Partial Information
When prior partial information about a state to be cloned is available, it
can be cloned with a fidelity higher than that of universal quantum cloning. We
experimentally verify this intriguing relationship between the cloning fidelity
and the prior information by reporting the first experimental optimal quantum
state-dependent cloning, using nuclear magnetic resonance techniques. Our
experiments may further have important implications into many quantum
