Interfirm Job Mobility of Two Cohorts of Young German Men 1979 - 1990: An analysis of the (West-)German Employment Statistic Register Sample concerning multivariate failure times and unobserved heterogeneity
The OECD (1993) has documented that the majority of workers in industrialised countries can look forward to finding a stable employment relationship. However new entrants into the labor force experience high turnover. Promoting institutions which support longer tenures and worker participation (or ''voice`` in the firm) utilize strategies to encourage enterprise and employee efforts in skill formation and training. The results of the OECD (1993) study show that attachments between employee and employer are more likely to endure for Japanese, French and German workers. Furthermore Germany has the highest share of young new recruits who received any formal training from their employer. In Germany, 71.5 % of young new recruits were trained at any job within 7 years after leaving school, whereas in the U.S. only 10.2 % of young new recruits were similarly trained (cf. OECD 1993, 137). It is sometimes assumed that employment protection policies have been exogenously imposed and thus probably impair efficiency. However, research on the micro-economics of labor markets has shown that employers may be interested in long-term employment relationships (cf. Levine 1991). Here, the job training model focusing on the importance of human capital investment, specifically the job shopping and matching model stressing the process of information gathering through employment experience should be mentioned. In such models employment protection legislation has not only desirable distributional effects but also help to ensure efficient outcomes. Therefore, it is important to assess the relevance of micro- economic theories empirically. This paper provides an empirical analysis of job durations in Western Germany using information from two cohorts of new entrants to the labor force documented in the (West-)German employment statistic register sample (cf. Bender and Hilzendegen 1996). The appropriate empirical technique to study job length is event history or survival analysis. In labor market research, survival analysis has primarily focused on explaining the length of unemployment spells. Application of this technique to employment is less common 1 , because huge longitudinal data sets are needed. Apart from testing hypotheses about the effect of personal characteristics and labor demand variables (e.g. firm size and industry affiliation), we will assess the influence of heterogeneity of the members of the two cohorts on their duration profile. The applied model and estimation method allow for unobserved heterogeneity and correlation between the clustered failure times of one employee as well as for right-censored spells. Our analysis is not restricted to the beginning of the working life of the employees. The individual retirement decision is affected by employment protection and early retirement regulations which differ widely between the firms. The respective data are missing in the employment statistic register, so that the retirement decision cannot be modelled explicitly
Evaluation of radiometric and geometric characteristics of LANDSAT-D imaging system
With vegetation masked and noise sources eliminated or minimized, different carbonate facies could be discriminated in a south Florida scene. Laboratory spectra of grab samples indicate that a 20% change in depth of the carbonate absorption band was detected despite the effects of atmospheric absorption. Both bright and dark hydrothermally altered volcanic rocks can be discriminated from their unaltered equivalents. A previously unrecognized altered area was identified on the basis of the TM images. The ability to map desert varnish in semi-arid terrains has economic significance as it defines areas that are less susceptible desert erosional process and suitable for construction development
A preliminary evaluation of LANDSAT-4 thematic mapper data for their geometric and radiometric accuracies
Some LANDSAT thematic mapper data collected over the eastern United States were analyzed for their whole scene geometric accuracy, band to band registration and radiometric accuracy. Band ratio images were created for a part of one scene in order to assess the capability of mapping geologic units with contrasting spectral properties. Systematic errors were found in the geometric accuracy of whole scenes, part of which were attributable to the film writing device used to record the images to film. Band to band registration showed that bands 1 through 4 were registered to within one pixel. Likewise, bands 5 and 7 also were registered to within one pixel. However, bands 5 and 7 were misregistered with bands 1 through 4 by 1 to 2 pixels. Band 6 was misregistered by 4 pixels to bands 1 through 4. Radiometric analysis indicated two kinds of banding, a modulo-16 stripping and an alternate light dark group of 16 scanlines. A color ratio composite image consisting of TM band ratios 3/4, 5/2, and 5/7 showed limonitic clay rich soils, limonitic clay poor soils, and nonlimonitic materials as distinctly different colors on the image
Shape coexistence in neutron-deficient Kr isotopes: Constraints on the single-particle spectrum of self-consistent mean-field models from collective excitations
We discuss shape coexistence in the neutron-deficient Kr72-Kr78 isotopes in
the framework of configuration mixing calculations of particle-number and
angular-momentum projected axial mean-field states obtained from
self-consistent calculations with the Skyrme interaction SLy6 and a
density-dependent pairing interaction. While our calculation reproduces
qualitatively and quantitatively many of the global features of these nuclei,
such as coexistence of prolate and oblate shapes, their strong mixing at low
angular momentum, and the deformation of collective bands, the ordering of our
calculated low-lying levels is at variance with experiment. We analyse the role
of the single-particle spectrum of the underlying mean-field for the spectrum

Evaluation of radiometric and geometric characteristics of LANDSAT-D imaging system
Problems, accomplishments, and significant results associated with the evaluation of the LANDSAT-D thematic mapper system are outlined. The higher resolution (over MSS) causes the TM data to approach more closely the quality of high altitude photographs. Thus far, it appears that the data can be used for map inspection and in certain instances for limited map revision. Image maps can be made at a scale of 1:100,000 and perhaps up to 1:62,500. It was also shown that TM data can help locate rocks containing minerals with high hydroxol content, such as clays, gypsum, alunite, and sericite
PT-symmetry breaking in complex nonlinear wave equations and their deformations
We investigate complex versions of the Korteweg-deVries equations and an Ito
type nonlinear system with two coupled nonlinear fields. We systematically
construct rational, trigonometric/hyperbolic, elliptic and soliton solutions
for these models and focus in particular on physically feasible systems, that
is those with real energies. The reality of the energy is usually attributed to
different realisations of an antilinear symmetry, as for instance PT-symmetry.
It is shown that the symmetry can be spontaneously broken in two alternative
ways either by specific choices of the domain or by manipulating the parameters
in the solutions of the model, thus leading to complex energies. Surprisingly
the reality of the energies can be regained in some cases by a further breaking
of the symmetry on the level of the Hamiltonian. In many examples some of the
fixed points in the complex solution for the field undergo a Hopf bifurcation
in the PT-symmetry breaking process. By employing several different variants of
the symmetries we propose many classes of new invariant extensions of these
models and study their properties. The reduction of some of these models yields

The old and heavy bulge of M31 I. Kinematics and stellar populations
We present new optical long-slit data along 6 position angles of the bulge
region of M31. We derive accurate stellar and gas kinematics reaching 5 arcmin
from the center, where the disk light contribution is always less than 30%, and
out to 8 arcmin along the major axis, where the disk makes 55% of the total
light. We show that the velocity dispersions of McElroy (1983) are severely
underestimated (by up to 50 km/s) and previous dynamical models have
underestimated the stellar mass of M31's bulge by a factor 2. Moreover, the
light-weighted velocity dispersion of the galaxy grows to 166 km/s, thus
reducing the discrepancy between the predicted and measured mass of the black
hole at the center of M31. The kinematic position angle varies with distance,
pointing to triaxiality. We detect gas counterrotation near the bulge minor
axis. We measure eight emission-corrected Lick indices. They are approximately
constant on circles. We derive the age, metallicity and alpha-element
overabundance profiles. Except for the region in the inner arcsecs of the
galaxy, the bulge of M31 is uniformly old (>12 Gyr, with many best-fit ages at
the model grid limit of 15 Gyr), slightly alpha-elements overabundant
([alpha/Fe]~0.2) and at solar metallicity, in agreement with studies of the
resolved stellar components. The predicted u-g, g-r and r-i Sloan color
profiles match reasonably well the dust-corrected observations. The stellar
populations have approximately radially constant mass-to-light ratios (M/L_R ~
4-4.5 for a Kroupa IMF), in agreement with stellar dynamical estimates based on
our new velocity dispersions. In the inner arcsecs the luminosity-weighted age
drops to 4-8 Gyr, while the metallicity increases to above 3 times the solar

Distribution, expression and long range mapping of legiolysin gene (lly) specific DNA sequences in Legionellae
The legiolysin gene (lly) cloned from Legionella pneumophila Philadelphia 1 confers the phenotypes of hemolysis and browning of the culture medium. An internal Uy-specific DNA probe was used in Southern hybridizations for the detection of Uy-specific DNA in the genomes of legioneUae and other gram-negative pathogenic bacteria. Under conditi9ns of high stringency, tlie Uy DNA probe specifically reacted with DNA fragments fr9m L. pneumophiüz isolates; by reducing stringency, hybridization was also observed for all other Legionella strains tested. No hybridization occurred with DNAs isolated from bact~ria of other genera. The Uy genewas mapped by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis to the respective genomic Notl fragments of Legionelltz isolates. By using antilegiolysin monospecific polyclonal antibodies in Western blots (immunoblots), Lly proteins could be detected only in L. pneumophila isolates
